Planned updates for Reviews

How on earth could you have time to review with the hours you pour into this site?

I’m very excited about these updates. This site is really shaping into something beyond any expectations I could have ever had. Thank you!

Same. I was just looking for a database where I could mark what I’d consumed. The changes since I joined in November are excellent.

It’s better than the spreadsheet I started.

Yeah, I wanted to keep track of what I hadn’t watched yet… and this is definitely better than my spreadsheet, too.

I’d prefer not. I don’t think it adds anything, it just makes the reviewer seem angry and petty. And I would like to make it a family friendly site. Hence I wondered what to do about some of the sweary reviews and I just added a filter for the worst words.

I love a good swear in real life but I do think it shows a lack of skill in writing a review if you have to resort to profanity to get your point across. It also makes you look angry and Doctor Who should never make anyone actually angry - it’s just a TV show after all.

I like at least two songs I can think of that have swears in the title… but almost never swear.

Part of that, though, is that if I don’t normally swear, it makes it a lot more impactful if I actually do swear (assuming people that have been around me for reasonable levels of time, anyways).

Swearing in a review is generally not a good idea, though…

Looking forward to filling the website for the stories I’ve done so far when I have the time :smiling_imp: Thanks for the hard work so far, Shauny!

Please let me know if I’m responsible for any sweary reviews, happy to censor them myself. Mine stretch back a long way and I’ve only skim read them while adding.*

Edit - I did a quick search and I reckon the spiciest I’ve gotten is the word “fanw**k” in The Poison Sky which has now been removed.

Hilariously, considering these were written for an audience of one (me) I also have some starred out words here and there which have been removed, because they don’t add anything and are a bit lame. :joy:

You’ll make me feel a lot better once you’ve added yours. I’ve added half / two thirds of my reviews and it feels like a lot…! :face_with_peeking_eye:

I’ve only reviewed one thing so far. I only know how to review books, I’ve no idea where to even start when reviewing an episode! Still, I’m happy for this update the few times I do have something to say.

(And if anyone has any tips on writing good reviews, please do share them with me.)

How long should a review be to classify as good? I have a document full of First Doctor reviews from my recent First Doctor watch through but they are mostly one paragraph with only a surface level analysis of my likes and dislikes of the stories. Would those be worth putting on the site?

I’d go ahead. You can always edit them later.

As long as we can write "Lucie Bleedin’ Miller then I’m good

That’s all I really do. As long as your opinion is expressed, then it should be good. Well, that’s my rule for writing them, anyway.

I think that short reviews are fantastic and can fill one type of need. I like this kind especially before I consume something. Longer more in-depth reviews are perfect after I see something and want to know what other people think.

There’s a place for short and long reviews so just post whatever you have. People will read what appeals to them. I have mainly long ones, but a few short ones too for things I didn’t have the time or inclination to sit down to write a longer piece on.

Agreed.

Separately, on rateyourmusic.com they have both reviews and comments on each album page. The reviews are more formal, generally long form. Then the comments are for more informal discourse, generally very short form. Both cater for different needs.

I think if you want to comment on a story, you should make a thread here because then people can easily respond etc. - I don’t want to recreate a forum on the main site.

The Reviews Page is now paginated :white_check_mark:

Is this linked anywhere from the main home page? I can’t see it, if it is
