What is everyone's plans for watching the new episodes next week?

I think at the core there’s a huge difference between personal choice or a parent’s assessment, compared to someone outside advocating for other people’s kids to stay up so late to watch their show.

And it’s worth consideration that in the case of Doctor Who’s upcoming series, it’s not just a one off, it’s 7 weeks in a row.

Oh I definitely didn’t take it as if you meant my kids specifically :slightly_smiling_face:

It is almost starting to get eerie

And something I realised yesterday when the TV was on in the background, I have actually started to react when hearing the name Bill said out loud :joy:

I think people are over-exaggerating the extent to which RTD mentioned kids staying up because a lot of headlines really made it the focus, but like this is the actual full quote about midnight viewings:

And bear in mind, a midnight viewing could be lovely. Stay up! Have a party! And that includes kids, too - plenty of children went to midnight openings of bookstores when the new Harry Potter books were released. It was part of the game, part of the narrative, a story they’d tell for years to come. I’d especially recommend midnight for Episode 7, because it’s shocking, frankly, and there might be screaming! And the planning of a viewing can be an absolute joy. I remember my Paul McGann midnight vigil as really fun and daft and dedicated, all part of the warp and weft of my life as a Doctor Who fan. These anecdotes make us who we are.

I think it’s been mentioned before, but there’s a huge different between kids staying up for a book release (or new years) being once or twice a year vs staying up every week for 7 weeks.

Also this just wouldn’t be an issue at all if they’d kept to the schedule for the 60th specials, that schedule was fine, great even, changing it to this is doing nothing but creating more issues for UK viewers

I’m not saying they should stay up for 7 weeks and I don’t really think RTD is either, I think he’s mainly suggesting that it might be fun for people to do a little watch party for the premiere or finale.

And I’m not even necessarily in disagreement that the 60th schedule was probably better, I just think a bigger deal is being made of it than is really necessary

Assume he’s saying you should have a watch party for the premiere and the finale, he’s then also saying stay up for episode 7, even if he’s not saying stay up for 3-6, that’s still 3 out of 7 weeks.

For young kids that’s not a great suggestion, and for teens sure it’s fine for some, but it’s running exactly over GCSE and A-level exam windows

GCSEs start - May 6th
Season start - May 11th
A-Levels start - May 13th
GCSEs end - June 21st
Season ends - June 22nd
A-Levels end - June 25th

But again I don’t think he really is suggesting that everyone should stay up for all of those and include their kids, as the whole point of he’s making in the rest of the letter is that the point of the midnight release is for people to be able to watch at whatever time works best for them. With the midnight release he’s saying that some people might enjoy doing a late watch party for some episodes, and that kids can be included in those and have a good time. He’s not making any mandate that people stay up or even really saying that it’s somehow better to stay up for it than to watch it later, just saying that it could be fun for people who want to.

i mostly specified teenagers because that’s the rough age of people who are going to be taking exams. like, if you’re worried about people’s GCSE’s and A-levels you’re not worried about young kids. but again i really don’t think it’s that deep.

is there any update on this? Like how long each episode is going to be considered spoiler territory for? Everyone on this forum is great so I’m sure will use their own good judgement and it won’t be a big issue, just curious

Suddenly finding myself wanting to stay up till 2am to watch when it drops, apparently its going to take more willpower than I thought to wait for bbc one

I would say we need to at least keep spoilers spoilered until the end of the series because people may well be missing multiple episodes before being able to catch up and I would hate for anyone to feel they couldn’t safely stroll around the forum for fear of spoilers.

Yes please can easily talk about spoiler points inside threads using the spoiler blur feature

We don’t want topic titles to include spoilers for a long time though.

So if Ruby’s mother turns out to be the Rani (not speculation, just a joke scenario) no topic titles called

“OMG! The Rani is Ruby’s Mum!”

Ok I am feeling the hype right now
The episodes drop at 01:00 around here, but who am I kidding? I need to watch at least Space Babies when it drops :sunglasses:

I have to say on The Devil’s Chord on the other hand I am a bit trepidatious after the little preview they sent out

You know there is being “camp”, “chewing the scenery” and “over the top”, and let’s face it we have had all of that in spades over the decades. But there is also just plain bad acting… I’ll reserve judgement till the actual episode of course, in context it might work.
The Maestro’s costume is great, that must have taken forever for the costume department - and it would make a fantastic cosplay
BTW when a person is in drag, what pronouns do you use?

Depends on the person. Drag doesn’t necessarily mean trans, so whatever they go by. For example, Divine was gay, but not trans, and drag was his work clothes.

Edit: Though I suppose “when on stage” vs. “when not on stage” could get tricky…

Yeah I guess I thought about when they are “in character”. I did know that they are not all trans.
To be honest what little I have seen of people in drag shows and the like is just not for me and so I’ve never given much thought on how to address a person in drag.

Disclaimer: I don’t care about which clothes people choose to wear, I honestly couldn’t care less. It’s the “way over the top camp energy” that seems synonymous with Drag Queens that I just do not enjoy.

Eh, I like camp, and Divine’s actually one of the big inspirations for Ursula in the Little Mermaid, so I got rather interested in them because of that. (And ended up liking their music!)

Personally, more and more these days, I just refer to everyone as ‘they’ or by name, or similarly. Most people aren’t offended by they, and I like the idea of pronouns being gender neutral anyways.

I suppose just using “they” works in this regard.

In Danish I don’t really think we have something that is directly comparable to “they” as a personal pronoun.
“Dem” is the most direct translation but it is distinctly plural, so it doesn’t really work.
“De” is also either plural or really formal (as in addressing royalty).
So we are kind of left with “han” and “hun” which is “he” and “her” hence the interest in how to address a person in drag :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m not sure you’d really be going wrong by addressing Maestro as royalty…
