Maybe “if a user was trying to work out whether to watch a story, would they look at the rating for the main story, or for the version they were planning to watch”.
I’ve got some time to myself later (half day, kids out and wife at her friends) so I’ll try and give this some thought from a user/not-very-website-savvy point of view.
Only slightly related but I noticed a typo in ‘audiobook’!
My two pennies on this matter is that I think the site would really be missing something without a ‘main’ page for every story, including the missing episodes. I like how it works now where you can rate a story on its own page regardless of how you’ve experienced it—be that BBC soundtrack, reconstruction or by watching it live in the 60s.
It would be fun if you could rate the specific variation if you like, but I definitely wouldn’t want the main page to go. That’s just my thoughts as a user!
Now you said it, I wonder how many people actually care enough to want to rate the exact version they watched. Of course it’d be an awesome feature for more hard-core fans, but a main page for rating any/all version may be the most used by a casual fan
After @taraoftraken and @AlfieSigma comment and the discusion we had yesterday This is my suggestion.
When you come to a story like Power you land on the Main Story page. This works more or less as it does now. But has tabs for variations as you suggested @shauny Another difference is that the ratings and episodes box has moved in and is in the same part of the page as the overview. Indicating that they are connected to that version.
When you change those parts change along with the images. But the rest of the page such as reviews and characters stay the same. This is something that more advanced users can do if they like to but it is not required. Here you can rate a specific version of the story. Maybe you want to rate all versions of Power because it is fun then you can do that but you are never required to do that and it will not count to you completions % but are logged in your diary as rated Power of the Daleks - Version: Animation.
When you rate the story through UpNext or in a story box, you will always rate the main story because that is the focus; the rest are extra features.
Tabs only show up when it is relevant.
For the final design, it will need to be clearer which parts are in the tab menu and which parts are not. It might also be relevant to add an optional choice for reviews to mark which version they are reviewing, but as everything regarding versions this is optional.
Thoughts?
This seems like a good compromise between all the ideas that have been batted about!
Honestly, that looks and sounds really good to me. But it looks like a nightmare to code so that it goes right
For mobile, I think that tabs are not going to work and that they have to change to a drop-down. I also moved down the menu to be outside the parts that are specific to a version.
I am no programmer and don’t really know. I always leave those things to others. But my guess is that it is not harder than some other things that @shauny has done on the site.
Thanks for looking at this!
My question would be something that I’m still not sure on:
If you visit that page for Power, and switch tab to the Animation, and give it 5 stars, what happens to the “original” story? Does it also get completed and marked as 5 stars?
But then in the stats it would be as if you watched both of them on the same day, so your number of stories and hours spent watching would be all out of whack.
That’s why before I was thinking it would get automatically skipped. But even that has problems.
Maybe there is a hidden thing that isn’t “skipped” but works the same, it’s “completed in a different version” or something.
That’s my main confusion at the moment.
My spontaneous thought is that the main story is not rated then. It gives more power to the user to use this feature in different ways (it is also what happens today if you only rate the animation). But I can be convinced to change that.
My thinking is that the first version you rate is the one that counts at your stats the rest counts as “log an repeat”
I like this.
That’s quite interesting. I guess it could be seen as a repeat. Perhaps repeats are the answer…
I did not think about it that much when I wrote it, but now that you say it, I think that it might be the solution
(I have no idea who that is)
I need to think more on this but I think you’ve solved the problem!!
Forgive me jumping in after several billions of posts, but is there a reason the animations couldn’t be completely separated as their own thing? Tales of the TARDIS ‘episodes’ are treated as a separate entity altogether (Tales of the TARDIS: The Time Meddler isn’t treated as a ‘variation’, for example, and doesn’t appear on the general story page for The Time Meddler). Or am I mis-understanding what’s being discussed here?
I have a little question. Say I rated the animation for a missing 2nd Doctor story first, then also listened to the soundtrack. What happens to my percentage of hours listened, if the latter counts as a repeat?
I also noticed this before. I remember some of them are logged as adaptations to the original stories while some are not… It was a bit of a mess. But that’s months ago since I last checked and submit my suggestions
Oh, my bad, I didn’t see it down the page!
Your rating is also bad. Naughty shauny.
Repeats are gonna count towards hours, just need to finish that!
