This thread is a dedicated space for fans of the Sixth Doctor, his companions, and the colorful patchwork of stories that comprise his era.
Being an appreciation thread, please refrain from comments which serve to criticize any of the above. This includes posts such as “Six was redeemed in the audios”[1], “Colin’s a wonderful actor; a shame his Doctor’s run suffered from bad scripts”, and “Evelyn made him a better character”. Critiques and rants are better suited to this all-purpose Sixth Doctor Era thread.
I understand that this he is a very divisive character navigating some very divisive storylines, but I’d like this to be a space where fans like myself can be profuse in our love of his era without seeing posts that are against his television serials or treat his audio depiction as the only worthwhile Sixth Doctor. There’s enough of that on the internet.
or any other verbiage carrying the implication that his television run is “less than”. If you prefer him in the audios, that’s fine, but please leave any objective language to other threads. ↩︎
I said recently on a tumblr poll that Six is the Doctor I’d most like to travel with. Especially, I think, around that time when he’s travelling with Flip and Constance – when he’s perhaps at his most contemplative and literary and at his most fun. I’m so looking forward to my upcoming 6/Flip/Constance marathon!
My husband . I definitely did not go into my first Six serial thinking anything of his appearance, but gosh does it make the character 10x better for me xD.
We love a contemplative and literary Six! The former: I love the opening of “Quicksilver”, the short but introspective scene between him and Constance. I’d love if they had a story revolving around classical music. She plays piano and he obviously loves the art form. I think it would be a sweet bonding moment between them (I know I’m a shipper, but I say this with platonic intentions!). The latter: This reminds me that I need to put “The Lovecraft Invasion” on my Saved list because I keep forgetting to revisit it. That audio exceeded my expectations.
The trio of her, Six, and Flip work beautifully together. It’s a shame (and strange how) their era is so overlooked.
I’m eager to hear your thoughts once you start the marathon!
Had his ups and downs but 6 is a Doctor that grows on me more and more with each story I listen to
I read one of his short stories ‘Gone Too Soon’ today which was wonderful
I never really prescribed to the notion that the audios redeemed Sixth as a character. By the end of Trial Of A Time Lord, he had long since proved that he carried the Doctor’s compassion and moral compass as well as any of his predecessors or successors. For me, it was more like they helped me zero in on what I liked about his incarnation in particular (namely, the metafictional bent to a lot of his stories), and I honestly cherish the moment when I could feel all the pieces fall into place in my brain and going “Oh… so that’s what he’s all about.” It’s all valid, same as with any other Doctor.
As much as Twin Dilemma has a bad reputation (and I don’t necessarily disagree with the criticisms), I think something that often gets overlooked is that Sixth reacted in a violent way, knew that he did the wrong thing, and decided that the safest thing to do is to get away from everyone until he figures himself out. Sure, Peri was involved in all that, but even during one of his more infamous moments, that genuine Doctorness, that consideration of others, still showed through.
I also just love Baker’s performance in the role. Seeing him in his element on screen and hearing it on audio, it’s all too easy to understand how he could have landed the role without officially auditioning for it. He just… gets it.
Recently I’ve been listening to more and more 6th Doctor audios and I’m loving them so much! I really can’t wait to do more of them, its great when Doctors eras are expanded like this. I do want to rewatch his tv era someday too, as I’ve only done all of Classic Who once before (bar a couple of odd repeats).
Yes, exactly. People are so quick to narrow in on the “Doctor strangling companion” scene while putting blinders on his behavior during the rest of the serial. Despite struggling with regeneration, he showed compassion and love/friendship a good handful of times throughout The Twin Dilemma.
Speaking of becoming a hermit, time to watch BBV’s The Stranger ;–)
He stuck it to his agent who claimed he’d never be Doctor Who if he took the part of Maxil. In your face, agent, he got the role handed to him on a silver platter! If only I was a fly at that wedding party that got JNT’s wheels spinning. Nevermind “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, let’s see it in real time haha.
The Nightmare Fair was my first Classic Who Big Finish, and I think at that point the only Classic TV story I’d scene was City of Death. I’d heard about three lines from the Doctor and two from Peri when I thought, well, that’s my Tardis team.
They’re really amazing, aren’t they? They just have a spark that makes them work brilliantly together. I was the same way when I was introduced to an episode of theirs. I knew within the first few lines that I was going to love them.
He’s my favorite actor. I’ve never cared about actors until I learned about him. I like how deep he is; he’s obviously cultured and well-read, which further draws me to him.
I have issues with the era (that I won’t get into, as this isn’t the thread for that!) but one thing I’ll always love are Bryant and Baker’s performances. Fantastic actors and from everything I’ve seen, wonderful folks who always go for bat for the show. I consistently am impressed by how amazing Colin Baker is as an actor especially
Thanks to the Quin Dilemma, we have a semi-definitive timeline that goes by companions: “Peri, Frobisher, Peri and Frobisher, Peri, Grant, Peri again, Mathew Sharpe, Evelyn, Frobisher; Frobisher, Peri, Actis and Carf; Jamie and Zoe, Evelyn, Evelyn and Brewster, Evelyn, Mel, Jago and Litefoot, Mila, Jamie, Flip, Peri; Jason, Crystal and Zog; Constance, Constance and Flip, Mari, Mel, Mel and Evelyn, and Mel [again]”. Because Hebe Harrison isn’t in the list, we must therefore assume that her stories occur after this.
