Three things to talk about. Rewatched The Seeds of Doom yesterday, it clicked with me way more this time. I still think the climax is a bit overstretched and that this could have been 5 parts rather than 6 and I still think parts 1 and 2 are the best, but still, I get why people love it so much now. Bumped up from a 7/10 to a 9/10.

Then continued S8 today with MotOE and Flatline. Really loved both.

The former (I can’t be f’d to write the whole title) had a creepy train locale, I love a creepy train locale, it had some great characters and themes too. They did 12’s more “abrasive” traits much better here, so even when he’s being rude or upfront he’s not unlikable. Gus was an interesting villain kinda like House from The Doctor’s Wife, though not as well-done in my opinion. But there seemed to be the implication that something was behind Gus (my guess is Missy) so that might be followed up on in later episodes. I think the mummy was awesomely done and the little clock adds tension. The way it is used in a fake-out too where you think it’s going for Clara but it’s someone else is also brilliant. Definitely S8’s best so far, 10/10.

Flatline was also great. A fantastic concept that is executed pretty damn well, I love it when Doctor Who goes truly alien, something that’s basically impossible for humans to understand. Kinda Lovecraftian in a way, it reminded me of The Colour out of Space. I liked Rigsy, I thought the monsters were scary and inventive and the idea of Clara as the Doctor was interesting too. And it wasn’t a Mary Sue thing, she had to learn and use effort, it wasn’t just “here’s the sonic and psychic paper and lookie the issue is gone”. 12’s little speech at the end is one of his best moments so far in my opinion. My only gripes are that Clara slags off Danny again. I get why she does it, but I don’t like how she does it. Say you’re doing something with the Doctor, he knows he exists and accepts him to a degree. Lie about the trouble, sure, but don’t act like nothing is happening. Also 12’s way of sending the Boneless back is a little unclear and just kinda happens. Despite those issues, this story’s great. 9/10.

After the last two episodes being rather disappointing it’s nice with two back-to-back bangers, you love to see it.

Finished The Dalek Invasion of Earth after a short break! I’m gonna miss Susan :sob: The Doctor’s farewell speech was so good but her ending felt kinda rushed…

Just watched the last 2 episodes of ‘Invasion of the Dinosaurs’. Heartbroken over Mike Yates :sob:

I also watched The Rescue this evening. It’s short and sweet—actually might’ve benefited from a 3rd part.

Finished the Zygon 2 Parter. I still love it as much as I always have. Great plot and the speech is amazing as always.

Struggling to get through Enemy of the World rn. On episode 4 and it’s just really not gelling with me. I can see what they’re trying to do but I’m just not feeling it. Why did this need to be 6 parts again?

I finished rewatching series 7B and the 50th anniversary specials on Saturday! “Cold War” was the only 11th Doctor episode I’d never seen growing up (as I’ve said before, I watched episodes if my parents or brother wanted to show it to me, or I read the episode description and it sounded cool, and I only watched episodes in chronological order if I was watching them as they released, which was applicable from “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” to one of the last few episodes of series 12), so I finally watched it (I wasn’t missing much except for being jumpscared by seeing a young Josh O’Connor), and got the “Geronimo” badge once I’d rated all of those. I know it was mostly fan service, but I still adore “The Day of the Doctor,” and rewatching it felt like a warm hug (I can still quote a decent amount of it for someone who hasn’t seen it for 5+ years). I rewatched “The Crimson Horror” on a loop for a little while 9-10 years ago, and although I don’t like it as much as I used to, it definitely was the start of my love for mysteries and horror set in the Victorian era. Since I’m actually watching Doctor Who in chronological order, I actually feel sad when the Doctor regenerates. I’ll be on to series 8 soon enough, and I’ve only seen a few episodes from that and series 9, so it’s exciting to watch Doctor Who that feels new to me. I’m currently geeking out over the Paternoster Gang, and wishing that they got a TV spinoff instead of UNIT and the Sea Devils, but there are the audios, and a spinoff is a spinoff, regardless of the medium.

‘The Enemy of the World’ is so good!

I should be starting ‘The Sensorites’ this week in my rewatch.

Finally finished Enemy. It definitely picked up in the last two parts, but it is kind of a shame how encumbered the serial felt on the whole. Gonna give it a tentative 3.5 stars that may or may not slide upwards on rewatch.

I have now seen exactly half (well, 52%) of 2’s stories, and I think I can put together my general thoughts on his era. And honestly? It’s on the lower rung of the classic who for me - thus far at least. Troughton is obviously a gem and dominates every time he’s on screen, but I have to say that Ben, Polly, and Victoria leave something to be desired. I can see why Jamie and Zoe seem to be considered 2’s most popular team, kinda like 4 and Sarah and 7 and Ace.

My other issues come from A. the length of a lot of his stories and B. the repetitive format. The base under siege is certainly a classic but there’s such thing as overdoing it. And I know I whinge about the length a lot when it comes to classic who (sue me, my rotted gen z brain cannot compute a plot longer than 160-180 minutes /j) but there were so many scenes in Enemy especially that felt like a lot of characters I struggle to keep track of standing around, expositing, and then BOOM we’re doing something else. The 60s pacing is something I have always struggled with, and it does unfortunately sometimes hamper it for me personally.

That said, there is absolutely a lot to love. As I said, Troughton is a wizard onscreen. There have definitely been highlights (Macra Terror and Tomb are PEAK) and I haven’t even hit a lot of the ones people rave about yet (Evil of the Daleks, Web of Fear, The Invasion, War Games) so I’ll keep my mind open.
