Wow, thanks!
You write very engaging prose
Thank you, thank you, I do try!
I’m surprised you read it considering it’s a ship fic!
It was your featured topic, thought I’d check it out
Ooh, more things to read!
Just finished quite a solid book I must say I’m now I think finished with the first doctor vmas
I might drive myself mad, i might read House of Leaves
Just finished rereading the Dalek novelisation and my thoughts have remained unchanged: incredible prose that’s hurt by being a kinda standard adaptation filled with multiple (well-written!) short story backstories that don’t actually inform the overall narrative and just feel like Shearman wanted to write something different. 9 and Rose get sidelined and barely feel important, let alone the main characters due to how long these backstory sections can be and it’s just distracting and frustrating. Shame because the book itself is a good read, I just think it’s not a great adaptation because it bloats the original instead of enhancing it. 2.5/5
Will say the Dalek backstory was absolutely stellar though
I’m 50 pages into SIGNET: Unstoppable by John Peel.
Really strong beginning, it sets up a great and creepy mystery And the prose just flows, you can really tell that it’s an experienced writer at work here
I’m not currently reading anything DW-related, but I am searching for quotes to submit. I love this one, but I don’t think it fits the guideline of being interesting for a broad audience so I’ll just post it here. I love myself some domestic Six (@NyssaTheNerd, sorry it isn’t domestic Peri haha).
The Doctor was in the kitchen. He was wearing a white apron which barely covered his ample form. He was frying bacon over a gas ring.
‘Good morning,’ he said cheerily. ‘Some mod cons at least.’
‘That smells terrific,’ Peri said, seating herself at the kitchen table. ‘Where are our hosts?’
‘Trefoil is sorting out his cellar, and Liz went to the farm for milk. I gather there isn’t a Mrs Trefoil.’ He shuffled the bacon round the pan with a wooden spatula, letting it hiss and spit in the fat. ‘The bread’s good,’ he said without looking up. ‘Home made from local flour, of course.’
Finished Shroud of Sorrow.
Really good book but the Clown stuff just feels incredibly odd and out of place here.
At Childhoods End - only a few chapters in.. well it’s Ace
One of my favourite books ever it’s so so good
Started the first few pages of my next EDA The Scarlet Empress! Oh, and working my Way through my next ninth NSA, while dreading going back to Evolution (I am sorry but John Peel’s Writing really doesn’t do it for me, I will go back to it! Eventually.. )
Carrying on with Wooden Heart but I keep reading it close to sleepy time and just end up falling asleep. I’m really enjoying it though.
Finished Birthright. A very quick read – I did it in two sittings, but it wasn’t great. The prose is very plain and the characterisation is a bit standard. Solid 5/10!
I’ve decided that I’m gonna do Goth Opera or The Dark Path once i finish Judgement at Tokyo
I just finished Vampire Science and guys I just love Sam! I think she has so many layers, I was more interested in her relationship with the Doctor than in the overall story haha, I also liked the supporting cast of the story, Carolyn has great moments, the villains are kind of whatever to me over time, I really liked the vampires in the beginning but I started to find it a bit repetitive over time all the meetings the Doctor had with them to reach an agreement. Anyway, another really cool story, one day I’ll come back to read other adventures of the Eighth Doctor.
Another Life is certainly taking its time to get going. But there’s a tonal shift in one of thee chapters that came out of nowhere and oh my good, I was so shocked lol
Also made a start on Night of the Humans.
I just finished this one:
All caught up with SIGNET, hoping for much more
Really good character work on the main team by John Peel - Aoife really got put through the wringer emotionally. The plot itself was a tad simplistic at points, but it’s the emotional beats that is this book’s strength.
The little interludes were fantastic! Usually I find such to be a bit too disruptive for the pacing of a story, but they added a lot of atmosphere to the narrative.
4/5 from me.
