Both for me,
When it comes to older stuff i wanna read like VNA, VMAs, BBC 8DA etc i’ll download from the seven seas and read on my iPad as i’m not paying lots of money for old books.
If it’s a newish book and available for a good price i’ll try and get it psychically (such as Scratchman and At At Childhoods End) - also own a load of the old 9/10th Doctor books somewhere!
didn’t know you could get books psychically as well as physically and digitally these days! /j
I like digital the best because I can read things on my Nook, which is nicely small and portable. Besides, this way the font is consistent between all my books, which just makes it easier for my brain to process the text.
That said, I do enjoy reading physical books too – just depends on the book and the day. For example, half the charm of my recent Oz readthrough has been reading my mom’s old copies from the '60s with all the original illustrations!
I will say, even though I read books digitally most often, I do try to snag them physically when I can, for a few different reasons:
- Sometimes Nook-compatible ebooks are only available through unsavory methods but I still want to pay my fair share any time I can afford to
- If I want to revisit a passage or go back and check something, physical books are so much easier to flip through, and flipping through them brings back memories like ctrl+f never could
- Having a whole bookshelf of the stories I love is endlessly satisfying!!
I’ve heard of others who also have this practice of reading ebooks and then buying the physicals afterwards for display purposes – I wonder if it’s popular among the denizens of this forum?
Magic!
I have a dream, I’ve seen the light Don’t put it out, and she’s alright, yeah, she’s my sister
Susan could get it for you that way, I’ll bet
Let me put you in the picture/Let me show you what I mean…
Congrats you’re the first person to spot me using song lyrics to bypass the 12 character limit!
Haha, love the idea, so I had to play along!
Similar to what others have said, I prefer physical, but with my library sometimes digital is the obvious choice due to ease of access. For me, part of the fun of Doctor Who is figuring out how to get stuff (legally) for free or cheap, so I am willing to switch if needed. My comics have been almost entirely checked out from the library digital, but with books it’s been more of an even split between library digital and owned physical.
I used to mostly read things physically, as the internet didn’t exist. I do own a lot of physical books.
I do like reading things physically… but I can carry far more books with me on an e-reader, and I can adjust the size of the text if my eyes aren’t enjoying small print, and there’s a light built in on e-readers, usually.
OTOH, the battery is never dead on a physical book.
Of course, with an ebook, I can just have it the moment I purchase it without going anywhere, so that’s a win…
I pretty much exclusively read books physically, but I often read Doctor Who books digitally because most NSAs are out of print, and even newer Who books are hard to find in bookstores.
Mostly digital, some physical.
Well, yeah, but then you miss out on the joy of the book arriving in the post. It’s speed vs. anticipation.
Or go to a book shop? Then you end up buying twice as many books as planned!
I never go to bookshops anymore. Books have become so expensive, and I can’t afford to spend €100 every time I enter. But I miss the wonderful smell of new books.
I usually get all my books from Amazon. I prefer physical but sometimes it can be a pain to carry the book around everywhere, especially when I’m not taking a bag with me.
The joy of anticipation is something that has been horribly damaged by the digital era. For example with streaming, where nowadays you don’t have to wait for the exact time of a TV show each week and switch the right channel, instead there is just this instant gratification, which imo makes it harder to find appreciation for things in the long term.
I love to read physical books and listen to physical CDs for Doctor Who, because it just makes my experiences feel more real and worth waiting for.
Yep, but now I always try to have a bag with me. Just a little tote for emergencies. I have too many totes lol
