TV Club: Galaxy Four

I really like this. I like it when the ugly ailien are the good guys. Is it perfect? No. But I at least have a good time watching it. I watched the animation which does a perfectly good job. A great time!

I watched the animation and quite enjoyed it. Not amazing, but solid fun. The Drahvins are not without issue but they and the Rills are interesting species. It was better than I expected.

A very average adventure for Doctor Who & his companions.

This sums up beautifully why DW stands apart from all other TV for me. There are very few stories that I find without merit and, even then, it’s often because I’m missing something. It’s certainly the case that there are weak, or even bad episodes/stories. And, yet, it’s also the case that there’s pretty much ALWAYS something for me to take from them, to engage with at some level.

Galaxy Four doesn’t rate that highly for me, and it isn’t always that successful at what it does. Nevertheless, what it does is kind of important. It is a lesson in not judging by appearances. It is a lesson that many, to this day, could do with learning. Far from a favourite but it does always entertain me.

I often find that the people who object most vocally to messaging in DW (and particularly when they claim that it was too on the nose) are often those to whom the messaging most directly applies. I appreciate that some messages are delivered less elegantly than others, but the fact that we’re still fighting against bigotry on the basis of race, appearance, gender etc. shows that those messages are still desperately needed. Indeed, for all the burgeoning awareness of environmental plight, we live in an age where many companies and nations are rolling back their environmental protections (or diversity and inclusion initiatives) despite some pretty ā€˜on the nose’ messaging dating back to Planet of Giants or multiple examples of prime DW from Malcolm Hulke during the Pertwee era. I’m glad DW has tried (to varying degrees of success) since the very first episode (awareness of Susan as not like other children) to highlight things that should matter to all of us.

Galaxy Four? Bless it. It tried. And, you know what? I kind of love it for that.

Galaxy 4, as everyone has been saying, is basically fine. It’s a lot of wandering back and forth, and I do think making this four episodes is stretching the plot too thin. However, I’m a big Chumbley fan - I find them so endearing the way they wobble about and beep. Vicki too, I find to be wonderful in this - she’s easily the highlight on the character front.

The Drahvins too are interesting. I can never make up my mind if they’re supposed to be a bad look for stern women or not, and I do think they are utilised better in the Benny stories they’re in - though looking at the list, they are in way fewer Benny stories than I thought, which possibly proves my point that they were more effective there.

So yes, this one might be a little tedious, but it’s not one of those ones that I find so tedious that I don’t want to watch it. It doesn’t stick well in the mind, but I have fun when it’s on
