Finished 2 Clement. It was… interesting. As a historical artifact, it’s definitely interesting. There were quotes from various sources, including non-canonical works that would have been circulating at the time. It was only a half-hour and would’ve been a little shorter if the chapter headings had been left out. The narrator[1] was decent enough and was at least listenable. For a short narration of a historical artifact, it was rather quite enjoyable.
I don’t think any of librivox’s narrators are professionals ↩︎
We had a poll about this a little bit ago and I’m pretty sure the ‘change the character to unspecified doctor’ option won, but it hasn’t been changed on the guide yet.
Finished The Legend of Baba Yaga which I thought was really good, Jo Martin continues to shine and I really like how the Fugitive Doctor was used here.
Half way through Self-Help and I am enjoying it. Sacha Dhawan has a lovely voice.
The 4DA The Justice of Jalxar today. It’s got Jago and Litefoot who are really very good. I love the way the Romana and Four dynamic is done here, they have some excellent moments
Listened to Bernice Summerfield and the Draconian Rage this afternoon. It was quite good, if a bit brutal in places[1]. Rather like that it tied into/is a sequel to The Dark Flame (MR #42).
Listened to intervention earth last night, loads of fun. Should have had MORE stephen thorne if you ask me, but other than that- great time. and my first official run-in w dear Ace!
Finished Ravenous 2 with “Seizure”.
A 3,5/5 from me.
Finally the Ravenous appears! Halfway through the stories under that overall title.
I think Ravenous 2 was a big step up from the first set. The story set on Kaldor wad just a really good Doctor Who story and the middle two-parter is one of the best Christmas stories out there. Seizure was quite action based with a lot of running - I feel like that is a story that would have benefitted from a visual element.
I found Ravenous as a whole far less consistent than Doom Coalition. They did say they were trying something a bit less serialised than that one but it ended up too choppy for me.
The Christmas two-parter is one of the best Doctor Who stories ever in any medium but there’s also some weeds to wade through in Ravenous as well.
Doesn’t help that the Ravenous themselves don’t do much for me. Hope you enjoy the rest of the run, the finale is really quite fun.
Helen spending 30+ years learning to fly the TARDIS in order to save Liv, the Doctor and indeed the world only to die of old age in Liv’s arms was such a good hero moment with emotional gutpunch added. And Nicola Walker’s acting when wishing Helen back to life was quite simply superb!
Finished Self-Help and thought it was really good! A lovely starting story for this incarnation of the Master and exploration of his character of who he is now and in relation to who he has been before. I think it forms a really good link between The Doctor Falls and Spyfall.
The Masters interactions with the rest of the crew was great, trying to guess how Silla killed her husband was fun and typical Master behaviour.
Settling on this being the chaotic incarnation is an apt summary and Dhawan plays this incarnation so well, I find this Masters insanity and randomness more enjoyable than Gomez or Simms versions
