Not looking forward to today.

I’ve got terrible subjects at school.

English which I despise, and the dreaded assembly :sob:

What is that?

:+1: Last day before the Easter break and we finish at 1pm!
:-1: Have to stay for a meeting at 1.15 where the senior leadership team are going to tell us how dire our finances are (schools are badly underfunded).

It’s when the whole year group (so over a hundred people) are crammed into a hall to sit down for an hour and get shouted at by the Year Head.

It sucks

At least you speak, read and write English fluently ;)

But I get you! Hang in there! You’ll make it through!

Sadly a common problem everywhere.

Why do you do that? It sounds like a really bad educational environment. Do all schools in the UK do that?

I used to hate assembly as well, we used to always have to sit on the floor cos I guess they didn’t have enough chairs?

It seems so. A lot of UK and US TV shows and movies set in school environments have assmebly scenes in them.

It’s very common here.

We have chairs, but they’re all packed in together.
So you’re always getting kicked in the back :sob::sob::sob:

And don’t get me started on this stupid Seat for Life thing our school is doind

Yep - whole school assemblies happen a lot. It used to be every day but most schools only do them a few times a week (we do three together). As a church school we have to do collective acts of worship but all school have to have communal gatherings.

My eldest hates them too for the same reason as @DontBlink - being shouted at by various heads of year. But that’s more a secondary school thing, I feel.

I was a nerd who quite liked them when I was at school - I found them weirdly relaxing but I hate going to them as a teacher and will find any excuse to get out of them.

But you hate English… ENGLISH! Best subject on the curriculum. (I’m English Lead, studied English Lit at university alongside my teaching degree, and love teaching reading and writing).

I have so many questions, but mostly, why do they shout at everyone? What are they hoping to achieve with this?

Well it’s only what my eldest has told me so that’s filtered through a teenager’s perspective but it’s probably more likely a forceful ‘you need to buck your ideas up so that you all get the results you need to so Ofsted don’t come a knocking…’. Or it might be because of poor behaviour around the school - or even outside of school.

This cold is so annoying! It’s bad enough to be a nuisance, but not so bad that it’s actually seriously negatively affecting me.

Those colds are usually the worst!

Kind of a similar situation for me here. I never actually ended up feeling particularly sick or getting a running nose, I just have had a super sore throat and a mild cough since Tuesday. It’s very annoying because I literally can’t talk and eating is hard and painful. But apart from that I feel relatively normal

I actually thought we were talking about a Handmaid’s Tale character here :joy:

I got too sad with that series and stopped it after a few seasons. It is really good though.
