Clara’s Diner
Madam Mayor
Shepherd’s Boy
Long Song
Singing Towers
The Doctor’s Theme
Impossible Girl
I am the Doctor
Where there’s tears there’s hope
Another Clara’s diner enjoyer
It’s the best version IMO
I never knew it existed until late last year or early this year. I fell in love with it instantly.
It makes her theme a cannon song as 12 plays it in her TARDIS which is a diner Amy and Rory went to with 11.
Capaldi also played it after they finished shooting since it was Coleman’s last day.
Oh hey Piano is here, welcome, glad to have you finally over here
Very coincidental that I was just listening to Clara?, it’s certainly my favourite of the companion themes and even contends with I am the Doctor and A Good Man?. I think it was a really good move on Moffat and Capaldi’s part to have Clara’s Diner be live performed by Capaldi himself, it adds a lot to the emotional weight of the ending and just adds that extra bit of pizzazz, though I do think Clara’s Diner suits more as scene backing instead of a song I actually listen to on it’s own.
thank youuuu
There are so many to list but a couple of my faves that usually slip under the radar:
I also have to say Clara’s theme is my favourite of the companion themes, though I’m not sure which version I like best. I agree that Clara’s Diner is fantastic within the episode but maybe doesn’t work as well for outside listening. Other than that, my favourite bit of music is Owen’s theme, specifically Owen Fights Death.
Castrovalva has some pretty nice themes in its soundtrack.
I couldn’t name you what the other companions themes were for £1000 I don’t know them.
I mean, that’s kinda The Point of a leitmotif; to represent a character/setting/relationship/theme etc and be played whenever it appears in a story, with variations to convey changes in mood or atmosphere or story arc etc. it’s one of my absolute favourite things about soundtracks.
I think Amy and River both have themes that are up there, especially River’s which is the undercurrent of series 6
Also, to prove that I’m not completely biased towards the Moffat era
(Vale Decem also good)
OMG thank you, I’ve been looking for that word all day
Oh yes! Leitmotifs are the bread and butter of soundtracks. Just look at other great franchises: the Imperial March is forever tied to Darth Vader/Emperor Palpatine; Raiders March to Indiana Jones and so on. I Am the Doctor is Eleven’s theme for when he does heroic, Doctor-y stuff and that’s why it’s so awesome!
It’s genuinely so fun to pick up on and follow leitmotifs when you’re watching something, it really shows how much care the composer put into the soundtrack and makes the whole narrative so much more cohesive and satisfying
My favorite lietmotif is I am the doctor
I’ve been listening to the series 11 soundtrack at work today and its reminded me how good some of the tracks from that series are. “Me and My Mates” and “Rebuilt” from Resolution and “Reverse the Polarity” from It Takes You Away are particular favourites of mine, and I think it is no coincidence that those two episodes are two of my favourites from the Thirteenth Doctor era - the music really enhances the big moments and imagery. I find it really easy to picture the gravity corridor setpiece in Resolution, when I hear the corresponding music, for example.
I’d be interested to hear what others think of Segun Akinola’s music these days - a quick search of this page indicates he’s only been mentioned once before now, which is a shame. His soundtracks are certainly very different from Murray Gold’s, but I think they definitely still have some great tracks!
Oh I love Akinola’s music!
Do you have any particular favourite themes or memorable bits of music from his tenure as composer? I’ll probably listen to series 12 and 13 tomorrow, but I don’t think I’ve listened through the series 13 specials before now
