Yeah, really wish I’d watched that one as my first Zoe serial instead of my last!

Watching Under the Lake/Before the Flood, the ghost design in truly haunting, it’s impressive how with a little bit of face paint they’ve managed to make the ghosts so terrifying. A spectacular two parter

To be fair, the lack of eyes also helps

Peter Capaldi’s dedication to his craft is truly inspiring, the fact that he was willing to remove his eyes just to sell the ghost effect, master class :star_struck: /j

The Edge of Destruction
The Rescue (Watched yesterday)
The Sontaran Experiment
Black Orchid
The King’s Demons
The Awakening
(The Ultimate Foe)

It turns out that I’ve already seen most of the two-parters. I suppose I’ll try and knock out the Fifth Doctor ones then.

Got a bunch of new DVDs today (won them via auction a while back). Decided to watch The Curse of Peladon.

This was a delightful little watch. I liked the political intrigue, the interactions between King Peladon and Hepesh as well as the stuff between the delegates. Jo is also very smart and capable, I loved the scenes of her finding out things before the Doctor as well as getting out of situations on her own like escaping that one room by shimmy-ing along the outside wall. The setting was really cool too: a dark castle on top of a mountain. Also, the Ice Warrior characters, mainly Izlyr, I really liked. They established the Ice Warriors as not purely evil and the Doctor is actually in the wrong by being prejudiced in the earlier parts of the story. Izlyr was properly diplomatic and I loved the bit where he said he didn’t suspect the Doctor anymore because he saved his life. A lovely little detail that touches on the Ice Warriors’ sense of honour, as well as again showing that non-humans aren’t inherently evil. Also, the twist with Arcturus was clever.

There are some negatives though. The whole aspect of Aggedor feels a little underutilized, I wish Peladon (the King) was a little more active (I mean in the battle between Hepesh’ guards and the loyalist guards he just kinda stands there…), Alpha Centauri’s voice could get pretty grating at points and the issue of the TARDIS being lost is resolved with no real input from the main characters. Also, while the Arcturus twist was cool, his species being old enemies of the Ice Warriors as well as his own concerns which made him work with Hepesh… comes out of nowhere, explained AFTER he was killed. There should have been hints earlier.

As an example, Arcturus could have lines of dialogue earlier about his planet’s mineral deposits (even if it is kind of hinted at as Hepesh talks about the Federation stripping the minerals of Peladon should they join) and he could have talked to the Ice Warriors and said something like “It is good our kinds can engage in diplomacy rather than war.”

Overall though, I really quite enjoyed this one, solid 8/10.

I watched a bit of that one. It was fine, but I kinda got tired of TWD just as a whole, I think somewhere in the main show’s 9th season or so.

All this Rani talk put me in a Mark of the Rani mood. Am I biased because I’m a train fan so I think having George Stephenson in an episode is fun? Yes. I also enjoy that we actually manage to be in the North East in this one which DW hardly ever does. Also the Rani. Screw you guys I like this one a lot

Started The Hand of Fear during my lunch break! surprised I’ve never seen this other than the farewell scene at the end (which I’ve watched multiple times)

Every time I watch Mark I’m worried that I’m suddenly going to realise why everyone hates it. Just liked it more this time. People who say the Rani is just the Master but a woman is wrong - he is utterly focussed on universal domination and defeating the Doctor. The Rani says it herself - she already runs a planet, why should she care about taking Earth too? Sure, the people are disposable to her and she teams up with the Master because he’s useful, but she isn’t seeking chaos and dominion in the same way as him. She’s literally just trying to grow her dinosaurs and do her unethical science in peace :smiling_face_with_tear:
