What are you currently reading?

I sent you the reading order I’m doing didn’t I?

Also Mistborn era 1 was so so good!!!

Yeah, you did! I forgot about that! But I found it earlier in the thread, and I’ll move on to Elantris next, once I’ve read a couple of Who books!

The Stormlight Archive was the best cycle I’ve read by Sanderson. Hope that final book will come soon

I’ve heard great things about those books, so I’m excited to finally read them. I understood the next one should be out this winter.

Finished Decalog 4! The final story I thought was a bit too much of a downer ending to act as a sequel to So Vile a Sin, but it did feel pretty in keeping with the previous stories in the volume… let’s just say that they’re almost entirely composed of dark endings. However, I do think this is probably the most consistent Decalog in quality! All the stories are engaging in a way that not every story in past anthologies have managed.

I would probably rank them thus:

  1. Shopping for Eternity (by Gus Smith)
  2. Rescue Mission (by Paul Leonard)
  3. C9H13NO3 (by Peter Anghelides)
  4. Burning Bright (by Liz Holliday)
  5. Secrets of the Black Planet (by Lance Parkin)
  6. Heritage (by Ben Jeapes)
  7. Approximate Time of Death (by Richard Salter)
  8. No One Goes to Halfway There (by Kate Orman)
  9. Second Chances (by Alex Stewart)
  10. Dependence Day (by Andy Lane & Justin Richards

One other thing I quite like about Decalog 4 is that it provides a sort of generally applicable timeline of the early phases of human expansion into space in the DWU

Decalog 4 is more Doctor Who than Decalog 5. At least its related to Roz.

I started on In Wonderland, my first Puffin Classics crossover. It slots nicely into the Season 20/21 vibes and mixes Alice in Wonderland with Doctor Who pretty well.

I don’t know if a beach is the best place to read that book (although it looks nice and warm!). Perhaps a junkyard or a cave somewhere?

It was a nice way to read it. But to be fair it would have been nice to read the back of a milk carton on the beach :joy:

Some stress in life right now so rereading Alien Bodies. It’s next in my EDA reading and is also one of my favourite Who novels ever. Even just the opening prologue, just 5 pages, is a beautiful little story. Lawrence Miles is considered one of the best book writers for very good reasons.

Oooo I just got my copy of Alien Bodies in!!

I am finally trying to read Love and War though. Finished the prelude and part of Chapter 1.

I’ve taken a good break from the VNAs. Nightshade was the last I read. I completely skipped the Cat’s Cradle trilogy because I didn’t want another series of (seemingly) half-connected books like Timewyrm.

And this is the intro to Bernice, who I’ve been very much wanting to meet! Looking forward to reading more of this one.

Oh, and my EDA people out there, do I need to read Vampire Science before Alien Bodies? I’ve been told I could skip the Eight Doctors.

I wanna read Vampire Science, but I’d much prefer a physical copy to the PDF version I have. I now own Alien Bodies physically. So just wondering if there’s context I need from Vampire Science or can I jump straight in?

No, you don’t—at least not that I can recall. I can’t remember any significant details that carry over.

(Although you should read Vampire Science at some point because it’s really good!)

No, you could start with Alien Bodies. That or War of the Daleks were the first EDAs I read back in 2017, but going through them now in order it’s enjoyable seeing references to previous stories in each successive novel.
Vampire Science is the best of the pre-Alien Bodies though and is very much worth reading.
The Eight Doctors is 100% skippable, not a good book at all.

Like others have said, you really don’t need to read any of the books before Alien Bodies and I really suggest you just dive right into it because honestly, none of the others are worth reading.

Vampire Science is alright, but I still only give it a 7/10.

Alien Bodies however, Alien Bodies is something else.

Have fun as I’m sure you will.

If you wanna read Vampire Science, you could read the first and last chapters of The Eight Doctors to know how Sam came aboard. Nothing else is needed.

My unpopular opinion is that I didn’t hate The Eight Doctors. It’s not fine prose by any stretch of the imagination but it was kind of fun to whiz through. And I am a vampire lover so I loved Vampire Science, but as far as I remember, Alien Bodies should make enough sense by itself.
