@deltaandthebannermen Omega did appear in an Audio Novel that was a special release for the 60th. The title was The Box of Terrors.
We’re due for more Rutans. Surely sfx has improved since their first story. I think there are real possibilities. And I don’t mean a love story between a Rutan and a Tythonian, but show me the pitch and I’ll consider it.
Looks like at least one person gets their wish for a returning villain.
Edited for spoiler reasons.
While I don’t necessarily want BOSS from Green Death to return, I think I’d like to see an AI villain more along those lines show up at some point. An AI villain with some personality and charm, that’s somewhat likeable.
(OTOH, it would have been great if the Meeps boss was BOSS. )
Probably:
Gus- I’ve just been curious about the (assumed) AI that was testing the Foretold.
The Boneless- maybe they’re best left untouched but I found them fascinating and scary.
The Beast- I would like the Beast to return and for Sutekh to be an avatar of the Beast that was born to the Osiran race.
The Adipose- cause they’re cute obviously but I have no idea the type of story that should be told with them.
The Kasaavin- similar to the Boneless, found them unsettling.
I could go on BUT I also want the 15th Doctor to face off against Daleks, Cybermen and Weeping Angels (cause I’m greedy!)
Honestly, I was sure Fenric would be the one who waits and I’ve been waiting for him to return in something ever since I saw The Curse of Fenric (I know he was in Gods & Monsters, I personally found it overwhelmingly so-so).
Jamie Mathieson coming back and wrapping up the GUS storyline he didn’t get to write for Oxygen would be great.
Part of me wants Faction Paradox to return just so all the new series only fans get incredibly confused (I think it would be funny).
Now that it’s been namedropped, a weird, out there experimental episode with The Mara would be really cool. Hell, maybe they can get Janet Fielding back for another episode.
Anything with the Land of Fiction; The Mind Robber is still one of the most imaginative and fun episodes of the show nearly 60 years later and in the new era, some really cool stuff could be done with it.
OK, here me out on this one.
The Zarbi were really underutilised in their first adventure - the Vaseline soaked mess that is ‘The Web Planet’.
My suggestion is to have the Animus return as a member of the Pantheon of Discord as the God of Insects.
I would also introduce different sub-species of Zarbi, with each being based on real-life variants of ant.
I mean, could you imagine current Who budgets being applied to Zarbi that are inspired by something as vicious as Fire Ants?
I really like the idea of the Animus returning as a pantheon member but insects seems a bit restricting when compared to the big and nebulous concepts other ones embody. Maybe as god of control or something more abstract instead
Fenric: You know, whith the roll call of the names of the godlike beings at the end of “The Legend of Ruby Sunday” I was just waiting for Fenric to he named. It didn’t hapoen (or did I miss it?). I agree that the time is right for Fenric to return. He would fit right in with the pantheon of chaos. Fantastic potential.
Of your others, there are several good choices. I also loved the Thijarians but I’m at a loss as to what could really be done with them. I guess we could see them from earlier in their history, when they were assassins, but I’m not really sold on that idea.
I absolutely agree with your suggestion of the Tetraps though. A great creature concept stuck in a less than stellar story. A modern prosthetics upgrade and they’d make for a cool visual too.
Ooh, yes. The Kasaavin were great! Unsettling and definitely alien. One of Chibnall’s best creations, in my opinion. And, truth is, they are ripe with potential to be explored. We still know next to nothing about them, really. Gotta admit, I liked the weird dimension that the Doctor was banished to as well. A truly alien setting.
This. A hundred times, this. Give us the Rutans! YES! It’s always seemed strange to me that we keepcseeing Sontarans but the Rutans have only appeared once in the main show. So much opportunity for Rutans. Plus, I have a particular soft spot for green slimy aliens, tentacles and grating voices. Fantastic!
Incidentally, while I said this a few months back, I still feel we should bring Tecteun back. I need the Doctor to be battling their evil step-mother, and I still feel the single timelord who knows the most about regeneration would find a way to survive.
(Wouldn’t it be something if she was Mrs. Flood?)
Only bring back the Zarbi if they also bring back the Zarbi costumes and the actors walking around in them and bumping into the camera. It wouldn’t feel like a proper return otherwise
Actually that would be a surprise. Of all the Time Lord possibilities I’ve considered for Mrs Flood, Tecteun was not among them. Good call. Yeah, that could be interesting indeed!
I’d love to see a return to Vortis. The animus was an inventive and malign presence though I don’t see them as sufficiently Godlike to be part of the pantheon (and I’m averse to the whole “God of Insects” angle. I don’t mind insectile aliens but would be disappointed to see suggestions that insects come under the remit of a God of chaos. Insects are critical to our biodiversity and often prone to negative portrayal).
I think that’s another reason why Vortis could be a good place to revisit. An ecological community of insectile creatures that were not portrayed as evil. Even the Zarbi were just puppets of the animus. The ambition and invention of “The Web Planet” was admirable. The execution? Not so much. Today, however, it could make for a visually stunning episode that carried a really positive ecological message. I’d love to see that!
I’d love to see Omega return. He would make for an excellent series finale big bad.
Like others have said in here, the Rani would be great also. Gillian Anderson would be ideal casting to play her.
Whilst I’m not the biggest fan of The Time Meddler, I’m surprised the new series hasn’t brought the Meddling Monk back yet. I think he would fit the revival very easily.
Yeah, I don’t get it either. There’s so much dramatic potential with Susan. You could really dig into how Susan feels about the Doctor just abandoning her like he did and never returning as promised until years later (even if you factor in Big Finish, he didn’t come back until he was in his eighth incarnation).
Susan’s reaction to the Doctor being the Timeless Child and effectively the original source for regeneration (thanks to Tecteun) would be very interesting too.
Hell, imagine an episode where Susan and Jenny meet. How would Susan react to discovering that the Doctor has a daughter that she never knew about? Imagine you’re really close to a family member, and then you learn there’s a new member of your family that they never told you about. That would really hurt.
I love Omega but he deserves better than he got in “Arc of Infinity”. Bless. Not his best outing. Yes, RTD could make a truly epic villain out of Omega. That, I’d like to see!
Can’t get much better than Big Finish’s MR Omega story though, that was pretty awesome. And I am very fond of Gallifrey: Intervention Earth even though I know many other people don’t like it that much.
