Website Development Diary

I’ve tweaked the numbers a little bit and am running the bulk task again.

They should all be achievable by rating every TV story, plus just a few extras. Most are completely free to do (a few minisodes and a free audio will do it).

I want them to be a fun challenge. I don’t like badges you just earn by default for rating every TV story (there are already plenty of those…)

Now I’ve got a Nice Reply badge for my comment about Nice Reply badges, so it’s 189. :stuck_out_tongue:

Let’s make it badgeception by giving you a Nice Reply badge for your comment about getting a Nice Reply badge for your comment about Nice Reply badges!

I’ve been working on Sets recently. Lots of behind-the-scenes work mostly, but I quietly launched a brand new Sets page the other day - and it’s finally ready to show off, with some small new features (and the groundwork for some big ones in the future).

The Sets page now has pages you can flick through, so it loads faster, and it has filters. More filters coming soon!

Sets keep track of how many people have completed them, how many people are tracking them, and an all-new rating. You can sort sets by any of those numbers.

Ratings aren’t just “add up all the scores of these stories and divide by a number” - that would be too easy. They instead only count ratings from people who have rated the entire set - this helps prevent popular stories skewing the rating of the whole thing.

Also I’m very aware that sometimes the rating of a set is not the sum of its parts, so I have put in place - but not yet launched - a way for you to rate an entire set yourself. Coming soon!

Rating collectables is also planned.

Plenty more - including a new design - is coming, but that will wait until the entire site gets a brand new look later this year! :tada:

Yes, the designs I’ve been working with a designer on are finalised, and I will be starting working on that when I’m back from my trip!

Some fun Set stats:

Highest Rated TV set: Torchwood: Children of Earth
Highest Rated Audio Set: The Eleventh Doctor and Valarie Lockwood
Highest Rated Book Set: Melody Malone

I noticed this earlier - it’s a fun little feature!

Some Sets weren’t showing before, they are now, and I added a search box!

I noticed I’ve been neglecting K9 fans everywhere!

:k9:

Before, if you searched for “K9”, nothing came up because there was a minimum search term length of 3. This makes our favourite metal dog sad :frowning:

So I’ve changed the limit! K9 fans rejoice!

It’s all right, you were just trying to protect our sanity!

Aaaand that’s our sanity gone!

Surprising, but not unexpected. It really is just a fantastic stretch of episodes.

Do we have stats for the completion rate? It would be interesting to see what sets most people complete after starting.

And see how many give up halfway through K9

And who gave up? We need to shame those people!

In general, it would be fun to see if there are some episodes where more people give up.

Ooh interesting idea. Of course we have no way of really telling if someone has abandoned it for good or just stopped tracking for whatever reason. I’ll have a think!

How about having Handles chime in with small encouragements or slightly evil guilt trips (looking at you Duolingo :eyes::owl:) if there’s something like two weeks/a month/ 3 months between logging a watch/read/listen on the things you are tracking?

  • Or Strax saying he will lob a Sontaran fragmentation grenade at you if you don’t continue.
  • Or the 12th Doctor spewing funny insults at you.
  • Or Susan or Tegan coming with sarcastic comments.

You get the gist :grin::wink:

If we do something like this, it better be opt in. I would hate that, personally.
