Creating this thread for people to discuss their favourite Trans and Non-Binary Doctor Who characters!
From the titular time lord himself, to BBV’s Lauren Anderson, there’s a hell of a load of Trans and Non-Binary characters, both officially stated to be trans, implied, or that just kinda feel like it makes sense they are.
I’ve gotta say I love how ahead BF is with representation compared to TV Who. For me, I absolutely love Orr. One of the few NB rep’s I’ve ever seen/heard in media across the board really. I think they’re really just a cool and unique character, especially with the non-human angle.
Likewise, I love Tania. Liv was my favourite companion going into Stranded, so the introduction of Tania and them becomining an item was great and there were so many lovely scenes with them together!
My favourite is Rose. That she was in the first of the 60th was a great way of showing all haters that this is a show with a huge audience for everyone, and if that bothers you, then leave!
I love the way that in Gallifrey we’ve seen quite a few ‘gender change’ regenerations - obviously Time Lord gender isn’t the same as human, but Trave, the General, Vibax - all Time Lords who have changed which I think is cool.
Also I guess that main guy Doctor Who? Has anyone ever heard of them?
Honestly, I find all the trans and non-binary characters I’ve come across very likeable. They’re usually the most open-minded and brave characters. Tania Bell is the first one who comes to mind, followed by Rose Noble.
I feel like all my favourites are ones that are only half so in canon I do love the inherent transgenderness of the Time Lords and I need to reconstruct my argument on how Romana is nonbinary sometime (or dig it up on Tumblr I think it’s somewhere on there)
I do, though it’s a lot more complicated give their end and that they mantain individual personalities in one single body. I’d argue Fey starts suffering from dysphoria after merging with Shayde. So it’d be like… an inverse trans experience?
But there is a period, as short as it is, that they are perfectly comfortable with each other. So the trans reading is super valid.
Happy trans day of visibility! We can finally perceive all of the trans people before they become an unknowable mass again. Enjoy being able to perceive me whilst you can
8th Doctor the non-binary character of all time <3 Especially the EDA interpretations. (That quote from Interference!) Also 8 is the character I get the most gender envy from and who helped me realise stuff about my own gender to be honest. Of course the Doctor is always genderqueer, and I love most incarnations both as characters and for trans readings, but there’s something special about 8.
Oh, I love Calypso! And they were fantastic in The End of the Beginning (and I loved the tease of a Calypso/Constance romance…)
As already mentioned, I love Orr and Tania, and Rose.
And it’s not Who, but it is Big Finish: Taylor from the Dark Season series, played by Aitch Wylie, is absolutely fantastic!! Both the character and the actor are nonbinary
I think that Tania is beautiful and her relationship with Liv is amazing, and a wonderful piece of representation, one that I personally connect to very much now as a trans lesbian. I’m glad that over the last 10 years we have been getting more representation and are only going to be getting more! x
Is Rebecca Root’s character in Zaltys trans or enby? I think they are referred to as ‘they’ but I can’t actually remember. (Sorry this post is hugely clunky!)
