Sixie and his love of words

Something I enjoyed about the sixth Doctor’s characterisation on screen that sometimes makes a welcome appearance in his audios is this incarnation’s love of words. It always makes me smile when it crops up and it fits Colin so well. Just listening to “The Lure of the Nomad”. Two episodes in and I’m finding it very enjoyable. It is evoking Sixie’s era rather nicely, I find (although with the much more palatable “edges-knocked-off” approach that BF use). However, what REALLY delighted me (as an animal ecologist, it had particular resonance) was this little line from the Doctor (following Matthew’s use of the term “Octopi”):

“Octopodes, Matthew. Greek, not Latin.”

I confess to having said pretty much exactly that at a dinner party where a rather obnoxious guest insisted on “correcting” someone else’s use of the term “Octopusses”. Hearing Colin come out with this… It quite made my day!

This is the reason Colin says he always loved Pip and Jane Baker’s scripts - because they wrote a lot of verbose dialogue for his Doctor.

And it really does work for him. I can see why he’d like Pip and Jane’s verbiage.

Honestly, I really think Colin Baker is the greatest audio Doctor. Even when he has mediocre scripts, he’s just such a joy to listen to. His performances are always so effusive and captivating, and I always have fun. And when he’s got a good script! Pure magic <3

I love how some of his original TV scripts had insults he deemed too “tame”, so he made up his own. Considering how much of a bibliophile and linguaphile Colin is, it would be a slap in the face if his Doctor wasn’t the same haha.

He really seems to appreciate the fact that he gets to show what he was always capable of in the role. Much underrated on screen. I appreciate his era was riddled with issues (though I do still enjoy it) but he always gave his all (and still does) to the role.

I’ll say it loud and clear.

“Colin Baker is a class act!”

I think the best of each Doctor always comes to the surface when an aspect of the actor’s own natural personality comes to the surface. Delighted we can already see that with Ncuti’s portrayal too. Smart writers build this in to their characterisation. Whilst the core of any Doctor’s dialogue will be recognisably “Doctory”, it’s the quirks that make each incarnation really come to life.

Any other instances of Sixie’s love of words in the audios that come to mind?

The entirety of the audio “…Ish” is Big Words Abound, since it takes place at a linguistic conference!

Ooooh! Yes, I remember that one. Many years since I have listened to it. I should do something about that.

“The Carrionite Curse” is another good one with a focus on words.

This exchange from The One Doctor lives in my head:

DOCTOR: I warn you, a verbal duel against me—as you should remember if you use the smallest fraction of your cerebral cortex—can only end in ignominy for you.
ZAME: Igno- what!? Talking to you is like arguing with a thesaurus!
DOCTOR: It pays to enrich your word power.

Ahhh, but I’ve never really discussed audios in a forum before. It’s a revelation to know that audio discussions (and love of said audios) is not only welcomed here, but positively encouraged!

Really good to know that “Doctor Who and the Pirates” is well regarded. Certainly deserves as much.

Jacqueline Rayner is definitely in my top three favorite Sixth Doctor writers. She adds an element of humor and fluff in her works that really appeal to me.
