Finished the first episode with Twelve Doctor “Deep Breath”. Capaldi is a great actor, I remember him from some Ancient Rome episode and I’m looking forward to the next episodes
Rewatching Magicians Apprentice/Witches Familiar and I think I’m starting to ship 12/Clara…
Well, everyone else in this house is asleep and I’ve got half a glass of white wine left…
On with the final two parts of The Deadly Assassin
Good! They’re my second favorite ship!
Just rewatched The Rescue because it came up on the site’s randomiser and I had a bit of spare TV time. All ready for TV Club next week.
I really enjoyed “Deep Breath”. Still do, in fact. Never quite understood why it is seen as less popular. A string and simewhat different opener for a new Doctor.
This week, I have “Survival” lined up for my Friday/Saturday evening viewing. It’s been a while since I last saw this, but I always enjoy it. I remember it as Ainley’s best Master performance and it’ll be interesting to see if my recollection holds up.
I finished Fury from the Deep today and I found it so energising! It was Fun Scary, there were several interesting side characters with distinct personalities, they got to go in a helicopter again, and, most importantly, Victoria got a gorgeous send-off. I’ve noticed her getting more competent at adventuring and that’s been really pleasing, but it is also super fair to just not feel suited to it. You’re right Victoria, it is traumatising, and just because the Doctor and Jamie raise their eyebrows at you when you doesn’t mean you’re wrong! Oof, guess this is what Fifteen was getting at when he had that chat with Fourteen, eh? I’m glad she found a hopefully good home situation since she did basically join the team as a refugee. Good resettlement work, Doctor! I also tried to pay attention to the Jamie & Victoria stuff because it’s not the show’s fault I ship the Doctor and Jamie so hard that I’ve been basically ignoring their growing bond Lastly, I like that Two is more comfortable with letting go of companions than One. The last couple of departures he’s had Jamie still with him, so that probably makes it easier, but it’s still nice to see. Who’d have thought that Two, the man who helped Daleks run social experiments on Jamie and Kemel, would be so emotionally mature?
Secret of the Stars is easily my least favourite episode of SJA so far. I normally love camp and cheesy, but the villain’s actor just plays said camp in a way I never found charming. It really felt like I was watching a kid’s show again (which tbf I have been since I started… but this felt much more kiddy than a lot of other episodes). That being said, main performances are still great; and Liz Sladen could never do any wrong.
I recently finished my re-watch of The Romans which was as enjoyable as ever. I love Vicki in this - she seems to be having such a great time. Coincidentally I’ve also been watching I,Claudius on the BBC iPlayer. Also very enjoyable but it was interesting to watch two very different takes on the same historical period (give or take a decade or two).
I’ve just started The Web Planet which is one of my least stories. The first episode is actually very good, although poor William Hartnell seems to having a bit of a nightmare trying to remember his lines.
You are not alone
I love “Fury”. Wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it when I first saw the animation as it is a story with such a heightened reputation and such stories don’t always hold up to scrutiny when finally seen. I think “Fury” definitely holds up. Superb stuff!
I’ve actually never seen the animation
But I love the story nevertheless Found a recon that included linking narration from Frazer Hines, really good stuff
Never managed to get hold of a recon, but the animation really worked for me (despite people’s grumbles about the ‘arty’ angular style and long arms). There’s a real energy infusing it all. Great stuff!
The Invasion: A phenomenal story. So good and a very good way of utilizing the Cybermen in their more “big stomping robot army” characterization where they are still very much allowed to be creepy, scheming, and emotionless (the emotion machine test in episode 5 is one of the creepiest Cyberman scenes ever IMO), but it’s so long and probably could have been cut down to an incredibly pacey 6 parter (I know there were behind the scenes problems basically this entire season that caused the expansion from this from 4 to 8 parts).
I recently finished rewatching I Claudius - it’s incredibly stagey but SO good! I think it’s the reason I was disappointed Sian Philips only sat on a bar stool in 73 Yards but I do get that she is now older than the really old version of Livia in Claudius
All the recons are ‘available’ online. And doesn’t the DVD have a recon with or without HInes’ narration.
Currently in the middle of The Horns of Nimon. Very excited to finish and finally watch Shada! It’s been hyped up to me a lot. Which version do you all recommend? There seems to be a recon and two different animations.
I watched the version on the Season 17 collection set, I found it to be the best version to consume
The Nimon be praised!
Actually, there are apparently even more versions than that with:
*The 1992 VHS version
- The 2003 audio version with McGann
- The animated version of above.
- The 2012 Novelization/audiobook.
- The 2017 Animation featuring role reprisal by the surviving cast.
- The 2021 Animation: Unlike '17, serial style instead of omnibus style (available only on the Season 17 boxset)
And Adams supposedly didn’t even like the story.
But for extra torture, Douglas Adams adapted parts of Shada into his novel Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, so it could be argued that any adaptation of Dirk Gently is also a Shada adaptation, including, but not limited to:
- The 2005 stage adaptation Dirk
- The 2007 Radio 4 adaptation
- The expanded CD version of the above.
- The 2010 Television series Dirk Gently
- The 2016 Television series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
- A 2015 Comic book adaptation.
But that wasn’t what you asked. So, to aswer the question you did ask, I recently watched the 2017 version and found it enjoyable. I would reccomend it.
