Correction on Turlough’s last appearance on your review, if you’re talking specifically about full-cast stuff, he more recently appeared in Red for Danger, my jaw dropped! I share your criticisms of the second part of the story though.
Ah yes I totally forgot, it set him up to be in the next 6DA boxset , thanks for reminding me :)
Land of Fools
9/10 for this one. I suspected a stealth two parter back when details were revealed for this one, but the reveal still came as a surprise. My only criticism is isn’t this now a paradox? He’s stopped from taking the last Asteri by Joanie, who was created by the last Asteri in the future. Or am I misinterpreting that ending?
The set I’ll be listening too straight away need me some sixie and turlough now
It’s so weird I’ve been seeing so many commercials with starlight or wishing upon a star like I’ve never seen any of these commercials before but since I’ve listened to this set it’s everywhere
Just finished episode 1. Wasnt thrilled about it, but I did have really high expectations because of the writers.
I’ll leave the rest for tomorrow, I reckon. It’s “Tegan’s bloody annoying Groundhog Day” that I’m really interested in.
Finished Helter Skelter, a really fun story that makes brilliant use of the time loop format, 8/10
(Turlough kicks down door)
TURLOUGH: I like my lockpick better.
Enjoying episode 2 A LOT more than episode 1. Having a lot of fun with this one
I want some Candy Floss!
Finished the first one! Tried something different in the review. No spoilers
Brilliant read! I find your perspectives on things super interesting. Thanks for writing it!
Finished the boxset today with Land of Fools, a brilliant ending and an even more brilliant conclusion to the first story, 8/10
Finished Field of Miracles. It was good, though I enjoyed the second half a lot more than the first. I ended up rating it 4/5. I’d love to write more reviews for the Fire Horse badge, but I honestly can’t think of enough to say about this to warrant an actual meaningful review.
Listening to Helter Skelter, the Doctor feels like it should be Matt Smith.
So I’ve been thinking of this boxset a lot, today.
I really didn’t enjoy the first one. Just felt like it didn’t hit me or affect me in any way.
Then the second one was really fun. Nothing new, of course, but it was so fun!! I had such a good time with it.
Then the third one started interesting but then turned boring. The set up seemed great:
Teegan in 1980, a year before she left, going to see her friend who died that year. There’s loads of potential there!
But they didn’t do anything interesting with it.
I’m gutted because I’ve heard nothing but good things about Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle on this forum, but the vast majority of their stories haven’t done anything for me, or stood out as anything special:
The Grey Mare, Black Friday, The Lincolnshire Poacher, Dog Hop, The Gentleman Thieves, Lost Hearts: all pretty forgettable, perfectly passable stories. They don’t have that UMPH that I look for, that makes me proper enjoy a story.
(I will say, I did enjoy The Quintessance and Pendour Cove, the latter of which I’d rate 5 stars, which does undercut what I’m saying a bit…)
But I dunno… just disappointed by most of their stories, and particularly their entries in this box set, which is a shame, because I was so hyped for more Turlough.
If nobody else is with you, I am with you. I’ve liked most M&P stories I’ve heard but I’ve not loved any of them
Here are my spoiler-free reviews for the first two stories. Thanks for reading!
Field of Miracles: 6/10
A solid premise with a clever twist on wish fulfilment, bolstered by strong character moments and an effective post-war setting. Sadly, uneven pacing, a weak villain, and a slightly too-convenient resolution hold it back. Not a disaster, but a rare misfire from an otherwise reliable writing duo.
Helter Skelter: 9/10
A clever, character-driven time loop story that lets Tegan take centre stage and run the show. Fun, easy to follow, and packed with humour, even if the cult subplot feels a bit undercooked. A lively and refreshing twist on a familiar formula.
Finished the first instalment tonight. Field of Miracles was a fun folk horror story that could’ve used a bit more time to flesh out its thematic undercurrents. 7/10
Also, on an unrelated note, I swear the art of the Classic Who cliffhanger has been getting worse lately.
Completely agree! Stewart and Mooney wrote such weak Classic Who cliffhangers! Even the mini-cliffhangers throughout the story.
I’ve been noticing this with a lot of Big Finish recently. It’s odd what they decide is a big enough “OMG” to cue the theme music to.
