Need to go and pick up the kids at daycare. Will think more about this during the weekend.
What do you do if you watch The Web of Fear all the way through with the animated episode 3, but then also watch the recon version of episode 3?
This is why we should list individual episodes on the site rather than stories…
By “only one version shows up in search” you mean just a generic “PotD” listing and not one that says “POTD - Animation” or something similar, correct? Because I can see the latter being confusing to people.
Also, regarding the fourth quoted paragraph, if you engage with a piece of media on separate days, those would appear in your diary, correct? But I agree with Tian that having to press repeat just to log a different version seems like unnecessary work. I like that idea he posed about the pop-up asking which variant a person engaged with (but I also like the mockup where a user was free to rate things as they chose using the tabs).
I feel like I’m even more confused than I began haha I will think on it some more!
That’s true. It’s not ideal. I want to make it easy.
Well there’s no solution for that in our other discussions either lol
I do have entries for every episode but I really don’t think people would want to rate every single one, there are soooooo many.
Yeah currently if you search for eg The Celestial Toymaker there are several results of different versions - B&W, animated, soundtrack.
I’d prefer if it there was one option which then had different options on the page. I’m not sure which is best though.
I think that this is solved by our same-day no-repeat rule. Is someone rates the animation, the main story, and the telesnaps on the same day that is probably one watch with different versions.
I wouldn’t put it past a Who fan to watch them all on the same day though so this kind of thing might end up being confusing. That’s why I said I’d do “completed from a different version” and let them rate it, if they actually rewatched it then press Repeat.
But I do think this all makes things complicated to use.
I think that if you do that then you are engaged enough to also log it manually as an repeat
That’s a fair point as well
I see it like this. We have two types of users watching a story. For simplicity, let’s call them casual fans and hardcore useres (they are probably not casual in the common sense because they log stuff on a DW site, but when it comes to our site, they are more casual).
Casual users - Are doing classics from the beginning for the first time and want help to keep track of what is good or not. These users can just rate the main story and do not really have to do anything else. This is also the story that shows up in the “up next” and they can rate it from there. Their experience will be the same as today.
Hardcore users (really don’t like these names lol) - Know what versions they want to watch and might have seen or want to see different versions of a story. They have probably already seen everything and want to start rating versions. They can click on a story and change to the version they want to rate because they are that engaged. Their experience will be kind of the same, but instead of going to a separate story for animation, they change the tab.
One thing we could do is add symbols for different variants on the story cards to show that there are variants under them, similar to how clothing stores do for different colours. If you click on the animation icon, you can land directly on the animation page.
For a moment I thought he was there as a demonstration of a hardcore Doctor Who fan
That is Ian Levine
It was not the best example but the first one I found
This all sounds good.
Here I am to throw a hand grenade into this conversation with a totally different idea, what do you think of this?
I plan to soon add rating and reviewing to Collectables.
What if, anyone who watches the Animated Reconstruction of The Power of the Daleks just puts their rating on the DVD?
I’d do something to merge all the DVD/BluRay/Steelbook reviews so you can read them all in one place but people can see which one you mean.
Would that work? Or should people just be reviewing the DVD extras etc.
Just an idea!!
Could you maybe do an n-1 sort of thing? Like, if someone rates a story and a variation, the variation doesn’t count towards their diary, but every additional variation does. The main story is always counted, of course, cause that’s probably what most people will actually rate.
I think that they are more like the Target books. They should be linked but are different things. But that is my thinking.
Isn’t that what we are talking about though?
Ooh, I still think that we should keep adaptations as a separate thing. Too many variants otherwise. But maybe I am wrong with that. I have just thought that we meant variants as we use it on the site today.
But the animations aren’t adaptations, they are variations currently, and in all your visuals you have a tab for Animation?
Maybe animations should be adaptations? They get snipped, tweaked, altered, etc. They’re new animations adapted to (mostly) the original TV soundtrack.
The reason I made the animations as variations is because it may be the only way someone watches a story.
So if they only watch the animated version of Power of the Daleks then I think they should still be able to unlock the badge for seeing all of the Second Doctor’s stories.
And currently the only way to do that is to use variations.
If I change it, you could unlock it just by reading all the Target books, which seems wrong.
Unless I carve out a special case for visual adaptations.
