I’m not sure that it’s still the case but I always used to think that Robots of Death was underrated. Certainly, when I first discovered it back in the late 80s, I always felt like it never got the love it deserved.
It’s probably because it’s part of such a strong season but it always seemed to get overlooked in favour of Talons of Weng-Chiang, The Hand of Fear or The Deadly Assassin. It’s a more low-key story than those but, for me, Robots of Death is a story where everything (acting, writing, directing etc.) all comes together perfectly.
I was also really disappointed that the novelisation barely made it to 100 pages. I always felt it deserved better!
I feel like I’d like the Highlanders more if the video wasn’t missing. I remember fight scenes that were just repeatedly alternating the one picture they had of each character to noises of a fight…
So it is, and I’ve just added my own vote as well.
As I said, back in the 80s it always felt like it was overlooked but maybe I was wrong. Perhaps it was always more popular than I thought. Or possibly (and perhaps more likely) there’s been a reassessment of Season 14 over the years. Having greater access to Classic Who has certainly changed people’s opinions of a number of stories.
