TV Club: Fury from the Deep

The TARDIS lands on the surface of the sea, just off the east coast of England. The time travellers use a rubber dinghy to get ashore, where they are shot with tranquilliser darts and taken prisoner by security guards as they have arrived in the restricted area of the Euro Sea Gas refinery.

At the refinery base, run by a man named Robson, the Second Doctor learns that there have been a number of unexplained problems with the pressure in the feed pipes from the offshore drilling rigs and a strange sound is reverberating through the pipeline. It is later revealed that one of the rigs has sucked up a parasitic form of seaweed, which is capable of releasing poisonous gas or a strange kind of foam that allows it to take control of the minds of those it touches.

Only watched this one once, as an animation, back when I had a streaming service I no longer have specifically because I wanted to watch Flux, and it had a few classic serials. Watched a couple specifically because I knew I was cancelling it, as Doctor Who was moving to Disney and Flux was over.

Remember it as being decent and was the sendoff for a companion, but it’s been a while.

If I were to rewatch it, I’d probably watch the recon, since that’s the form I haven’t seen…

I truly love Fury From the Deep. It’s the pinnacle of the base under seige / monster of the week format that was the mainstay of season 5. Fury stands out because of the setting, the sheer unknowable alien nature of the actually Earthly menace, the atmosphere (it’s fantastic) and the fact that the weed creature isn’t intent on world domination as most monstrous threats in this season are. It’s a fun story, but with messages about energy and environment. Yes, I love it. Animated. Recon. Soundtrack only. Doesn’t matter. It’s wonderful!

Back in ye olden days, this was my first experience of a companion leaving. I’m fortunate to have very clear memories of watching the story on transmission, but the ending broke a very young boy’s heart.

These were my original thoughts on this serial:

While I somewhat enjoy it, I think that Inferno is a better version of this idea. It does have a rather slow pace. While the threat is ever present, it does take a long while for anything to happen.

Looking back I still agree with what I initially though.

I absolutely agree that there are comparisons to be drawn with Inferno and I absolutely agree that Inferno is better. That said, Fury predates it by a couple of years and is very much a proto Pertwee era story. This gives it extra credit. Key steps along a road that led to everything wonderful about the Pertwee era.

Fury from the Deep is some of the finest Doctor Who ever for me (a Personal Favorite, that I do argue is up there in my personal Top 10).

Anyway, to me Fury is Season 5 at its very finest. While yet again we are doing a Base Under Siege, to me how it’s done here is maybe the most effective way yet. The Setting is quite claustrophobic and adds so much to the overall feel of this Serial. It has a very special energy to it, in a way I’d compare it to being also a little bit like a Haunted House Story.

You know something feels off and that something bad will happen, but while you get that feeling, you don’t quite know in what way. To me the Weed Creature and how it uses here might be one of the scariest Monster in the 1960s, they are so effective, and it’s a true shame that we can’t see the full extent of how they were used visually. Because if it’s anything going off by the Telesnaps/Soundtrack, it’s utterly creepy. In general, this one gets so many points from me just for the atmosphere it creates. It being a 6-Parter also neatly adds to it, sure I am a lover of a lot of 6 Parters, but to me the best one use their longer run to add to the dread, Stories like Power build up Tension so well thanks to being 6 Parts or Stories like The Daleks Masterplan really can get under your skin since it’s being so long adds to the sheer Terror, this one is no different. It’s a slow burn but such an effective one at that.

And that’s not even getting into the Characters! I am a big fan of Stories in Who that kinda throws you into the Side Casts, this Side Casts while not one of the best of the Show does this quite well. From the moment we meet them, you get a good feel of how that Character is, their Relation to the others & TARDIS Team, and what their values are. The Character of Frank Harris is a good example, I quite like how you really can tell that he cares about his Wife more than anything. And while it may get to an absurd amount of him saying ‘My Wife’ in this Serial (seriously do a drink game about it (actually don’t!)), I do think it makes him quite memorable and somebody who sticks out. Similarly, Robson is arguably the most memorable Member outside the TARDIS Team, he does feel quite accurate to the kind of Boss that will shout a lot.

But the true Highlight with our Characters is of course the TARDIS Team. The biggest shining example to me is Victoria, who I genuinely think is a great Character. Could she sometimes fall a bit into her own cliché? Yeah, I guess. But I think this Story does a lot for her Character and actually recontextualize her previous Outings for the better. This is of course slightly my own Interpretation, but going off this Story, I think this one works quite well:
While most other Companions and their Arc have them be excited, loving or even getting addicted to the life of Adventure & Terror. Victoria is kinda the Opposite, a young Teenager thrown in harms danger early on, losing somebody very dear to her and having to adapt to a World unlikely of her own. While she clearly enjoys and loves the Company that the Doctor & Jamie give her, just looking at her Adventures, she might just not truly want this Life of Danger & Adventure. It’s admittedly, as I said, an Interpretation, but one that rings true thanks to this one. Fury is the climax of that mini arc of hers where she realizes that this lifestyle just isn’t for her, and how she comes to this realization is utterly heartbreaking. Debbie plays it so well, and it was such an unexpected yet clever move to give most of Episode 6 to her Exit. Unusual for the Show at the time, yes, and while we had some great Exits before, to me this one still is one of the finest. It’s heartbreaking seeing Victoria having to struggle rather she wants to stay or continue her travels, but at the end of the Day she has to decide for herself. There are a lot of layers I could get into, but I will just say how it’s done is both perfect for her Character, and the others (such as having Jamie be upset about her leaving at the very end).

You don’t have me to tell you that Pat is great as ever, and so is Frazer. They are a popular pairing for a Reason, and here with Debbie they are just such a lovely Team. Be it their first Scenes where they are having fun or the way how they go about this whole Adventure. They are all just a great Team, enhances by a great Script and really strong Music.

One thing I didn’t go into detail is the Way the Weed Creature was defeated. It being literally defeated by Victoria’s screaming is maybe a little silly, I admit, but to me a creative and kinda fitting way for the last Story for her to go. She is the one who defeats it at the end (kinda) and that’s a really lovely touch to end her last Adventure with the Doctor on. Silly, yes, but still nice.

As one may notice, I am hugely fond of this Serial and admittedly maybe I am biased as I can relate quite well to Victoria’s anxiety  But I truly think this Serial is a perfect mix between Horror and Emotions.

I wish I could be as thrilled about the Animation, as I am with the Story itself, sadly to me the Animation is pretty weak. While I am as always grateful for the fact that an Animation exists, giving more People the Opportunity to watch this Serial in some form, I sadly don’t think it does the Story justice. I don’t mind creative liberties, but the Set lose their claustrophobic feel when they are expanded so much as they are here. I am not that fond of the Artstyle for the Characters either here, but it’s honestly fine. Really, I think I would have had issues with the Animation either way on this Story. Still it’s great there is a moving Option for others, I, for one, think I’ll stay with the recon on this one.

In short: I really love this Story, if you couldn’t tell!

I’m so mixed on this ep I think it doesn’t help that I was the first time a recon I watched of a lost episode became animated and well the animation is interesting

The suspense in the atmosphere of this story is what makes it for me. I think the truth at the end of it maybe doesn’t quite live up to the same creepiness of that building suspense, but that doesn’t matter too much to me. I also love that proper emotional weight is given to the exit of Victoria, it’s hinted at throughout so that it feels right when the time comes, which is more than can be said for a lot of early companion exits unfortunately. Far from a perfect serial but a very enjoyable one to me, 7/10

It has Lovecraftian seaweed zombies.

That’s all I need; I love this one.

@RandomJoke what a beautifully written and rich account! Thank you so much for sharing this with us (and in such detail). Genuinely a lovely read and plenty to think about.

I agree with much. Though I’m more forgiving of the animation, I do think the actual story visuals would have done so much to enhance the atmosphere further - what little we see is truly claustrophobic and really rather scary for the year and intended audience.

I adore how this story enhances so many of the tropes used throughout S5 whilst subverting others. Victoria’s screaming being the solution is silly, yes, but it’s a charming kind of silly that is narratively quite satisfying too, giving Victoria her chance to make the definitive difference (against one of the scariest monsters she faces) before stepping aside and into a much deserved quiet life.

I love how well this works as a proto Pertwee era story (which we’d see refined a step further in next season’s The invasion) and how many things it does that are still commonplace in modern DW. The Well owes a not inconsiderable debt to Fury.

I love your passion for this story. Thank you.

Thank you! I didn’t intend to write so much about it, but sometimes one gets carried away! :hugs: I am glad you enjoyed reading it!!

And that’s totally fair, again I don’t think it’s a bad Animation by any means, but with this Story and certain ones, one might be a bit more protective of how the animation is. Again I am glad it exists tho!

I really enjoyed this one. Very fun and entertaining with a great guest cast and some brilliant writing. The seaweed monster was goofy but worked surprisingly well and the animation was truly amazing at points like the helicopter escape scene in the final episode. I love how they handled Victoria’s exit as well. My main gripe is the pacing again but I’ve come to expect that from these six part base under siege stories.

I’m not quite sure how I feel about this one - I think it does some things well, but other things not so well. Victoria’s departure is really skillfully done, and everything to do with the “seaweed monster” is very effective (especially the horrifically creepy scene in which Mr Oak and Mr Quill show up in Maggie’s apartment in episode 2). The side characters leave a lot to be desired, ranging from a bit annoying (Van Lutyens) to criminally negligent (Megan Jones) to outright nasty (Robson), and it’s hard to root for any of them, which is a problem when our regulars don’t have as much to do in this serial as others. The pacing is also pretty glacial here - it’s episode 4 before anyone actually bothers to go down to the impeller and look at it, despite the fact it’s first discussed in episode 1! The first three episodes really just seem to consist of the side characters shouting at each other, which I didn’t find very enjoyable to watch, and at a certain point Robson and Megan’s refusal to shut down or evacuate the rigs stretches credulity to breaking point. The second half is better, but I think the serial could have done with being cut down to four episodes, personally.

Three out of five for me, not bad, but not particularly good either.

Extremely obvious case of animation not being able to capture the horror of the story you can compare the animation and the censor clips and it just makes me sad we don’t have an actual part that survives

Fury from the Deep clinches my dislike of most of Season 5. With the exception of Tomb and Enemy, every story drags and feels so repetitive. Here we are in a base. Here is the leader of that base. They are a very stubborn man who won’t listen to common sense for no other reason than that is what their character function demands. There is a slowly encroaching menace (probably linked with white stuff in some shape of form, be that snow, web or foam). Victoria screams. A lot. The monsters are usually slow and lumbering. Here are a bunch of other characters who argue with the leader a lot and tend to stand around for lots and lots of scenes.

Fury from the Deep has lots of good ideas and yes, animation excepted, it is quite atmospheric. But I really can’t get excited by any of these stories which, for years were presented as the epitome of superb Classic Who.

Troughton though is always phenomenal.

Loved this one! The animated recon was a bit stiff and I do think like most 6-parters it could have been a tad more tightly written, but all in all it’s a banger. Creepy, atmospheric, and gasp a classic companion exit that actually works! 9/10 for me, will definitely be giving the telesnap recon a try next to see if that works better for me than the animation.

A good idea for a story, if not a more forgettable missing story

I’m not really a fan of this one telesnaps , animation neither really connect with me. I’m not in a hurry to rewatch but maybe if it ever gets found seeing the actual footage will change my mind.

But it’s really just oh you think Victoria screams a lot how about we make a whole series where she screams and her screaming is also the resolution to the plot oh and let’s throw a giant squid there
