What IS the best twist (but not the best Susan Twist)?

Oh, me too! It was such a lovely old school Delgadoesque reveal as well, I felt. Gave me goosebumps!

Destroy them! Destroy them at once!
I love Earthshock, and that reveal is certainly a highlight of the story (not that there are particularly any low points)

Currently watching through the revival with a couple friends of mine.

I’m hell bent on making sure they don’t find out Simm comes back before World Enough and Time, especially since one of them is a massive fan of the Saxon Master.

I really wish I hadn’t known, would’ve hit a lot harder than it already did.

Is it weird that this is a regular quote of mine whenever I put on a pair of gloves? With requisite hand clench, of course.

Name of the Doctor ending with John Hurt and the Missy Reveal.

Alas this is what comes from never having learned to read.

Not a problem. I just thought I’d separate them out as I think there’s an equally rich discussion to be had re: audio twists etc. I just haven’t been bothered to set up a sister thread yet!

I have an issue with this twist though, hear me out.

“All Twelve of them” makes sense. The Time Lords know that they imposed a twelve-regeneration limit on the Doctor (and that the Tenth Doctor used one to keep the same face), so the Eleventh Doctor is the last Doctor - and “All Twelve” means exactly that - all his faces. There are no more.

So saying “No, sir! All thirteen!” is fun because it’s a sneak peak of the next Doctor but it doesn’t make a lick of sense - this means the Time Lords already know that they give the Doctor a whole new set of regenerations in The Time of the Doctor, making that story all a bit pointless. And they must know that they survive the cuppa-soup because they survive and give the Doctor those more regenerators!

Also it no longer makes sense to say All Thirteen because this isn’t all his faces - now that the Doctor has a whole new set of regenerations, they must be able to assume there will be more than thirteen, so saying “all” doesn’t make sense.

Sorry! Maybe I have overthought this, but it has always bugged me!!

“You know I really think you might.”
I know there is some controversy around only including Tom in The Day of the Doctor but his voice is so distinctive the whole cinema cheered before he even appeared on screen.

I’m hugely ambivalent about the Curator but that knitted version is gorgeous!

I imagine Sara Kingdom’s exit would have been a surprise when it aired.

Earthshock and particularly those silent credits absolutely emotionally Devastated little 8 year old me who’d grown attached to (and frankly was quite a bit like) Adric. 20ish years later and I’ve never recovered

Yeah I only got a kick out of it since I like to turn my critical thinking skills off when I’m watching something for the first time, so I was hootin’ and hollerin’ during the whole reveal and name drops like the Mara etc. Now ofc looking back the whole thing wasn’t particularly great (the finale was cringe inducing, even with said critical thinking turned off) and even the name drops don’t make sense bc there’s already a loosely established set of ‘gods’ in the Whoniverse which RTD has now retconned and put instead a whole bunch of unrelated villains that don’t make sense if you think about it for too long

12 regenerations means 13 incarnations though. 13 is the expected number for “all of them”

Ok, story-wise, my favorite is probably River Song = Melody Pond. I just really like River and her dynamic not just with the Doctor, but with Amy and Rory as well, so it was neat to see.

Shock value wise? Ok for this, I need to give some background info first. Leading up to this episode, I had been spoiled in advance of so many twists or big moments in New who. One of the first scenes a friend showed me to get me to watch DW was the ending scene of Doomsday. I knew about River being Melody, I knew Amy, Clara, and Bill would all “die” and whatnot.

There was a single twist I was not aware of. A single twist that, anytime my friends would discuss the episode, they would tell me to cover my ears. All of this buildup leading to what became my favorite finale for a series: WORLD ENOUGH AND TIME JOHN SIMS MASTER RETURN REVEAL, WHAT A FREAKIN SURPRISE LIKE OH MY GOD THAT CAUGHT ME SO OFF GUARD LIKE WHAT???

Also SAME WITH HEAVEN SENT, MY FRIENDS BUILT THAT EP UP AND LIKE WOW THAT ENDING REVEAL OF THE TIME LOOP WAS INSANE WHAT A GOOD EPISODE!!!

So shock value wise, my friends building up mystery about Twelfth Doctor episodes really made watching his run a special experience lol.

Sure, but @shauny is right - The Capaldi Doctor, at the time, was the 14th. We had already gotten Doctors 1 through 11 + War + Tennant’s copy that went off with Rose. That’s 13, making Smith the 13th and final one…until he got a new set of regenerations.

Of course that all goes out the window once we introduce Tecteun and the 451,308 other Doctors that came before Hartnell, or whatever, but anyway, yeah, the math is wrong.

By the way, Shauny, thanks for ruining that moment for me. That thought had never occurred to me.
