TV Club: Torchwood - They Keep Killing Suzie

I’m rather fond of this one. It does something interesting and has a number of fun moments. Indira Varma clearly loves the material she has to work with and the idea of Suzie gradually recovering whilst visiting her injuries on Gwen is deliciously twisted. It’s bonkers. It’s bizarre. it tries something a little… off the wall. Oh, and it’s so worth it for one episode more of Suzie Costello. I was genuinely disappointed when she dies in episode 1. I really thought she was going to be a fun character to explore as Torchwood unfolded. At least this gave us a little more!

Fantastic character piece and the only other Suzie episode in the show so it automatically gets a high ranking. I personally think this eclipses Everything Changes by a lot as the dialogue and motivations behind Susie’s actions are much better. I really enjoy how the

entire mystery of the episode was an elaborate plan to come back to life and it demonstrates just how methodical Suzie is.

This is definitely the episode that established Suzie as one of my favorite characters in the entire whoniverse! This episode also doesn’t have the downside of getting weighed down by any Owen and Gwen nonsense which is another big positive!

When I watched this when it first came out I only gave it 6/10. On this rewatch (the first since 2006!) I liked it a whole lot more. Maybe because Suzie’s betrayal of Gwen feels more adult than some of the other stuff this season? I would have happily seen more episodes of Suzie returning as a proper villain, to really drive the point home about who would choose to work for Torchwood.

I did like the exploration of Suzie in this episode, because we didn’t actually see much of her before. And her desperation to live and survive makes sense. I also liked how the police taunted Torchwood a bit, although there is a time and place for it and that wasn’t really it. Overall it was a pretty decent episode.

Also the beginnings of the relationship with Jack and Ianto.

There’s an Avengers episode called “They Keep Killing Steed”. Is that title originally based off something else I’m unfamiliar with?
