Season One: 11 May!

Or, assuming that you don’t work Saturday and are asleep at midnight, you could get up Saturday, eat breakfast, and watch Doctor Who. I’m not really sure why morning is an issue. Though, for me, if it’s am, it’s the end of my day, not the beginning.

Of course, I’m in PST, so 7 pm EST is 4 pm, one hour after I log into work. I’ll try to get off work early, but I may very well be sitting there for 7.5 hours before I can watch the new episodes. Releasing at midnight PST would’ve actually been perfect timing for me.

Good thing I didn’t get off the internet to avoid spoilers for Tales of the Tardis, though, since at 4 and a half months, I still wouldn’t be able to get back on… :adipose:

There’s a new Instagram account for Doctor Who on Disney+ (disneydoctorwho). They posted yesterday that a new trailer will air in one week :+1:

A different trailer? Or they are a week behind on posting the trailer?

I would assume a new one from their wording:

For me the issue is not just about avoiding spoilers but that the BBC isn’t a streaming service, it isn’t Disney+ or Netflix. It is still primarily a terrestrial broadcaster which I know may be old fashioned in the digital streaming age but this signifies a big change. A show like Doctor Who is appointment to view TV, how will the ability to watch it from midnight (& some feeling they have to before spoilers drop) impact on that going forward?

I’m sure that previously the show premiered in its usual evening slot on BBC One & was then viewable globably which would obviously be different depending on each countries respective timezones.

Doctor Who is a British show. I don’t mean this in any jingoistic way but the funding of it is different, & probably more complicated than a subscription streaming service model. It is part funded by the Licence Fee which all UK households pay. & yet it feels like US audiences are being given preferential treatment now with Doctor Who being availabe first in a more audience friendly slot than in the UK. I’m not anti Disney but I do wonder if this was part of the deal struck with Disney by BBC/Bad Wolf. & I wonder what the long term effects of this will be, & the perception if this new era by audiences.

I understand what you’re saying but this is not really anything specific to Doctor Who or Disney, it’s the way TV is changing.

It may be appointment TV but the fact is that most people don’t want TV live anymore for any show. So moving it online first is a natural progression.

And even if they went with another streaming partner such as Netflix or Apple, who they did speak to, I suspect it would be the same deal. As far as I know, all streaming platforms release at midnight on the day.

RTD said getting a streaming partner was essential for the future of the show. So like it or not, this is necessary.

I’ve gotta say it really seems crazy that people see this as a result of catering to US audiences when it’s clear that they just wanted it to be a midnight release in the UK. 7 PM Eastern is not even prime time and like half the country is still at work

Could be a lot worst and Doctor Who got cancelled and we do not have any.

I think outside of the us, a lot of people just consider the us one place and don’t really keep the size in mind, anyways.

In the main bulk of the us, ignoring Hawaii and Alaska, California is on one side, with the time zone being PST. The other side is, say, New York, in EST. 7 pm EST is 4 pm PST, so it’s earlier then 7 pm for large sections of the country.

Being in Nevada, I’m next to California, so also PST. Nevada is slightly larger then the entire UK. The biggest states would be Alaska, which is roughly what you get when you slap 7 UKs together, and Texas, which is a bit under 3 UKs.

This is all definitely something to keep in mind for anyone visiting the us. You aren’t going to visit Los Angeles and New York City in one trip. By air, that’d be ~3935 km, more like 4490 km driving, so almost 50 hours of straight driving.

Not saying size means that much other then that it’s inconvenient for a lot of us too. But having an idea of the scale of things is always handy…

It is what it is I guess. Another nail in the coffin for the BBC/Licence Fee.

FYI, “The Five Doctors” premiered in the US before the UK. But, you know, no public internet full of spoilers back then.

I’d seen Space Babies rumoured but I’m very surprised it’s real! There are corners of the Internet currently exploding with rage no doubt!

Maybe the Devil’s Chord is the musical episode?
