I don’t think the Rani is just a female Master, I just think the story is boring.
I agree, the Rani is significantly different to the Master.
One of my problems with this story is the Master being in it. I wish they’d allowed the Rani to be the only baddie.
this I’ll agree with, the Master was basically pointless in Mark and the Rani could have easily filled that space. Their banter is hilarious though
you have every right to that opinion of course but you are wrong! It might not be the most devastatingly original or tightly paced story, but Peri gets a good amount to do, the funny bits are hilarious, and it chugs happily along. I think it’s a great watch
I find it falls into the problem I have with basically all of S22 is that the episodes feel like 25 minutes of material they had to stretch another 20. Varos I think is perhaps the one that season that fits its time the best.
Poor Ainley was devastated lol. On another note, I find him mildly fascinating. The way his colleagues talk about him, he seemed to be enigmatic in a oddball sort of way (in one of the DVD interviews for MotR, everyone said how Ainley only ever talked about two things: cricket and the Master), and IIRC what is documented about his life outside of the show is sparse.
I finished The War Games, and with it, Classic Who.
Man.
Well you might as well watch seasons 7-26 again then.
As it happens, I did put on a bit of Spearhead from Space after finishing The War Games. That was an absolute masterclass of a finale, but now I’m crying.
Finished City of Death during supper.
This was a story I watched on transmission all those many years ago, and the one that made me ‘decide’ to become a fan, rather than just a viewer.
When you’re 13 years old, and Romana 2 turns up, an impossibly posh, elegant, funny, bossy, charming, beautiful young woman (probably), well, let’s just say you look at the world in a whole new way. I love Lalla Ward and am delighted Big Finish want to work with her again soon.
As for the story - I take the criticisms, but The Daleks are actually losing a war for the first time, so the fact they look battered makes sense. Likewise for Davros, who has just awakened from centuries in suspended animation after being exterminated. Poor old bugger.
Considering this was the first Dalek story for five years, Destiny suffered from none of the problems that cast a shadow over Day of the Daleks which saw the Skarosians return after a similar delay: the voices were spot-on, and they moved around at lightening speed. Plus - loads of location filming (the low industrial ‘groan’ sound effect on Skaro really spooked me, as it did others who watched), lots of (admittedly sometimes unenthusiastic) exterminations and some cracking cliffhangers.
I loved it then. I love it now!
Same here, for reasons that have already been shared! One tiny thing - I think Colin’s Coat, which has received a lot of understandable stick over the years, looks great on the filmed locations. The weather was suitably heavy and cloudy and the schedule was frequently interrupted by rain; in these darkened, autumnal forests, the splash of colour that was The Sixth Doctor is a great visual contrast, acting like a flame in the darkness. It’s one of the few times the costume has really worked.
I need to watch Mark of the Rani, it was the very first classic who DVD I got and to this day I have never watched it. I started it when I first got the DVD but fell asleep during it (I was like, 11)
Well I did just rewatch City of Death. I get it now. Or well, get it more. It vibed better with me so I have bumped it up to a 9/10.
But I still don’t think it’s the best 4 story and I think that it is a bit overrated. For me, out of the Tom Baker stories I have watched the top 3 are Genesis, Brain of Morbius, and then this one (or maybe Pyramids of Mars).
‘Green Death’ day for me. Great serial, but boy did I regret choosing to eat a bowl of cereal while watching it. The maggots were absolutely disgusting.
I’m glad I saved this meme when I first saw it, because it’s so accurate
Bottom line is: Jo Grant, I love you so so so much.
Unleashed for The Robot Revolution.
Rewatched the Girl who died and the Woman who lived last night. I didn’t remember much from those episode except for the Ashildr/Me thing.
I rather enjoyed part one but was bored during part 2. Also, a rather long scene has barely any light (when they’re stealing the amulet thing) and it wasn’t helping me to stay focused.
Also, while I sympathise with Ashildr’s situation, the character annoys me.
Watching “Thunderbirds: The Man From MI5”
38 minutes in… When does the Doctor Who connection come here?
Best thing so far is that I finally get why Donna says “Thank you Parker” to the 14th Doctor in Wild Blue Yonder
I did not make that connection!!!
You’ve already seen it…
Who’s your favourite character?
What did I miss???
