Me and my wife just got home from a Julbord. What is Julbord you ask, it is Swedish for Christmas Table, basically a smorgasbord with traditional Swedish Christmas food. We ate a lot and my stomach hurt a bit because my stomach is really full. Some highlights

  • A lot of different pickled herrings
  • Christmas ham
  • Different kind os of smoked salmon
  • Ribs
  • Janssons frestelse ( basically potato gratin with anchovies )
  • A lot of sweets

Oh, I love Julbord! I can’t wait to kick off the Julbord season myself!

I’d eat everything you mentioned except for Janssons frestelse. That is literally some of the most disgusting food I know, and I can’t stand it!

(Surströmming is much worse, though).

That is just crazy talk!!! Jansson is so good!!! My highlight every year!!

Iam completely with you on Surströming. But I want to try it again but in the right way. I have only had it with people as a dare and never with people who like it. I think that it might be different then.

I’ve always wondered if pickled herring was something people really eat, or if it’s something used to prank tourists.

Mind you, I’ve never actually tried it in any form, it just sounds unpleasant to me. I suppose if I went to a Julbord, it would be a great opportunity to give it a try. Sure sounds like you enjoyed it!

It’s a fairly common food here in Scandinavia, at least during Christmas and Midsummer. They come in many different variations as well, so there’s something for everyone! Pickled herring might be something of an acquired taste, but I rather like it. I know a lot of Finnish people who don’t, though.

It is tasty and is definitely something we eat. It is not Christmas, Easter or Midsummer without Sill (pickled herring)

I’ve got three different kinds of pickled herring in my fridge at the moment :+1:

My lunch will be buttered rye bread with pickled herring in a mustard sauce with lightly hardboiled egg and a bit of capers on top
I’m getting hungry now

That lunch sounds like the most Scandinavian food ever :joy:

You make a good point
Why not indeed…

Hmmm, that ruined it then! I thought you Danes drink snaps to every meal, like the French do with wine!

They also drink one of these two green drinks:
