What (DW) are you currently watching? (Part 2)

In my efforts to 100% Sil, I watched the first episode of Sil and the Devil Seeds of Arodor.

Now, I do admire ‘fan’ productions, and have a great respect for Reeltime and Keith Barnfather. But…this is hardwork. Some really weird choices of framing for shots. Sakantula Ramanee putting hardly any emotion into her lines; Janet Henfrey looking like she wonders what she has signed up for. And Nabil Shaban acting so over the top without any of the subtlety he brought to Sil on TV. His glory days were definitely behind him when he did this. The shoddy costume doesn’t help at all and his ‘transport’ is stupidly bulky. And did they ‘disable’ it because it didn’t work properly or something because half the episode is the two guards pushing the bloody thing around corridors while Shaban shouts and wails (he’s supposed to be trying to escape but decides to make as much noise as he possibly can!).

Not sure I have the stamina for all four episodes in one go. Going to have to spread this out.

Legitimately, thank you. Ever since seeing it gifted to Jeremy Corbyn, I’ve wondered what this weird-ass story is like. Not much info online.

Another Oswin fan! She’s one of my favorites. Really interesting character and had [1] a lot of future potential.

I’m planning on rewatching this at some point. I remember enjoying the episode. I agree with you on most of your points besides the Amy/Rory stuff but it also doesn’t bring the episode down a lot.

I’m in the middle of rewatching Ambassadors of Death right now. This is my first rewatch of this story, and it might as well be brand new because I didn’t remember much at all. I still haven’t decided yet if I like it or not :face_with_monocle:

It was a really fun story to watch. On its own as a New Year’s romp with Dalek action it serves its purpose very well. I quite like what they do with Captain Jack and the other Jack (the characters mind you, not the actors, both of which can go take a hike to the nearest jail) and in terms of the TARDIS Team I feel like they were well balanced and that the story does a solid job of them working as a good trio for the last time. Yaz also really has taken more of a spotlight here, being the de facto leader while Thirteen is away and she’s now much more driven and taking charge. It truly feels like she’s grown into that “later stage” of companion-ness (companionship?). In terms of the Daleks, this really feels like its sprinkling in stuff from various Dalek stories, you have Daleks as a tool of humanity a la Power as well as victory Victory, you have Daleks vs Daleks a la Remembrance, Daleks mixed with human DNA a la Series 1 finale and the Series 3 two-parter and I think it all works out quite nicely. I’m obviously biased because I love these silly angry bins with death rays but they’re just fun in this episode.

I really like the political intrigue and build-up at the start, I like that the Reconnaissance Dalek from the last special basically comes back and then later has to confront its brethren and defend its actions, only to obviously be destroyed. You almost kinda feel bad for it, you know, for as much as you can feel bad for a xenophobic killing machine. Finally, while I do wish there was more of it, they do acknowledge the consequences from the recent finale meaning we get the best Ryan and Thirteen scene that there ever has been and Graham and Ryan get a really sweet ending as they leave the TARDIS.

Sure, Tosin Cole is not a very good actor (nothing against him personally, he seems like a wonderful guy) and both of these characters may not have been developed as well as some previous companions but Ryan and Graham have a wonderful dynamic and had an enjoyable arc across Series 11 and 12. And maybe it could have been executed better, but Ryan did make up with Graham, start to patch things up with his dad and started reconnecting with his friends. That plus all the crazy stuff that’s gone down, I absolutely buy that he would want to stay on Earth and of course Graham would stick by him. Like Barbara and Ian as well as Amy and Rory, they’re a package deal. And hey, they got to leave without dying or anything so that’s nice. Also some alien cameos, that’s just fun. Sure it’s nostalgia but it’s a New Year’s Special I’ll let it slide.

Story is a bit messy though. I liked the political behind-the-scenes stuff and felt that was interesting commentary on corruption and politicians being in the pockets of big business and then with these new “security drones” that ties into the surveillance state and politicians (often right wing) promising “security” via more surveillance and increasing the power of law enforcement. But Leo felt a bit like a plot device, there’s no real stated reason as to why he would clone the DNA he found into new Daleks other than… he’s really enthusiastic about his job, I guess? They also basically drop Jo Pattersson completely after the new Daleks go rogue, after that one scene she is never mentioned again. We also get too little Dalek v Dalek action and that plotline is wrapped up too soon, wish we got more of it, though it is made up for a little bit with the scene of the cloned Recon Dalek trying to get back with its kin and being rejected. Finally, don’t like how Jack Robertson just gets away scot-free with trying to sell humanity out to the Daleks, like what was up with that? Should’ve had Thirteen expose him so he could go to jail… or you could just have the Daleks exterminate him because no one would feel sorry about him. And also it feels wrong for the companions’ plan to take care of this new Dalek problem to be “just confront Robertson in person and in public”. Oh yeah and the Harry Potter reference isn’t great to include, but it’s a single throwaway line so it doesn’t bother me that much.

I prefer Resolution most definitely, but this is still just a fun Dalek romp overall. Maybe it’s just me and Daleks, I can’t get enough of them.

7/10.

But I love them…

(seriously they’re one of the many elements of Delta that I find SO FUN. And I love their interactions with the Bannermen and Goronwy.)

I actually ended up watching the second episode and…I didn’t hate it. Christopher Ryan comes in as Kiv and is huge fun (and recreates the character - sans makeup and costume - pretty well). Not sure about Sakuntula Ramanee clearly indulging in nepotism to get her son a role in this though…

A bit like K9, there is a decent story here about Sil being responsible for distributing a dangerous drug, but (whisper it) I just don’t think Nabil Shaban is very good in this.

This evening my partner and I watched Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. It’s a good episode. Not the best in the world, but solid. It had enough fun moments and one-liners to really keep me entertained. The robots got a couple of chuckles out of me. I did wonder what the First Doctor was doing in it, but I’m sure that’ll be explained at some point.

We’ve moved from Pertwee into Tom Baker, and finished Robot and The Ark In Space over the last two nights. And why? Because, look, Tom Baker is absolutely mesmerizing in this part, and Bob Holmes and Philip Hinchcliffe are there for Robot, a handover episode that’s really kind of the last Third Doctor story in a way, but then they announce such a change of tone with Ark In Space, which is outright body horror for kids! And works!

Robot is pretty great, the design for the giant lad is excellent, so are the voice and performance, and the SRS characters are so fun, I love Miss Winters’ fascist scientist outfit lol. Tom wins you over almost immediately, Sarah again befriends a creature very believably, and Harry provides comedy and punching, it’s a great trio. I feel a bit sad for The Brig at the end as they go off for adventures without him. I wish he’d been back once a series or so the whole time, he’s a very grounding character. Such a fun mad scientist end to the previous era, with a new jolt of energy and physical comedy from Tom. 4/5

The Ark In Space is one of my best of the best. Kind of a perfect Part 1, essentially only the lead cast, escalating threat and mystery, great set design, that monologue, surprising cliffhanger. And then the rest of the story keeps propelling forward at a perfect pace, with Bob Holmes making sure to take all opportunities for fun and depth with language, to add humor and lightness to a wonderfully dark and desperate situation. The Wirrn seem like a great one to bring back in the modern show, right?! Modern lighting/cinematography on mutating people and pupal states and big insects seems like a good idea. This one is 5/5 for me.

The fact that these stories all bleed together is still very cool to me. There are a couple of things in the UNIT era and then this series as well which are more arc-y and ongoing narrative-y than is typical for a lot of the classic era! I think it’s better when there’s a sense that it’s all accumulating, but it also doesn’t have to be a Bad Wolf that we’re arc’ing about every time, it can just be “we need to get back to the TARDIS” or even “Mike Yates’ loyalties” haha. That’s still plenty rewarding to a viewer when you do it well.

Did The Christmas Invasion because it was the first TV Club thread I saw. More thoughts going there but big takeaway is how for me it’s impossible not to watch any Tenth Doctor episodes without this knowledge that he is doomed. In a way it’s almost an intentional inversion of the VNA’s Seventh Doctor, which Russell T. Davies would have absolutely been aware of subconsciously. In the first of many moments of misplaced righteousness, he forgets to play the spoons and decides to topple an empire and in the end it absolutely shags him. I think I could watch all of Tennant’s first era (bloody hell) again and have a tough time telling you whether this reading is intentional. If it is intentional, it’s harder still to pin down which side of the argument the show ultimately hews to in this era, not in an ambiguous sense but more in a sense of dissonance. It’s already here, right at the start of things.

Having recently rewatched series 1 to 5 of New Who, I will say I believe it’s completely intentional!

RTD was bloody cracked! He did such a job seeding where the 10th Doctor ends up, and now you’ve said it’s the perfect inversion of the 7th doctor’s arc, I can’t unsee it!

Well, my essays and self-assessments are done. So what better way to celebrate and unwind than to spend my long weekend watching Who (before some exams starting in a week…)

Hopping around a bit. I watched Gridlock, a story that I really love. Again, a story that I have come to appreciae more and more over the years.

Then skipped ahead to The Giggle, I think it is the first time I’ve watched it since around the time it first came out. I wish I could say I enjoyed it as much as I did last time, but I was a bit less forgiving of it this time round.

And now I’m going backwards and I’m just about to put on The Android Invasion. Season 13 is my favourite season, there is not a story I dislike in that one! Possibly not the best story in the season, but there’s still a lot I enjoy about this story.

And we’re off to a great start. A little slow in points but I’m liking this so far! And Jodie just is the Doctor. I’m liking her a lot too!

Man, I love everyone’s dynamics[1] in this serial (I’m only on part one). I don’t rewatch DW that often, so when I do it feels like the first time.

This evening my partner and I watched A Town Called Mercy. I’d forgotten how good Matt Smith was in this one. He starts off as the Madman with a box, goes into his shouty version, and then has the “lonely god” bits at the end. I also think that the talk he has with Kahler-Jex are really reflective of things we will see with Day of the Doctor. It has been seen before, but I think it was purposeful this time. Don’t know why, it;s just a feeling.

3.5/5

We started watching The Power of Three, but my partner was nodding off worse than Brian so we stopped just as Amy was about to shock the Doctor. Obviously I know how it goes, but the first 30 minutes of this episode are great. It’s a real shame that it falls flatter than a spray-painted door.

Rating to come when we finish it tommorrow.
