Story Variations - how best to handle these?

This button also opens up variations

Okay, I have thought some more, and I think that we should consider these things:

  • I think that if you complete a version on the same day as you rate the “Main Story”, then it wouldn’t log as a repeat because we can assume that is the version they have completed. If it is on different days, then it is a repeat.

  • Is the broadcast version a version of the Main Story or is it the Main Story?

  • Should the broadcast version be visible on stories that are completely lost because people might remember, or should it only be an option if there are found episodes?

  • If it is a book with one audiobook, then I think that it should have 2 tabs: “Main Story” and “Audiobook”, not one to rate the physical book. Does everyone agree with that?

Hey guys, psst, what about variations of stories on home media which have optional updated VFX (or, in some cases, full blown special editions such as Planet of Fire)?

But what if I do actually complete a variation the same day as the main story? I might be crazy like that.

It’s the Main Version, right?

I still think it’s nice to have the broadcast versions visible, but it’s not a big deal.

This is how I would understand it, yes.

I think that this could solve those kinds of things in the future if the demand is there. We just need to add more versions. I think that they could be future-proof. (Might need a design solution for showing a lot of versions if we come to that, but that is the only thing stopping us.)

The way this question is worded is a little confusing. If the book is the main/original story, then you are technically rating the physical book (and then the audiobook and audioplay versions would be separate). Unless I’m misunderstanding?

Yeah, it probably is. In theory, you could argue that the main story is separate from the media, and that is why I also asked about the broadcast version.

I also think this should be the other way around. If someone is rating both the Main Story and a variation on the same day, I’d be inclined to think they only watched one and rated the other just to get it off their unrated list.

I listened to an audio (variation) last year of which I have decided to read the book (original version/Main Story) this week. I don’t think that should count as a repeat.

(Sorry if I’m rehashing old news here. There were a lot of posts I had to read to catch up lol).

This is my thinking as well but it is not what you are saying here:

But the best way might be to have the broadcast version as a version on stories with no surviving episodes, and otherwise, it is implied that the main version is the found episode.

My head goes all spinny with all these different versions and how they should relate to each other, excuse me if I confuse you all

My thinking is that this should solve the issue of having to rate both versions. However, I think that the “Main Story” is a special case and that is the version most people are going to rate. It is a place where you rate the quality of the story. The variants are for users who think it is fun to rate a specific version. If you watch the animated version of PotD, then you can rate both the main story and/or the animation. If you do it on the same day, then that is probably just the version you watched and it is not a repeat. I think that I am thinking the same as you but this is my thinking.

Exactly this. If you log them on separate days, then you have probably read or watched it again, and then it is a repeat.

No excuse needed. It is not an easy concept that we are trying to solve, but I think that we are getting closer to it.

We are crossing wires here because I’m just posting some thoughts but here they are:

What if, only 1 version of the story appears in search and filters, but when you rate it it pops up and says “which version did you complete?” And lists them.

Then you choose the one, and it rates it, and it marks all the others as a new “completed in a different version” - that way only one thing goes in your diary.

You’d be free to give other versions a rating without it thinking you watched it again

Then next time you watch it, you have to press “repeat”, and again it asks which version you watched this time.

The only problem with this I can see is it won’t be super obvious how this works if someone just wants to search for the one they watched.

I could still keep the “other variations of this story” button and still keep separate pages for them all, but removing from search would de-clutter

The DVDs etc would still be in search so you could find it that way.

I think it might be best to describe this over a video chat lol

And on some home media, there are also extended cuts of classic serials too (eg. Trial)… and then there’s unique versions like the courtroom-less version of Terror of the Vervoids.

This sounds pretty logival to me! And not too dififcult to grasp.

I could go even more niche - the DVD version of The Time Meddler is technically missing a few seconds of footage, which has been cleverly recreated and “stitched in” for the Collection blu-ray version… and yet both of those versions are still different because neither are the true originally transmitted versions on the BBC.

I think that might be going a bit overboard. We can’t add different versions endlessly, especially since a lot fo them don’t alter the story massively and most people won’t notice or care about the differences.

I kind of like it and kind of don’t. I think that it might be extra work for the users. That is why I like the main story that will be the thing most people who do a classic marathon or something will do. It is also something that is hard to use for partially found stories. What am I supposed to click if I see the animation for the missing part and the broadcast version for the other parts?

Maybe more like you click on 3.5 stars, then a pop-up could appear that says: do you also want to rate the variant you saw?
