I’ll go in open-minded. Best I can do after Coda.
Only just realised this was coming out tomorrow, got it pre-ordered.
Same happened for me lol
Not sure I’ll listen to any of it on Wednesday, but I’m so excited.
Coda was…fine. But I never bothered with anything else from Once & Future.
I’m cautiously optimistic, even with the presence of Daleks.
I’m so excited for this release.
I absolutely loved “Coda”
I’m excited, but prepared to be disappointed. I hope that BF takes this opportunity to do something different with the Doctor now that they are allowed to play in her sandbox.
Yeah, I hope that they take a more Classic Who Season 1 characterisation with the Fugitive Doctor, with the military attitude she’d naturally have because of Division. That’s what was great about Coda, she didn’t feel like the Doctor we’ve known since Season 1, 2 at a push. It’ll be a shame if they don’t do that and just make her another Doctor, which I believe they did with the War Doctor in Big Finish, correct me if I’m wrong as I haven’t listened to his audios.
They did in his original run with Hurt but the ones with Jonathan Carley have been able to do more with him.
That’s a shame that they didn’t with Hurt, as you can take his Doctor to so many places you normally couldn’t do with other Doctors, at least not to the fullest extent. So I really hope that the Fugitive Doctor is like how she was characterised in Coda, and that we eventually get an explanation for her TARDIS looking like a Police Box. A part of me is hopeful that will happen one day because of what Robert Valentine (writer and script editor) said in the Vortex magazine.
"We all agreed that we shouldn’t be trying to solve any mysteries of the Fugitive Doctor - at least not yet.”
I was very hesitant to order this despite loving Jo Martin exactly because of how they handled Hurt (and to the lesser extent the Ninth Doctor despite enjoying the 9DAs a lot), I think it’d be a waste to throw her into very traditional Doctor Who stories and to characterise her in a very typical Doctor way. I want these sets to focus on what makes her so different, and what’ll make future ones worth ordering if we’re so fortunate.
The preview got me excited though, I stopped listening after the first 5 minutes or so to save it for the full release. And I like that we’re going to have an overarching villain pursuing her, I can’t wait to hear what they do with that and hopefully we get a fun, reluctant frenemies type dynamic as things go on. Though I can’t help but wonder if they’ll ever get to throw Gat in the mix, I want to hear more of her too! She’s a very underrated part of Fugitive of the Judoon.
Completely agree.
Yeah, what confuses me about what we’ve heard of the Fugitive Doctor audios so far is that she goes on the run from a Division Mission, when she earned her promised retirement after completing the Division Mission to end the Siege of Atropos, and so where Gat fits into this I’m not sure. Though maybe after Atropos the Division high-ups like Tecteun go back on their promise, make her tie up some loose ends, or maybe the Siege of Atropos is after Fugitive of the Judoon and they recapture her, and force her to continue working for them.
If I got to explain why the Fugitive Doctor uses the title Doctor, to respect Hartnell’s Doctor and his character arc, I’d say that there are multiple titles on Gallifrey that mean Doctor in English, because it has various meanings anyway like healer, physician, scientist, and an expert of a certain subject.
I think that the title the Fugitive Doctor/Pre-Hartnell Doctors used and was presumably chosen by the 7th kid Doctor we see in the Division Meeting in The Timeless Children, means scientist, because that fits nicely with how they are under the guardianship of Tecteun and were involved in the engineering/technological side of the creation of Time Lord society.
And Hartnell’s Doctor chose the title meaning healer or physician, attaching a promise with it to never be cruel or cowardly, to never give up or in, to help and save people.
I think she will have not trusted the Division. & gone on the run after her ‘final mission’.
Never be cruel or cowardly…
Apart from when 1st Doctor was gonna murder a caveman in cold blood
Or when (spoilers for Main Range #49: Master) he apparently killed a kid with a rock? What is it with the First Doctor and braining people with rocks?
Something I’ve also just thought of, as there were multiple Time Lords without the 12 regeneration limit like the Doctor pre-Hartnell, did they have to keep changing their identity every 13 regenerations in order to fit in with Time Lord Society. If so, the identity cycle the Fugitive Doctor was in, perhaps that cycle was using the title scientist.
more like: What is it with expanded universe writers trying to turn “a rock” into the doctor’s murder weapon of choice? Just because of that one scene in An Unearthly Child? It’s like when a character mentions liking a food and suddenly the fandom acts like they only ever eat that one thing.
And I think in the First Doctor’s mind, he was taking the same attitude we take to a wounded animal on the side of the road and wanted to put the Caveman out of his misery, albeit for selfish reasons. I wonder why that’s not been acknowledged, if it ever has.
You and I see that scene very differently. I don’t think there was an ounce of compassion in the First Doctor towards that caveman.
