TV Time - (but not Doctor Who)

To be fair, my description is a bit over-generalised and there’s a lot to like in these early episodes but it’s definitely a bit clunkier than I remember and very focussed on Xander being a randy teenager, Buffy wanting to date and Willow fancying Xander (with Cordelia on the fringes reinforcing the teenage girl bitch stereotype).

Giles is great (though if ASH grates on you, that’s probably not going to be a plus). The Master, the first season’s big bad, is a LOT camper than I remember too. He actually seems to be channeling the Master from our show.

ASH is like one of the main reasons I ever started Buffy! And Delta is right, s1 is delciously camp and fun and just a little heartbreaking at the end.

Oh, the Master is gloriously camp. The actor who plays him did a great job.

Though one of my favorite villains is the Mayor. (And Ethan Rayne. Who can forget Ethan Rayne?)

And then there’s Principal Snyder…

Watched the first of the new Black Mirror episodes, Common People.

It was good, but a bit too “real life” - it felt like it was criticising not just the US healthcare industry but also tech subscription services, particularly Amazon Prime with how they keep changing the deal.

Trying out Industry in hopes I can find another boardroom/business drama that’s as good as The Brothers and Mad Men. I haven’t heard any forced comedy or excessive swearing yet like in other shows in the genre, so that’s a good thing.

Edit: Finished episode one. That was good.

I started this show - Magicians, nearly done with Season 1,love it so much, the concept is basically theres this magic school,no its not hogwarts, its kind of like American Hogwarts, and theres this world called Fillory but its like teased to be made up since they made books out of them, really fun show tbh.

Mixing between 911 and Doctor Odyssey leading up to the crossover episode.

I don’t understand why US shows drop their seasons in chunks though. 911 had 8 episodes dropped on Disney+ last year and then 5 more episodes this year but apparently there’s another 5 coming in May!! WHY?

I think that’s a uniquely ABC thing when distributing to the rest of the world, I had the same thing with The Rookie here in Australia.

Watched the first episode of Gladiators, 2024 S1.

This brings back some memories!!

Probably not something I’d watch a lot of, quite fun for just playing in the background.

Sadly I’m not a fan (but these kind of shows are never really my kind of thing anyway), but I hugely appreciate how it’s become so popular

Oh I’m not that much of a fan, but it just brings back memories because I would have been about 8 when it first came out and used to watch it with my parents, so it’s very nostalgic for me.

We’ve just finished Series 2. It’s a brilliant show. The Gladiators themselves are wonderful characters - Legend is hilarious - and really play the roles well. The games are great (there are a couple of brilliant additions to Series 2 and they bring back the Atlaspheres too). Bradley is great. Barney is…there.

I definitely get a vibe that it’s very put-on, like wrestling - in the first episode, Venom cheats and then argues about it but it all seems like a bit of a farce, the audience are meant to boo the Gladiators, etc.

But then when a contestant loses, the Gladiators are really sweet and say they tried their best etc. A strange mixture of pretend conflict and wholesomeness. I’m sure the wholesomeness wasn’t so much in the 90s…

Nepotism at its finest?

Yeah, the Gladiators are hugely respectful of the contestants and acknowledge good game play and achievement. All of the Legend, Viper and Apollo stuff is obviously scripted but they play it so well (there are some even funnier bits in Series 2). I’m going to try and get tickets to Gladiators Live tomorrow because my daughter is a huge fan of the show. Her and my wife listen to the podcast that follows each episode.

Okay now I’m fascinated by what they could possibly say about Gladiators in a podcast?

It’s like when people discuss football… I don’t get it.

They talk about the events, the strategies, the strengths and weaknesses of contestants and Gladiators. They talk about rulings and so forth.

On one I listened to, I burst out laughing when they described Bradley and Barney as ‘bring your son to work day’.

They have guests too and talk to them about fitness and stuff. One of them is a comedian and one is a sportsperson like the Gladiators. One of the Gladiators, Nitro, actually comes from where we live and went to one of our local high schools. All of them are successful sportspeople and some are business owners.

I’ve just watched the first episode of the Last of Us 2 that is out, and it was absolutely fantastic. I was completely glued to my screen for the whole hour, and personally I haven’t played the second game which makes this feel very different to part 1 to me. Special shoutout to the direction and camerawork in the ‘intelligent infected’ scene, the movements in the back of the shot had me so scared for Ellie
