I wanted to run a bracket tournament, and it’s no surprise that I’ve decided to do a Thirteenth Doctor episodes tournament.
Because there are 31 episodes in her era, one episode automatically goes through to Round 2, as we can’t split 31 into groups of 2. In this case that episode is going to be The Woman Who Fell To Earth.
Round 1, Match 1
Praxeus
Fugitive of the Judoon

Round 1, Match 2
It Takes You Away
War of the Sontarans

In Match 1, it’s a globe-trotting environmental thriller versus a game-changing adventure in Gloucester.
And in Match 2, we have a disturbing and experimental Scandi-Noir facing off against the Crimean War romp that is Flux’s second chapter.
It Takes You Away versus War of the Sontarans was tough.
War is easily the Revival’s best take on the Sontarans, and it’s a really fun episode, but ultimately I prefer the intriguing vibes of It Takes You Away.
Match 1 is a no-brainer for me: Fugitive Of The Judoon wins out over Praxeus (aka Kerblam! with some minor improvements)
Match 2 is much trickier, though, as I like those two stories just about equally. But ultimately, I went with It Takes You Away, as it’s just slightly better at standing on its own as an episode.
Match 1 was an easy win for Judoon.
Match 2 was harder because I don’t remember “It Takes You Away”, but I have rated it higher and therefore vote for it.
The second one was really hard because I love both, but having rewatched War of the Sontarans recently my love for that one is fresher in my mind so I went for that!
It Takes You Away is tied for favourite Thirteen episode for me, so that’s an easy choice.
I’ll take Praxeus over Fugitive, because I think the latter isn’t that great when you strip out the Fugitive Doctor elements, whereas Praxeus feels a bit more fresh and interesting to me.
It is a tricky one, because War or the Sontarians is really good and I feel bad that it’ll probably be voted out this early, but It Takes You Away is one of these weird experimental episodes I love that sticks in my memory, so it has to take the spot…
War of the Sontarans vs It Takes You Away was a close one, but I went Sontarans, the reason for which can be summarized in one word. “Ribbons.”
Judoon over Praxeus was pretty easy though. Judoon is pretty good, where Praxeus was just kind of eh. A bit redundant to do an environmental story only three episodes after another environmental story, even if the later one was better.
Should I then wait for my next one? We currently have 3 active bracket tournaments, my one wrapping up after today still leaves 2. I may also switch to another classic series one if this is going to be a modern series one, we’ll see.
