Streaks - on the roadmap

Hey everyone this is a ROADMAP post which means you can vote for ideas that you want to see sooner, this will help shape the future of the site!

This is something that has popped up in lots of apps such as the Kindle app, the Apple Books app, Reddit…

The idea is that if you do something on the site every day (like rate a story) you maintain a streak, and you can keep daily, weekly, or monthly streaks going.

Then if you manage to keep them going for long enough, you earn a badge, or something else that is cool.

I like the idea of it, it’s fun and gives you an incentive to keep coming back, but I’m not sure if it’s a little bit like a dark pattern?

What do you think, would you like this feature? If so, VOTE on it!

Oh god no! I get enough anxiety from not being in the top 3 of the leaderboard on here without worrying about whether I’ve lost my ratings streak on the main site!!!

Makes note: It would aggrevate @deltaandthebannermen, that’s a +1…

It’s a trend, but not one I’m necessarily very happy with. This isn’t something I need to see for TARDIS Guide as I’m already obsessed by all the streaks that I have to maintain elsewhere

I agree with Coldstream, I think this would cause me more stress than anything.

I’m terminally online here, plus my ego isn’t attached to fake streaks, but I do like the idea.

I agree that it is Gameification, but sadly that’s part of running a public website. It’s the balancing act of fun vs being a dealer.

I’m torn on this one. One the one hand, it would be cool and I’d definitely like it at first, but long term I feel like it would be stressful and also doesn’t really feel fair, because some stories are so much longer than others. Someone might be able to rate a short trip a day but you can’t really do that with 600 page books. So definitely don’t attach any badges to that. However, I feel like it could be cool in the statistics section maybe? Would have to be careful with phrasing probably, so it doesn’t create pressure, but that might be fun (and you’d probably also have to exclude the initial or burst rating if people aren’t on here very often/for the first time so it’d be pretty complicated maybe)

I agree with your point, but is there a single 600-page book in the Whoniverse? They’re all like 200-300 pages :joy:

Actually you’ve just given me a good idea, a “sort” feature to sort by page count, or length of story.

I’d like to see which are the longest and shortest stories.

I didn’t even realise that there isn’t such an option already. But you’re welcome, I guess

I have no idea, I haven’t really read any of the books yet  but either way, there’s some pretty big differences between how long media takes you

This…

doesn’t seem like something I’d like, sorry, I think it would just stress me out.

What about maintain the streak also by update
on Currently Reading. Maybe a percentage update?

Seems a little bit like busywork really.

Maybe weekly streak wouldn’t be so bad though?

Or monthly?

I like weekly more

Pot. Kettle. Black.

Anyway sometimes it’s useful to sort your list of stories by the shortest ones, if you are short on time but want to finish something.

I do that on Letterboxd all the time, I watch movies based on how short they are a lot :joy:

I do this as well, and I’ve actually seen plenty of great movies thankts to this.
