Trans and Nonbinary Doctor Who Writers

I recently ordered a copy of The Good Doctor by Juno Dawson – very excited to read it! – and it got me thinking about trans and non-binary people who’ve written for the DWU, especially prose authors as that’s the medium I’ve been really digging into lately. As a trans woman myself it’s really nice to see these voices being represented in the DWU.

The main ones I’m aware of are Juno Dawson, as mentioned before, and Juliet Kemp, a non-binary person who’s written lots of short stories for Faction Paradox. The Good Doctor will be my first foray into Dawson’s work but I do love Juliet Kemp’s writing! From what I’ve read I’d particularly recommend “Squatter’s Rights”.

I’d love to hear from everyone else – any particular trans/NB writers in the DWU whose work you find intriguing, enjoyable, or would otherwise like to spotlight?

I really like Fio Trethewey’s stuff. He’s trans and has written some of my favorite Gallifrey episodes, First Days of Phaidon and Transference. He’s also written some other things, but I’m mostly aware of his Gallifrey stuff.

Seconding Fio, his work on Gallifrey is truly brilliant :star_struck:

The Good Doctor is a fun book and of course Juno Dawson was also behind Redacted.

I listened to a great podcast with her recently talking sci fi with Tia Kofi:

Definitely want more of Dawson’s work. I’m not as keen on The Dollhouse, but I absolutely adore Orr which you can tell wasn’t written by a cis writer (and I don’t think would be as good if it were). Redacted Season One is also great, and I’ve heard a lot of good things about The Good Doctor!

You can, if you want, read some good things about The Good Doctor…

(With some spoilers obviously)
