Who are your top three Doctors?

Slightly breaking your hypothesis by being a 8, 12 and 13 girlie :stuck_out_tongue:

The Eleventh Doctor was my first but over time I feel like I have outgrown him. I enjoyed his stories at the time but I feel like he no longer fits the kind of stories that I look for these days. At the time I still liked him most, I couldn’t get into Twelve for the life of me but in a complete 180 he’s sort of become my favourite now. It just took a bit of growing up to start appreciating him

Eight should be for obvious reasons, you know. We’ve talked about this at length lol. And well, Thirteen is a bit of a soft spot for me really. It was her series airing that finally got me back into watching DW to begin with.

Laughing a little because while I do love 2 and 5, my feelings towards 10/14 are “I’ve Had Enough Of This Guy.jpg”

I’m interested to know what kind of stories you like / don’t like?

And have you heard The Eleventh Doctor Chronicles because I recently discovered it and think it is incredible. Been binging it all month, nearly finished.

My top three are 1, 7, 9; then 8, 2, 6, 12, 13; 4, 3, 11; 5 and 10 are my bottom two.

For the unnumbered ones, I really like Fugitive, she’d be quite high on my list. War is pretty low for me but could get higher when I listen to more audios.

No idea where 15’s going to go yet but I like him a lot!

Personally, I favour the stories more serious in tone. And of course good and light heartedness is par for the course and necessary, but in my memory in 11s era in particular there was too much of it (then there is ofc me not liking Clara so much which did not help). Maybe my memory of his seasons are wrong (Twelve had plenty of goofy moments in his episodes too haha), and there are definitely a few episodes I do actually like but overall… idk. Just not that much my vibe anymore. It may just be misremembering, it’s admittedly been a few years since my last watch of the Smith era.

I haven’t actually! I’ve been a little out of the loop with the expanded content where the 11th doctor is concerned - partially because I’ve just not felt like looking for it, combined with a lack of being on social media platforms… well. Recipe for missing out, I suppose  Maybe I should check it out some time, even if it is just to enjoy story 1.3 which I see is written by Roy Gill! He’s one of my favourite writers currently. A little bit of writers bias might go a long way just yet

I think I’m going to start differentiating my top three in terms of whose characterization I like the most, and whose serials I like the most.

Six, Twelve, and Thirteen have my favorite characterization, but Six, Ten, and Thirteen have my favorite serials (followed by Twelve).

Roy Gill is an excellent writer.

However, I actually wasn’t referring to those stories. It’s a bit confusing because the stories that are amazing start at box 3… it’s a whole new direction for the 11th Doctor on audio because they give him a brand new companion, slotted into his timeline in a very neat way. Valarie Lockwood is so great!

I created this set to gather them all together:

Is it really a Big Finish series if the order in which to listen to it makes any sense… ?

@sircarolyn not really, but when do we ever stick to the actual listening order?

That’s very handy though. Certainly helps when it’s not entirely straight forward hahaha
I’ll be sure to refer back to that if I do decide to give it a shot. Thank you!

Honestly I’d have a hard time to narrow it down to three but if I have to chose then it’s 2, 8 and 12. (I am so sorry 1, you were close to getting a win).
In general, I have a hard time to rank Doctors, it’s always in a state where it can change. If you asked me 9 Months ago, somebody like 10 would be an easy yes for the top 10 Spot, meanwhile 5 would be probably be in the bottom. Now 5 is an easy Top 10 Spot for me, meanwhile 10 has fallen out of my top 10. But that’s the beauty of it all, isn’t it. You sometimes get a story or two that you really like and boom you connect with a Doctor, that you might not enjoy that much before. Same with Hartnell for me really, I always enjoyed him but as time has gone on his Doctor got more and more closer to my top 3

I like all of them, but if forced to choose three it would be 7, 8, 11. Probably followed by 2, 9 and 12.

Not just me, then. I don’t dislike 12, but there are aspects to his version of the character I don’t entirely care for. He’d be down near the bottom of my list, though he does still get a thumbs up from me.

I’m guessing we have a younger demographic on this site, especially when I see how far down the list you have to look to find 4.

First, Second and Twelfth.

*love to see all the love for the twelfth Doc!

12, 7 and 5 would be the top three for me.

I’m still contemplating how I feel about 15, and it feels like he is a possible contender to my top three. Right now, I think I’d go with 4, 12, and 10/14.

I love the love for 12 8 and 6 on here - I don’t think this post has utterly disproven my theory but it is interesting to see which eras people gravitate to! I also do wonder like @kevinwho what the bias is skewing the results on here, because obviously if you asked a slightly less hardcore group 4 and 10, I imagine, would be right at the top.

4, 7 and 9 for me.

4’s basic but Baker is an absolute icon and I think is the absolute best execution of the Doctor’s character; bohemian, utterly alien and endlessly charismatic.

7 is the most interesting Doctor to me, the dark trickster and cosmic chess player is such a unique and fascinating character that still keeps the Doctor’s personality alive, and McCoy is an absolute delight.

9 has my favourite character arc of any Doctor, the damaged warrior learning to feel again and getting over his trauma, all ending in his refusal to commit another atrocity, no matter the cost is utterly beautiful and it’s a real shame Eccleston had such a bad time on set. I should probably pick up the 9DAs some time, huh.

I found this very interesting. Though, my favorites change on an almost weekly basis  it is interesting that at the core my faves are 3, 7, & 12 (and 10 is tied in 3rd place sooo)
I am not familiar with 8 except for the movie. I guess I need to start reading the books with 8 to see what he’s all about.

@PeriDox, I’d actually recommend the audios with Eight over the novels. Because A. the audios are easier to get ahold of than the novels (due to the novels being 19-27 years out of print); and B. the audios actually having McGann in the role and being more consistent in characterization (usually). Don’t get me wrong, there are good Eighth Doctor novels with Vampire Science, Alien Bodies, Option Lock and Legacy of the Daleks springing to mind among the early ones. That said, those authors were going entirely off the TV Movie (which I do love), whereas the audios have McGann putting his own take on the lines.

The Fourth Doctor is basic in the same way a little black dress is basic: A staple that can fit a wide variety of occasions and moods, and a perennial recommendation because it never goes out of style.
The Fourth Doctor is also in my top three. My first Fourth Doctor story was “Destiny of the Daleks” and it was amazing how much charisma he had in the scene where he is trapped under a rock reading a book. How does one make being trapped under a rock look so cool?!
