Ooh maybe new badge incoming?

I have started and I think that it is okay. Not the best set in the world (Rory is better with Amy) but a bit of fun
The audios, particularly the Early Adventures focus quite a bit on the fact that Polly and Ben grew up during the war and the period after it - Resistance, The Night Witches, The Home Front, The Forsaken, the Short Trip, Lost and Found.
Don’t recall that at all, but I guess I’ll be reminded a little bit when I eventually get into The Early Adventures. Of course, as they didn’t start till 2014 and I’m still back at 2009, I’ll probably forget again by the time I get there!
I read that as Rory is better than Amy
Which is indeed also the case …
The Face in the Storm (the second-to-last story of FDA Series 13). Gave up on the Silmarillion, I was loosing interest as it was rather meandering and there were too many names to keep track of.
Silmarillion isn’t the lightest of books to read/listen to. I first read it (in Swedish) when I was 11 and haven’t touched it since, so I absolutely feel your struggle
With so many other things to listen to, I was definitely loosing interest. It’s not a terrible book, but it is dense and isn’t the masterpiece that is LotR or lighthearted fun of the Hobbit. It is fascinating, but it was wandering to much to hold my interest between long breaks.
I think the books that have come out the last few years like “Beren and Lùthien” or “The Fall of Númenor”, that expands those tales from the Silmarillion and makes them a bit more “easy” to read are quite good if you find the time for them🙂
I’ve read the Silmarillion once, don’t think I will ever do it again if I am being perfectly honest.
Listened to Light the Flame and holy crap you weren’t all kidding about Jonathan Carley! Genuinely shocking it wasn’t Hurt.
So excited to hear more, great story with an outstanding lead performance!
Yeah, there’s also The Children of Hurin which had an audiobook read by Christopher Lee.
The Children of Húrin is my favourite Tolkien book! It’s so gripping and tragic!
It probably helps that it is inspired by the Tragedy of Kullervo, which is part of our national epic Kalevala, which Tolkien was a fan of. So it feels very Finnish in tone, which resonates with me
I have that one as a physical book. But read by Christopher Lee? Scaramanga himself? The Man with the Golden Gun??
Darth Tyrannus? The guy from The House that Dripped Blood co-starring with one Peter Cushing?
(And Saruman I suppose?)
And available on my book streaming service?
Just finished Excelis Decays. Possibly a Hadoke Happy Times and Places next. He’s recently done Let’s Kill Hitler and The Unquiet Dead which should be fascinating listens.
I confess I felt the same way until very recently myself. Returning to some of the 8 and Charley audios I had taken to and The Stuff of Legend (unfortunately not live) really gave me a fresh perspective. Even though I’ve already worked out how to budget my BF spending next year, I kind of want to jump on the current 8DA run with her, which would also nececcitate backdating a couple sets which is a bit expensive. If anyone can vouch for In The Bleak Midwinter especially, now’s the time.
I quite enjoyed it. A nice Christmas themed set of stories.
Definitely a fan of The Bleak Midwinter! Fun set.
Finished The Face in the Storm yesterday and then started 1634: The Galileo Affair.
Been listening to Daughter of the Gods and this very well may be a Top 10 ever story for me. What could have been a very “throw the action figures together” story is actually a really small scale (which is weird to say regarding a plot that involves time changing and the Daleks basically winning The Dalek Masterplan) thoughtful exploration of One and Two, what makes the Doctor the Doctor, the importance of “small” people, and just an wonderful piece examining the show’s core ethos, which I think is also perfectly explained in Peter Capaldi’s final speech with “Hate is always foolish, love is always wise. Always try to be nice but never fail to be kind… Laugh hard, run fast, be kind.”
Digging in to the Doctor Who at the BBC releases I haven’t heard before (i.e., most of them). Volume 1 is rubbish! The Nicholas Courtney special on disc 1 was probably worthwhile at the time, but by now (and probably by the time of the CD) it just repeats stuff that’s been said better elsewhere.
Volume 2 so far is much better. Dead Ringers is so cringe though.
