PLANET KRYNOID: Sunset

This is genuinely wonderful stuff. Part two really escalates and is everything I have hoped for in a Krynoid story. It’s thrilling stuff, full of possession, tentacles, characterisation and a genuinely engaging setting.

One thing I really appreciate is the way that the story plays with class AND ccorporate greed. These two separate threads pull in different directions, generating a palpable tension with ordinary people caught between three monstrous threats; the entitlement and privilege of the wealthy elite, the voracious nature of the corporate machine that is only interested in profit and, of course, the insatiable hunger of the Krynoids.

There are parallels with the Company from The Sun Makers (the Company be praised) in Chemovox. Moreover, shades of Musk’s dream of a Mars colonised by workers who are financially beholden to Musk via loans they would likely never be able to repay. This is a future of indentured servitude to a faceless capitalist monster that is incapable of seeing humanity in thenpeople that it uses to achieve its ends.

The Doctor gets plenty to do, also, although he doesn’t dominate proceedings. McGann is, of course, outstanding. He effortlessly sells how dire the situation is, whilst projecting warmth, calm and enthusiasm. He has his own agenda in this story, which gradually becomes apparent. McGann is always superb in the role, but this is a particular high point for me.

Two episodes in and I can see this episode so well in my mind. This is always key for me with an audio. Planet Krynoid balances compelling storytelling with enough aural texture to really help me to visualise.

Yes, loving this. Darkness still to go. I’m ready. Bring it on!

Finally Toby Hadoke’s Too Much Information podcast about episode 6 of The Keys of Marinus (confusingly titled, The Keys of Marinus) has dropped on free platforms. It seems it went to patrons back in February which is about the time my patronship ended as he’s just been taking too long to do the TMIs. I may resubscribe if and when he does Far Too Much Informations for Marco Polo and Marinus but I don’t see that happening for a while.

I listened to The Eleven Day Empire and wrote a review.

I liked it very much, and now I’m a little bit sad that I’ll probably never be able to read or listen to all the Faction Paradox material. I mean, Faction Paradox: The Book of the War currently goes for 300 euros or more—give me a break!

Halfway through Redacted series 2 and it’s pretty good but it really is the most “pretty good” thing I’ve ever heard. Assuming the character in the 3rd episode cliffhanger isn’t lying, I saw that twist coming lol

Finally got over my grief over Lucie and listened to Dark Eyes 1. I’ve heard people say Dark Eyes wasn’t very good, but I really liked it!

Continuing my Gallifrey listen with S3.3 Appropriation.

It takes a very particular type of person to enjoy what was basically 1 hour 20 mins of squabbling over the constitutionality of Gallifreyan political manoeuvres.

Thankfully I am that person. I really enjoyed this. Its great! Darkel returning to her position as the main antagonist is very welcome. She’s such a great villian.

Whilst im less invested in Matthias’ plotlines, I’m a fan of Narvin in this. He’s definitely becoming more likeable with every appearance.

I’m very excited to see where this story goes next!

What you needed to do was be born around the same time as me and then you could have bought everything at cover price. Honestly, you young people never want to just take the easy option do you…

Honestly, old people sometimes. Blaming the young people for their mistakes, when they should blame their parents

In all seriousness I wish I’d invested at the time. I still don’t think novel form is how I like my Doctor Who stories (depends on the story, of course, I have enjoyed several) but if I’d followed the Seventh and Eighth Doctors through the 90s in book form (I’d have probably had to go back to the VNAs in the late 90s as I was a bit young for them when they started) then I wouldn’t be looking at potentially thousands of pounds for the chance to dip my toe 30 years in the future.

Ah well…
