TERROR OF THE AUTONS: Episodes 1 and 2
An utterly delightful evening’s viewing! Such a well known story, but I’ve seldom enjoyed it quite as much as I did last night. It’s the first story where the full UNIT family comes to the fore, the first with Jo AND the first to feature the Master.

Isn’t Jo great? Immediately brave and pro-active. She’s resourceful and compassionate from the off. Love the scene where the Doctor is trying to tell Jo that her services are not required but she wins him over completely because she’s used her own initiative, made herself helpful, is thoroughly enthusiastic and genuinely sweet.

And the Master? What’s to say that hasn’t already been said? Delgado still surprises me with just how dangerous he can seem (a great example being his first scene with Rossini) yet how charismatic he also is. A perfectly judged portrayal.

Bliss. I’m in Doctor Who bliss, with episodes 3 and 4 to come this evening!

The Time Meddler, because I’m in the mood to watch more Peter Purves (I’d only seen him in The Chase). Today I learned that only three of his serials exist in their entirety :upside_down_face:

Edit: I miscounted lol. He has four serials. My bad, Peter.

I love ‘The Time Meddler’. I find it an utter joy, as well as enjoying it for the groundbreaking story that it also was. Do share your thoughts. I’d love to know how you found it?

Watching Episode 1 of Pyramids of Mars.

Finished the episode and then jumped over and watched the last ten minutes of The Legend of Ruby Sunday. And that sense of dread that you feel is very similar between the two. The only thing that would’ve made the Series 14 cliffhanger better (though it might’ve ruined the reveal) would be to have had organ music playing through it.

I’m sorry to say I thought it was just “alright” :no_mouth:. The First Doctor and the Eleventh are two sides of the same coin for me: I like them, but their serials leave more to be desired.

TTM meandered too much for me, which is my constant complaint about One. Too much talking and not enough of anything actually happening. I didn’t care for the setting either. If the events surrounding 1066 actually interested me, maybe I’d think of the serial more fondly. The last episode was the best out of the set.

I like the Monk, though. He seems “nice” by Time Lord standards. I laughed when One put on the robes and the Monk affectionately said, “It looks nice on you”.

Time to watch The Aztecs.

No need to apologise. We all have different tastes.

I think that is a fair point and reflective of the TV of the time. Pacing to content ratio can take a little getting used to. If made today, the whole story would be packed into a cracking 45 minutes (and wouldn’t lose much in the way of content, to be fair).

The Time Meddler is brilliant. I still remember seeing it for the first time when it was repeated as part of the 1992 repeat season. The Monk is such a great character.

I see why everyone loves The Aztecs. That was the best One serial I’ve seen, but I couldn’t tell you why. Maybe it was the inclusion of a so-called Doctor romance that got me interested…(it wasn’t lol, but that aspect was intriguing. It reminded me of Fifteen and Rogue, a love at first sight-like relationship that came out of nowhere).

Time for Silver Nemesis.

That’s some whiplash you’ll be getting going from The Aztecs to Silver Nemesis!

If it weren’t for the low rating, I probably would have watched something else. That 3.04 rating intrigued me! I love the promo photos they took for this, also, so I’m surprised its ranked so low (and there’s jazz!)

Edit: I liked it, actually. Three out of five.

Finished off The Ribos Operation yesterday.
Just a rollicking good quest story.

And a bit of morning Who - The Time of Angels & Flesh and Stone, the Doctor just bit Amy’s hand

‘The Ribos Operation’ is a story I really enjoy. It’s a rich world and very different for a Doctor Who story (especially for the time it was made). Full of sparkling dialogue, wonderful character moments and a genuinely different plot. It’s a true delight to me.

TERROR OF THE AUTONS: Episodes 3 and 4

Just delightful! One thing I’ve never really noticed before (just get swept up in the action) is, on hearing the bullets can’t stop the autons, Yates immediately jumps in the car and uses it to knock the auton policemen over the edge. For Yates’s first story, he really got the opportunity to show off his quick thinking. He’s really great in this story!

The Master shows off his ruthlessness well, hurling technicians from radio telescope gantries and seems like part of the series furniture from his very first story. OK, so he abandons his plan and aids the Doctor in defeating the Nestenes a little too quickly, but given that pretty much everything the Master does (to this day) makes most sense if you consider that he’s really more obsessed with the Doctor than anything else, it still kind of works.

This is a story I’ve always enjoyed, but I’ve appreciated it a lot more the last couple of times I’ve watched it, with this viewing being particularly noteworthy.

Truly great stuff. Next up for me (next weekend) is a long time favourite of mine; ‘The Mind of Evil’.

Agreed. Especially since the way Gallifrey was brought back meant - as far as I remember - that they had a very good in-story reason for keeping themselves isolated. Ideal ground for keeping them out of the stories except for special occasions. So the best from “Last of the Time Lords” combined with great potential for specials. Just thinking about the “Flux” season - some more episodes and an armada of TARDISes trying to stop Tecteun. With the usual, The Doctor succeeds where whole armies fail.
I do like Season 13 as it is. At the same time, it could have been so much more epic. It’s like getting zapped back in the past by a weeping angel - all that potential for the future gone.
