What is the worst series of the revival? (2005-22)

At least I am consistent with my bad and wrong opinions

For me it was a choice between 11 and 12, neither of them I’ve watched more than twice. once on broadcast and second when I bought the blu ray. Though I hated the timeless child, the Fugitive of the Judoon was the first time in the chibnal/whittaker ear that I sat up and was interested in what was happening. I enjoy the Flux series, not sure it it made much sense but better than 11 and 12.

Flux is very much new Who’s ā€œTrial of a Timelordā€, only not executed as well. (Namely, it feels like they removed so much of some of the threads that they should have cut those threads…)

It needs a lost season set from Big Finish, really.

Edit: In case anyone’s interested in my bad opinions, cut the Grand Serpent, and cut Vinder & Bel…

You are probably right about that.
For instance, I liked the character of the Grand Serpent but he brought nothing to the overall story (except an amazing badass scene for Kate Stewart) and was dispatched almost as an afterthought.
Bel and Vinder had a nice storyline but again were rather superfluous to the plot (and why bring Vinder back in Power of the Doctor?)

Edit: Just saw your edit, seems as if we are in agreement

SO TRUE!!! Can’t begin to explain how much I despise this episode :person_shrugging:

Yep, pretty much.

My general feeling is there was probably a separate episode planned for the Grand Serpent and a separate episode for Vinder & Bel, and I would have liked to have seen them, but when they got cut, they should have been cut all the way. Things felt rushed and jumbled, and less threads going on would have helped.

Don’t forget THAT oddity which is also part of the Series 4 Specials.

And to mind, probably the only one worth watching.

OK, I agree with cutting Vinder and Bel - cause they added absolutely nothing to Flux and bother were more insufferable than listening to a seminar hosted by Ian Levine - but the Grand Serpent?

I would honestly have preferred it if the whole season focused more on him: love the performance, it was pure camp.

I think Flux in general is an odd one for me, because much like Series 12, I found it really polarising.

There were some amazing stories there - Chibnall is the only revival era showrunner who I think handled the Sontarans well… after Moffat made them insufferable and RTD’s era just made them kinda meh. Also, the Weeping Angel story was fab.

On the other hand… ā€˜Once, Upon Time’ and ā€˜The Vanquishers’. The latter was just an incredibly unsatisfying conclusion. The former on the other hand was an absolute cluster-[REDACTED].

It’s an odd one for me generally. Don’t love it, but far from hate it. Probably didn’t help that it was made as lockdown was only just easing, so production probably felt the strain throughout; also why I forgive some of the terrible CGI moments too (Dan and Karvanista falling out the Sontaran ship, and the Dalek floating past Bel).

Going back to this point for a moment, there might be a very good reason why it ended up being so boring.

The whole episode had to be drastically re-written because of the choice to film in Dubai - it would be far too hot to use the intended monster costumes, and the actors likely would have been hospitalised from dehydration.

Because originally, it was intended to be an adaptation of ā€˜The Highest Science’.

Honestly wish they hadn’t filmed in Dubai now, because having the Chelonians marching about and adapting that book would have been a lot more entertaining than ā€œHEY LOOK, IT’S ZOE SLATER FROM EASTENDERS!ā€

And he should have been Brax :smiling_face_with_tear:

I can see that! The bus in Planet of the Dead flying through an inter-dimensional rift / the train carriage (and assorted other vehicles) being sent across time and space by the flicker… I can see the connections.

I do wonder what a Highest Science adaptation would look like. Very different from the audio adaptation, I’d imagine. Although (maybe controversially?) I’m really not a fan of the Highest Science, so maybe I wouldn’t have liked it more than Planet (also not a fav) after all!

There’s no way I’m letting this go without a fight! My eldest loved Bel and Vinder - as did I. They were one of the best bits about Flux - along with Karvanista and Jericho.

And nothing - literally nothing in any of Doctor Who from the Taran Wood Beast to BENNI! would ever be as insufferable as anything spouted by him.

Now I’m imagining a scenario where the Taran Wood Beast is called BENNI!! and Vilma is calling for it.
You can have that one for free Big Finish

Oy! Stop giving away my ideas for free!

I can agree with that. Still didn’t help it. Flux was a still a mess. But i’m glad you enjoyed it.

I loved it - War and Village are brilliant episodes and the Sontaran saying ā€˜chocolate’ is top tier Who.

I don’t really think objective claims have much legitimacy when it comes to stuff like this, but the series I personally vibe with/enjoy least are 2, 5, and 8

Oh there’s no objectivity here at all

Okay people, I don’t believe in spreading dislikes, so I am going to point out how every single New Who season is the worst (and thus, none of them is!)

Series 1 is the worst because it was made on a shoestring budget.

Series 2 is the worst because it has that Scotsman thinking he’s a better Doctor than Eccleston!

Series 3 is the worst because it has that new companion thinking she’s the new Rose.

Series 4 is the worst it didn’t allow Catherine Tate to completely take over the show!

The Specials are the worst because they dropped the ball with that final two-parter.

Series 5 is the worst because the Doctor can’t be a young, good-looking dude!

Series 6A is the worst because it made Doctor Who believe it’s an American show.

Series 6B is the worst because no one understands how it wrapped up the season arc.

Series 7A is the worst because it still has Amy and Rory as companions.

Series 7B is the worst because Amy and Rory aren’t companions anymore.

Series 8 is the worst because the Doctor can’t be an old man!

Series 9 is the worst because a season can’t consist of only two-parters!

Series 10 is the worst because it didn’t celebrate 10 seasons of New Who!

Series 11 is the worst because the Doctor can’t be played by a woman!

Series 12 is the worst messed up the ā€œcanonā€ of the show!

Series 13 is the worst because the entire season was in constant flux!

The Series 13 Specials are the worst because they ruined Rasputin by Boney M for us forever!

(This is all a joke of course, if it wasn’t obvious).
