She was kinda the biggest expert on not dying around…
I love Graham, he’s just fantastic.
And I don’t think he sidelined Yaz so much as Yaz was written on basically the same level as Ryan. (And I am just not that fond of Mandip Gill’s acting)
I’ve seen the Graham 2.0 bandied about before, but I just don’t see it. Dan has such an amazing personality and humour, and John Bishop nails the acting every scene he is in. Plus Dan and Diane is the best romance in the Whoniverse for me )
I feel like someone needs to stand up for Ryan in this thread (I know a couple of you have already, but he’s getting lots of ).
He did have SOME depth and progression.
- He dealt with death at the start, and in It Takes You Away
- He had a major arc in his relationship with Graham
- He grew to have a better understanding with his Dad in Resolution
- You saw him interacting with his mates, back in Sheffield
- And he’s got cheekbones that could slice diamonds in half!
I am glad you like him. I don’t agree with your points. But if you do that is great. My take is hidden but you can read it if you want.
why I think that you are wrong 😉
He suffered a loss but it was almost never a thing in the show. This could be good premises but nothing happens with this.
Did he really have that or was it something that happened from time to time but it was mostly forgotten by the writers. This could be good premises but nothing happens with this.
Yes this happened but did not affect his character. This could be good premises but nothing happens with this.
This is not a character trait. Tibo Is also a better character than Ryan.
I give you this. He has great cheekbones.
I am a certified Flux fan. Is it a mess? Yes. Does it have far too much stuff in it for 6 episodes? Absolutely. But damn did I have a lot of fun watching it week to week, wondering what would happen, seeing how everything came together. Halloween Apocalypse is just an exciting introduction, War of the Sontarans is the first good Sontaran story on TV in quite a while, and I love the return of the more classic design. Village of the Angels is the most effective they have been since the two parter in Series 5. The other three episodes left the most to be desired, and the ending was a very rushed job, but honestly not enough to ruin probably my favorite 13th Doctor season.
Also it has Dan the man with a pan plan
I love the Flux. I don’t think it’s perfect, but as a huge classic who fan (and one who prefers it overall over nuwho) it was really fun getting a series that basically was one big serial. I don’t love everything of it, I thought the finale was rather poor I must admit, liked what Jodie did, when she split in 3 Versions, but overall it was super messy. Until then? I’d say we got 4 amazing episodes and one fine, very flawed one.
Halloween Apocalypse is so much fun. Love Karvanista, visually he looks great and is such a loveable character. Same goes for Dan, while it’s a shame we didn’t got even one fully Solo Yaz + 13 Episode, I think Bishop gives such a charming perfomance. He is far from the deepest character, but his charm does a lot for me. Also, one Episode set on Halloween is great, maybe a hot take, but I wish NuWho would do Halloween Specials instead of Christmas ones.
War of the Sontarans continues to be quite great. The Redesign of the Sontarans is exactly what you would want from them. It takes a lot of inspiration of the Time Warrior Design (which is the best televised Sontarans Story) and modernizes it in a great, appealing way. I am glad they changed it up because I can’t stan the RTD Redesign, but that’s a story for another time.
I think Once, Upon Time is pretty good. It’s probably the first part, where you can tell how messy this Story can be at times. But I do love the overall concept and thought it was pulled off quite well. Having our leads getting to play different characters was really fun.
Village of the Angels is the standout here, love it. Visually stunning and I am just impressed. The Cliffhanger is super well done, and it’s been a good while since the Angels were used effectively for me.
Survivors of the Flux is a bit of a mixed bag for me, some great bits, but I can definitely see the messiness of it all in this one.
And well, the finale wasn’t too great.
I can certainly see the criticism handed against it, but personally speaking I enjoyed this one quite a lot. While I like the performer, I feel Bel’s and Vinder’s Character could have been left out, besides that the side character cast is actually pretty memorable.
In terms of the lack of consequences, while I do agree with that statement on paper, I’d argue this is something that a lot of Who (NuWho) is guilty of. I am not necessarily defending the way how it’s done in “Flux”, there is absolutely a point to critic it, it’s a shame that some of them weren’t explored that much. But with Stories such as “Empire of Death” or even the Series 3 Finale, they set up such a high scale and yet often it gets reversed an episode later or in the same episode. I think Who definitely should stop that in general, since after a while it gets tiring, reversing it so quickly and dare I say “so easily”. But then again, that might be a topic for its own. Personally, I am not expecting that to stop any time soon.
In terms of the discussion of worst companion, I know it’s a subjective topic, but I throw in “Jeremy” from the two Jon Pertwee Audio Dramas of the 90s. I say… The most cardboard companion in my eyes, at least.
I’m happy folks can get something out of Flux. For me, it is the currently lowest rated average of any season, serial, or run of specials in Doctor Who on the Guide, which I think is about right for how I feel about it.
That being said I did enjoy the bombastic opening that is The Halloween Apocalypse and Once, Upon Time had some weird moments which were at least pretty memorable.
Oh and the TARDIS going all weird and growing extra doors, and the door coming from the floor, was so brilliant and made me smile, I just wish that had a bit of a better explanation.
But then that lead onto Eve of the Daleks which was pretty great.
I admit that I haven’t watched Thirteen properly, but the little I did see of Flux left me with a poor impression. It seemed like a bombardment of ideas, and a bit of a mess… Can’t wait to get to it in a couple of years.
