I hate people release unfinished stories.

Kate Orman bursts onto the scene with a stylish, inventive and wholly unique story that moves at an often too fast break-neck speed.

A fantastic antagonist and some truly wonderful prose make this an utter highlight of the early VNAs, but it is sometimes painfully obvious that it is a debut novel.

So I finished Love & War recently and… It was alright. Solid 7/10. I like Benny, I want more of her. The Doctor was acting super strange throughout this one though. And I had trouble connecting to the romance between Ace and Jan. I will say, I did enjoy the ending. Love how the owls start the story and end it. In a sort of typical DW fashion, how did I not guess that the way the Hoothi were going to be defeated was by fire/explosion?! There was a great hopelessness right up until the end that I did enjoy. The Hoothi were an excellent antagonist. I think this one was just right in length. But it also didn’t wow me. I am looking forward to reading more in the range again though!

We do have a Books > Book Club for this one:

Read The Benton File IV. Unlike other 2-story books in this series, the stories in this one are distinctly linked. Probably wouldn’t want that every time, but I liked it here. Nice light little nibble between novels.

Finished reading Venusian Lullaby, love it! Been loving the first Doctor VMA Books so far!

Honestly, it was a delight getting an Adventure just with Ian and Barbara as well!

Nearly at the end of The Mary-Sue Extrusion and Jason Kane has turned up (which blows theory #1 out of the water). 200 pages before a regular character from the series has appeared. God help me - I’m going to finish this tonight!

Part way through City at Worlds End at the moment, I’m a big fan of the ideas and what the story’s trying to achieve, but I’m not so sure about the world building or use of exposition so far…
I remain hopeful however

The target novel for 73 Yards. And I just happened to read the first 73 pages in one sitting.

Reading a sixie adventure in which I keep dying and dying and the life lesson the author want to teach me is a bit confusing

I’m reading a book where the choices I make, for some reason, end up killing @AlfieSigma over and over, and the life lessons the author tries to teach them are very confusing.

I am taking forever to get through “The Ruby’s Curse”, about 2/3 of the way.

The story is okay I guess, but it’s just not very well written? I have never seen a book with that many redundant sentences in parentheses, the sheer amount of them is really jarring and kills the pace of the novel. I suddenly remember why I wasn’t that enamoured with this book when I read it near it’s release.

And it feels like they work too hard to fit every single thing known about River into the narrative in some way.

The Captain Jack cameo felt really unnecessary and a bit too much of a cheat to get River out of a sticky situation.

Still can’t remember where the Thirteenth Doctor appears…

I agree and still I prefer it to the Mel book that came out last year.
