A rogue TARDIS that should not exist… A mutilated, comatose Time Lord who cannot be identified… A new Castellan desperate to make his mark… Evils of the past, events of the present, and echoes of the future conspire to destroy the very heart of Gallifrey’s civilisation.
I have already said that I’m a fan of body horror in other threads, so listening to it honestly felt like it was written specifically for me. I know I’m very generous in giving 10/10s, but… 10/10 for this one, it was too good. @sircarolyn was NOT LYING when they said that this episode was made for me in the previous thread about Spirit
My thoughts on this is as many of the Gallifrey stuff. It is fine. It has an interesting conflict and I like Leela and Romana but I still don’t care that much for the rest of the cast and it can be a little slow from time to time.
Yes, there’s a solid dose of body horror in there but it isn’t that aspect that has me hooked in this episode. It’s the scheming. The manipulation. The game playing with other people’s lives. At this stage in the series, it has really ramped up. I knew this was coming, but it’s still so good.
Yes, as noted above (@VoRus1 and @eddyfate), Pandora seamlessly links to Spirit and yet is tonally a world apart.
For the DW nostalgia kick, we get to hear the organ music, pompous and full of self import, as Brax is sworn in. It’s a little thing, but it’s a touchstone with the Gothic richness of The Deadly Assassin and is absolutely in keeping with this story. Burning by staser to disguise identity in the DW story mirrored here with burning by laser. Pandora is NOT The Deadly Assassin but it shares a lot of common DNA with that much vaunted televised story.
Yes, at this point, Gallifrey is in full swing. It knows what it is, what it wants to be and how it can develop.
Darkel, huh? What a nasty scheming piece of work she is!
And Narvin? Is he beginning to gain your respect yet? This is the point in the series where I felt Narvin was really starting to become so much more than the character he initially seemed to be back at the beginning of season one. Dare I say, this is the point where I had to start admit that I kinda like the guy! Don’t get me wrong. He’s still far from the typical and not exactly on the side of Romana and Leela, but he’s also nothing at all like Darkel and her ilk.
Well, this was interesting! I do think this is the strongest episode yet in regards to the political schemes and mind games, which is really good, I feel like Darkel has done a lot to increase that. Love to hate her. The main mystery of the broken man’s identity is done so well! Absolutely heartbreaking!! Wynter is such a kind character and he had such promise! I already got attached to him Proud of myself for figuring it out before the characters though. It’s so horrible and I love it. Tbh though, the squelching was bad but with everybody’s warnings I did expect it to go on longer. I feel like the extended whimpering last episode was worse emotionally. Also Brax!!! Love him. So much interesting stuff on him and especially him and Romana! I hope he doesn’t stay away for too long. Also will forever be going insane about Leela/Andred.
live blog
Yayy it’s gallifrey time for me
Oh that’s weird stuff
If we’re all going to die we might as well do it in peace
I do love how they talk about narvin
Time machines being late is always funny to me
I love K9
You know maybe she shouldn’t be giving out those codes to so many people, it’s starting to be a lot options, especially considering that that tardis is probably from the future
I do love matrix lore
They’re all just like children squabbling
Brax and Romana <3
Love him standing up for her
They are so compelling with how they do power
She already has so much power
Oh girl
She’s got so many issues<3
I love their scheming
Paranoid queen but not wrong
K9
Leela and wynter is an interesting dynamic because they’re both not quite at home in this world
Apolitical doubt that
All this scheming<3
More intriguing stuff
Andred’s motivations are really compelling actually
Brax is really good at knowing people
Oh is Darkel trying to manipulate Leela
That’s mean
Being mean to Leela is by far the worst crime a character can commit in these btw
Love the political stuff
I like wynter
Leela trying to help
Girl aren’t you already abusing your power regularly
Now what does Darkel want I don’t trust her at all
What is it K9 say it nothing is impossible
Mind games on so high levels going on here
Leela!!
Why does he call her savage
This is so good
Will be going insane about this
Dude at least talk to your wife
So interesting
Love this
Oh my God her crying
This is excellent
Louise Jameson is so good
I like Darkel kind of she’s a very interesting character
I think it’s precisely your strong suit
Wtf does she want!!
Wynter is really not up for these mind games poor guy
Why does she want to free Pandora I don’t think this is everything
Those voices are kind of creepy
What are they doing to K9
What
Is she already free
What’s happening now
Some pompous music here
I love Narvin’s stuff on friends
Why doesn’t he talk to anyone
Narvin is so manipulative<3
What’s happening to Wynter
This is so interesting
Wait a second
K9 has a laser
Is it him
And he got the codes in the beginning
Shit
It’s a human greeting
He’s alive again?
Or is it happening now
It’s happening now
Oh shit the poison
Leela’s voice is so caring
K9 sounds so sad
What does she want!!!
Oh but Wynter told Narvin
He can figure it out
Oh I love Leela being made castellan
That’s so cool
I feel like Brax is one of the few people truly appreciating her
Which btw everyone should do
I think I may be starting to like Narvin
I think the contrast with Darkel is doing him good
He’s got his goals but he’s got a sort of honour
Yeah it’s Wynter
Called it
That’s so sad
I liked him
Oh he got tricked
Oh he wanted to stop it
He’s so loyal
So sad
Oh
This is terrible
Shit
Those are definitely noises
Ouch
■■■■
Now I’m sad
Poor guy
Leela and Andred is still so arggghhhh<3
Then it’s good Leela isn’t a time lord and not that ambitious
Because she only wants to belong
I love that his thoughts also get music
Oh this is so sad
Oh God
He’s so loyal in a way, so full of conviction
So brave
Oh
Oh ■■■■
I hate Darkel
Love to hate her though
It’s the only thing they can still do for him
Make it be over as quickly as possible
They all are so ambitious
I do think Brax cares about Romana though
I do love that this has more political stuff
I love how Romana says well done K9
She’s always so kind to him
Leela <3
What the hell
Oh Brax is so interesting
That thought stuff he does is really cool
Brax!!
What are they doing to Brax
I like him
I like him and Romana so much
Such a compelling dynamic
Don’t make me more sad
They are making me more sad
Do you think he wants to be president because being president is so bad for Romana
Chancellor Braxiatel crying
What the hell
Oh wasn’t Narvin meant to forget that?
You can’t just give people jobs and what are you doing, Romana?
It was you who freed her
Hate her
Stop hurting him!!
He’s already leaving just let him do so in peace
It’s so interesting how in spite of it all he’s got such dignity
Like there’s nothing you can do to make him lose that
Another great Gallifrey listen. I did remember the identity of the Broken Man so that part probably had less impact on me than first time around but my goodness do I love the scheming of Inquisitor Darkel. It’s possibly my favourite thing about Gallifrey that they took the character of the Inquisitor from Trial of a Time Lord and turned her into an absolute bitch! She reminds me of Servalan and Lynda Bellingham is clearly having an absolute ball.
Finished this tonight. It is so good. This is what makes Gallifrey such a great series. Darkel’s political maneuvering, Braxiatel’s banishment, I really don’t have words for this. The second half of this just jumps from strength to strength. Bring on next Saturday!
The plot thickens and I get very sad over Wynter. He deserved so much better. I also think that Brax being exiled after taking the Pandora entity is the moment the series takes the training wheels off. Romana and Leela are on their own now and there’s no “experienced mentor” type character anymore and that means that any mistake could be more disastrous now that there’s no one to help clean up the mess.
One thing that I never caught and had stick to me before but did this time around was Leela’s moment with Andred. She so clearly loves this man and he so clearly loves her but she refuses to go back to him after everything he put her through. I think it’s a really powerful scene and that ending line from Leela about not wanting to lecture at the academy really hammers home just how out of her element Leela is.
