I started a brand new save in Mario Odyssey tonight and played through the first couple of kingdoms. It is such a good game. I still don’t understand why they never made DLC for it.

Let’s hope we get a new 3D Mario in the Switch 2 Direct!

I’ve just started playing Funko Fusion. It’s like a more mature version of the LEGO games, but with Funko Pops. I’ve started with the Hot Fuzz levels, which is a ton of fun.

I never thought I’d live in a future where Hot Fuzz is a part of a video game, but I’m so glad the Cornetto Trilogy has developed enough of a following to be included in things like this. Those films are hilarious.

Genuinely it’s insane

Very glad there’s such a vibrant modding scene though

Mario Odyssey is just such a good game, I bought it twice! I really appreciate how Nintendo designed it making it very accessible to players of all skill levels, but added a lot of hidden depth to the movement, one you start learning some of the major tricks in the game opens up massively.

(Also Nintendo please add multiplayer to Odyssey 2 so people don’t have to mod it in k thx)

I’m loving Doom³ so far!
Even if I’m getting killed every five minutes or so :sob:

I guess still Metroid Prime randos to somewhat stay in this thread’s topic, but I’m using this thread to elaborate on what I said in the Switch 2 thread.

@shauny I stand by Classic Doom (Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, Doom 64, and the community WADs (not mods like Brutal Doom)) as the greatest shooter of all time, but it stays below Metroid as a game franchise because of Doom 3 and Eternal, neither of which I’m a fan of, where Metroid only has a single bad one we don’t talk about. I find both more fun and replayable than Half Life, Doom because of the infinity of maps and things out there, and Metroid because of randomizers. Half-Life gets a replay from me once in a while, but it’s always the same, only one way to go, and while it’s a masterpiece in its type of game, the continuous shooter with the “cutscenes” as part of the gameplay and its approach to storytelling, I gravitate more towards the gameplay of the others.

I get that!

I just have huge nostalgia for Half-Life as it came out when I was about 13 and I had all the hype before it, it was my first big game, I played it with my Dad (one of the only things we did together) and then played Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, loads of mods and fan-made maps, and then I remember the hype for HL2, and the Episodes, then the vaporware that was HL3 (still have hope about the recent ‘leaks’).

So yeah, Half-Life is a big part of my life!

I’ve only played the really old Dooms and one more ‘modern’ one about 10 years ago that I didn’t like, can’t remember which. I’ve never owned a Metroid game, just seen videos of it. So I can’t really comment on those.

That other Doom would have probably been Doom 3, likely BFG Edition (not as good as release Doom 3). And I guess, now that I think of it, Doom (2016) was nearly 10 years ago already, so maybe it could have been that.

I’m too young to have the nostalgia factor with Half Life, I only got into it within the last 7-10 years. So that’s also part of it, I only understand how revolutionary it was in the historical context, rather than first-hand. Doom II was probably my first actual video game though (quite a few years after it came out), so likely left a strong impression on me, if we’re talking nostalgia. Prime 3: Corruption was my first Metroid, since that’s somewhat relevant.

I’ve played a bit of Half Life 1 + 2. And also some of Black Mesa. Black Mesa’s a pretty good remake.

Also, I’ve played Portal 1 + 2. Probably more of those two then the above…

Started yet another run of Powerwash Simulator, think this is like my 6th time maybe replaying the game on a new save :sob:

Oh boy, in terms of what the greatest FPS franchise is, while it’s not one of my favourites I do have to give it to Doom on technical merit alone, the idea of verticality in an FPS was nothing more than a fever dream until the wizards of Id actually went and dreamt it up. Another aspect of Doom I greatly appreciate is how it handled “recordings”, naturally one would not simply be able to record themselves beating a level and then send it off to others easily due to this annoying thing known as dial-up, Doom got around that by only recording a user’s button inputs, so instead of having to send a video file over dial-up, all you had to send was a list of inputs and what frame they happened on. This kickstarted speed running for Doom and made it one of the most accessible speed games of the time.

While I yapped about Doom, I wouldn’t say it’s solely responsible for the FPS genre of today, as mentioned by others Half Life established that you can use the FPS genre as a vehicle to tell a compelling story, and while things like the interactivity or the gravity gun of HL2 might be novelties today, back in the day having the ability to pick up and move random objects in the world just because was wild. Bonus points for Half Life Alyx for making one of the best and most terrifying VR games on the market, it’s a must-play if you own a VR headset.

Quick mention to Marathon for popularising mouse look for aiming, and Halo for standardising how an FPS should control on a controller

I’m doing a Platinum nuzlocke. Casual, not hardcore, but I count deaths in grinding. Five dead so far, two of them training and three battling. A few close calls, but fine so far. Next gym is Crash Waker. The only gym with casualties so far was Fantina, who killed my Roselia and almost got my entire team with it.

Now I’m grinding my Pokemon to level 36, Crasher level cap is 37 and I always leave some room for eventual level up in the gym itself. Kinda worried about this one because the only Pokemon I have that is a good counter to water is Luxray, although I do have a Gardevoir with Magical Leaf so let’s see how that goes.

I’m playing with more than 6 pokemon. Empoleon, Gyarados, Gastrodon, Staraptor, Crobat, Gardevoir, Luxray and Bronzong all are active members. I’ll be training Medidite, Psyduck and Porygon. Chansey and Girafarig are backups for now and I’ll be hatching Togepi only if I loose one of my current flying types and I’ll let Eevee rest in the box until E4 in case I need an eeveelution to fill a specific roll. Obvious weekness to Electric types there, not sure Gastrodon will handle everything itself.

Not so sure about training trade evolutions (got Geodude, Abra, Rhyhorn and Ghastly). Maybe that Abra if my Gardevoir dies.

I prob should have locked a Geodude before Mt Coronet cause I was looking forward to using a Probopass again since it was a huge surprise last time I did a Platinum nuzlocke, but oh well.

Things I started up today, in my quest to start up games in my library that I supposedly haven’t played:
Red Dead Redemption 2:
positives: had horses
negatives: made me register an account and wouldn’t accept my other internet username, does silly launcher nonsense in steam.

Arcanum: Played the tutorial. It’s a card battler.

Dungeon Hearts: Whole screen is halfway off the first monitor when you have two monitors. Not worth trying to play.

Gyromancer: Feels old. Match 3 creature battler.

Faerie Solitaire Dire: So dire it wouldn’t start. Shame, that’s a fun solitaire series of games.

Children of Zodiarcs: Seemed fun?

198x: Seems to be a game where you are playing a bunch of retro style arcade games in sequence, switching to a new one when you beat one. So I beat a one stage beat em up, had a cut scene, and went to a side scrolling space game that I failed to beat. Rather fun.

And my controller needs to be charged, so hopefully it’s currently doing that.

Ordered myself a USB GameCube controller adapter. Can play my Prime/Echoes randomizers on an actual GameCube controller instead of dealing with the input lag of the Bluetooth connected Wii classic controller. Also a lot easier to not press the R and L buttons all the way down to the click on the GC controller, which some speedrunning tricks require.

I’ve been playing Ark: Survival Evolved for a while now, but my enthusiasm is starting to wane. So I’ll probably start some other game soon.
