The way this episode fools you into suspecting you can guess the twist, then to pull the rug from under you, then to gently place the rug back down, only to SNATCH it away from under you again.

Oh that hadn’t even occurred to me! I kind of read it as the whole Kaiju incident was tearing holes in the multiverse with great abandon and it’s just happened to open up the wormhole to Ancelyn’s World

Yes, the reason given in the first episode is that he had to go back home for duty reasons or some such, and he’s therefore whizzed off away back to his home dimension presumably never to be seen again. That’s why she’s so torn up about the whole thing, because she thinks she can literally never see him again
