Can I just say how much I admire that you’re listening to big finish audios whilst updating reviews of other big finish audios so you can listen to more big finish audios
Now THAT is dedication to the grind

Others would call it “not having a social life”.
Though both are true in my case
I’d argue it’s one of the best boxsets to ever come out of Big Finish, especially Peach Blossom Heights. It’s refreshing to see such a weird and wonderful concept in the Whoniverse that no one can pull off except for Captain John, and I’m glad that they made his Deadpool-espue characterisation work in Dark Gallifrey
Isn’t it fantastic! Just extraordinary work from Jacobi and each story extremely strong, yet different, too. Joyously dark!
DEATHWORLD
Episodes 1 and 2
So, finally got around to listening to this. Truth is, I’m having a blast so far. It’s not what I expected, but I’m really loving it. I wasn’t initially sure with episode 1, but it grew on me as it developed. At the end of the episode, I was definitely intrigued.
Episode 2, however… just fantastic! Without giving away any spoilers for those who haven’t listened yet, one HUGE improvement over “The Three Doctors” to my mind is in the characterisation of the First and Second Doctors. It has always bothered me that these two wonderful incarnations were very much caricatures of the originals (to their detriment). Moreover, there were such limitations imposed upon Hartnell’s participation that the First Doctor’s involvement was peripheral to say the least.
Here, in “Deathworld” we get full blooded characterisations that seem much more in keeping and allow each Doctor to carry their part of the story. They are a delight! I’m particularly enjoying the First Doctor’s pairing with the Brigadier. It seems absolutely right and proper that the Doctor addresses the Brig as Alastair. I’m also really feeling the warmth of the Third Doctor in Treloar’s portrayal. Of course, Michael Troughton is utterly delightful as the Second Doctor we all know and love. Scriptwise, I see the hand of John Dorney very much in these much more vivid and truthful characterisations. So good!
Plotwise, it’s barmy, but in a good way. I kind if expected “The Three Doctors” with Death in Omega’s role (not quite as simple as that but that’s the gist of it). Instead, we get something very different. To find that the Doctors face not just Death, but War, Famine and Pestilence as well is a fascinating development. It’s certainly in episode 2 where things take a turn for the sinister.
Episode 3 tonight. I’m very much looking forward to it!
I finished …ish yesterday.
In my opinion this one is amazing.
The setting alone is great and the story itself is a lot of fun.
I couldn’t agree more about Deathworld! It’s a delightful alternative take on The Three Doctors.
If you enjoyed the first half you will enjoy the second half as well! More dangers and traps are waiting for the Doctors!
Aaah, this is the one that many people don’t like. I listened to it a couple of years ago and remember liking it - it’s pretty clever and it can be frustrating to get into, but it’s very suitable for Colin’s Doctor!
Like I said before I loved it. But I must say someone should have probably filmed my reaction when I realized that it is set at a linguistics (or something similar) conference, when I started it to procrastinate writing my linguistics paper.
Ok, you got me interested. Linguistics rocks!
Btw, what’s your paper about?
The task we were set for it was writing a research paper about modal verbs and their uses in a non-standard variety of English (Specifically ESL (English as Second Language)). (Because those don’t have as many sources) I chose Hong Kong English because I thought it sounded a bit more interesting than the other options we were given. I’m currently still working through analyzing the word list so I haven’t really decided on a specific topic yet (haven’t actually seen any phenomena or anything yet but I am not too far in it).
Nope. I was wrong. Sins of the Flesh is too emotional for me to do this.
I love …ish !
But then again I also have a linguistic university education
Yeah, sorry - count me in the ‘don’t like …ish’ brigade. Bit too clever clever for my liking but I have only ever listened to it once so I might find I like it a bit more next time round.
I love …ish! I can’t pretend it all makes sense to me but that’s no problem, in fact, I like a story premise written by someone evidently more worldly-wise (or perhaps that should be wordly-wise) than me. A good, eccentric tale - the kind of thing I would like to hear more of from BF.
I’m currently listening to Susan’s War 2 - The Golden Child. This story is my favourite of the two. The inclusion of an older War Doctor (another great performance from Jonathan Carley, with little tweaks here and there to communicate his increasing age and weariness) and his interaction with Susan is a definite high point. Such is her effervescence and energy, it’s ridiculous to think that Carole-Ann is in her '80s!
Count me among the fans of “Ish”. A long time since I last heard it, but I enjoyed it very much.
Then again, I have a love of words. Couple that with Colin’s Doctor (also one for the joy of language) and you have a great combination.
I think, so far at least, this story benefits hugely from being made on audio today as opposed to on TV in 1973. Though I feel it might well have been easier to realise hospitals, victims of aggressive fungal infections and a range of mismatched soldiers from history on an early 70s budget, there are other sequences that would have suffered from the same limitations as Omega’s realm in '73 but are limitless in scope in our imaginations!
Thanks for your comments re: the second half. Sounds like I’m in for two more cracking good episodes.
It’s weird because I love teaching about words at school but I just remember …ish not impressing me.
Listening to Toby Hadoke’s latest Too Much Information about The Snows of Terror - as fascinating as always. Not sure I knew Carole Ann Ford injured herself falling from the rope bridge.
I completely agree. I’ve actually just finished updating my old reviews of the set from the other site.
Even though they all carry a disclaimer, I had had to edit so much out of my reviews because of how raunchy the series is. I mean, ‘Peach Blossom Heights’ especially - though it is the best of the set.
I would absolutely LOVE a return to the Articulate Worlds. Such a fascinating backdrop.
Honestly, it’s my head-canon that the …ish is actually a distant cousin of the I - from ‘Iterations of I’.
Because what is mathematics if not another form of language?
