What Are You Currently Watching?

Actually, they’re just regular aliens. Obviously.

Oh, I remember reading this back in the day. Ahhh, the Wilderness Years. Such a long time ago now (thankfully).

There is an AMAZING Doctor Who story to be told on Easter Island (and, no, “Eye of Heaven” isn’t it).

If they like Blink and you want to introduce them to Big Finish, I’d recommend Fallen Angels from the first Classic Doctors, New Monsters boxset. Very effective and without having to explain the series arc of the other Big Finish Angel stories.

And this, right here, is the “Moffat Quandary”. On form, I genuinely believe he is one of the very finest writers working in television. Where he is disciplined and avoids letting his “lets play with ALL the toys” mentality get the better of him, he turns in some of the slickest, cleverest and most thought provoking stories ever.

Having Angels take the form of different types of statues IS a great idea (especially when not overplayed) as it adds uncertainty and increases that sense of unease about the everyday (which DW typically excels at). I still maintain, the Cherubs were an outstanding idea and creepy as can be, but the Statue of Liberty? Really? I love Steven Moffat’s writing, I really really do, but when excess comes to the fore it always disappoints me.

More of this please…

We watched Blink with the kids today!

No, just hasn’t watched much Doctor Who. She said she has only ever watched about 6 episodes and most of them were because of me. One of them was Space Babies :grimacing:

Oh they really enjoyed it, although Jake (10) was hiding most of the time (behind a giant plush toy, not the sofa). They were very scared by the ending when they saw that any statue could be a Weeping Angel!

Amber (12) made me promise that those 4 were the only Angels and they are all extinct really. I didn’t have the heart to say they were in more episodes, although now I want her to see them!

Apparently Jake couldn’t get to sleep and was crying. Oops! I might be in trouble for that lol.

But oh well, I’m happy they will always remember this day and maybe they will get interested more in Doctor Who now!

Just rewatched Demons of the Punjab and it totally took me by surprise and made me cry!

Doctor Who never does that!

I’m heading over to the guide and upping my rating to 5/5. This will also get a proper review as it’s the next story in my History of the Universe marathon blog.

It is such a brilliant story. I can see a direct line from The Massacre to this story and the whole time I was watching it, I was thinking about how so many fans cut off their noses to spite their face and possibly never watched this.

It is Doctor Who to its core and Whitaker is 100% the Doctor. Mandip Gill and Bradley Walsh - and the whole guest cast - are wonderful and only Tosin Cole lacks a bit but that’s partly because he’s not really given anything to do. The whole episode looked beautiful!

I have a few friends who more or less abandoned Who during Whitaker’s time and I really want to show them this episode and get them to explain how it doesn’t work as Doctor Who (although I’m aware that probaby wouldn’t work).

Oh and if anyone wants to feel old… I had to first explain to the kids what DVDs were as I was worried they wouldn’t understand the whole “DVD extra” plot point in Blink, they didn’t really understand me at first but then Amber (12) said:

“Oh yes I got a Frozen DVD for getting my COVID jab but if I want to watch it I can just put it on Disney+, not really sure why people like those discs”

Haha 🫨💀

My two (the youngest is 12) know full well what DVDs are (particularly as there are shelves full in our living room. Frankly that’s poor education on the part of your sister. You’lll be telling me next that they haven’t been educated in the correct films - The Goonies, Labyrinth, Back to the Future, Ghostbuster - you know, all the literary classics.

You know Doctor Who has been on for a long time when an episode from 2007 references a common piece of technology that most kids today don’t recognise. Now I feel old again!

Watched the first two parts of Keeper of the Traken today! I love the costuming.

Demons of the Punjab is a great story. High up in 13s best, and it actually teaches history well that a lot of people don’t know about, which is what Doctor Who was originally supposed to be about.

If it has a weakness, it’d be the aliens, as it might’ve been better as a pure historical. But that’s mostly a quibble…

They love the Labyrinth. They made me a hand-made card for my birthday a few years ago showing me crossing the Bog of Eternal Stench :joy:

Next step, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders of Mars…

(You know, after reading that in all the scenes where the goblin king was juggling balls, the hands juggling were of a juggler standing behind him, I always think about that when seeing it.)

Oh no, Jake (10) had to sleep in his Dad’s bed last night because he was so scared!

We are taking them to a French market this morning and my sister (his mum) said she hopes there are some statues there :joy: so cruel!

Apparently they like Doctor Who and want to watch more episodes!! Jake even said the scarier the better.

What should I subject them to? I’m thinking maybe The Empty Child or Silence in the Library

It is one of, if not the best, 13th Doctor story. So very emotional and gripping. Definitely Yaz’s best outing for me :+1:

And I love when Yaz’s Nani criticises the design of Yaz’s wedding mark(?) when she made it herself about 60 years earlier
