Wait, what is this?

Oh no! You’ve angered the Delta (not quite yet) of Peladon! You will now feel the wrath of Aggdeltador!

(But that’s why we Scandinavians are victorious  We are very committed to the projects we undertake)

Danish is such a weird language…

I know you’re joking, but it’s actually true!

It sounds like someone put a hot potato in their mouth and tried to speak at the same time - weird but charming!

Why thank you Herra Kylmä Virta :denmark:
Finnish is also such an easy language to wrap your head around :eyes:

And now @Tian enters to say this:

“Fortunately, Sweden sits right between Finland and Denmark and Swedish is a perfect compromise because it’s a wonderful and easy language that we can all speak together”.

That’s big brother Sweden for you!

Toby Hadoke commentary for Episode 3 - lots of comments on how good Lennie Mayne’s direction is. But not saying a huge amount more except dancing around the fact that the actor playing the Guard Captain was apparently big in musical theatre and camp as Christmas (something which was also alluded to in the Ysanne Churchman commentary from Whotalk).

More audiobook this evening and I was reminded that the book gives Peladon’s mother a name - Allua (not sure of the spelling). It’s a tiny detail but a nice touch. I’m also not sure about the emphasis put on Peladon thinking about how much Jo reminds him of his mother, particularly when thinking about marrying her!

The audiobook finally came into its own over the last couple of nights listens. The lead up to the fight between the Doctor and Grun is given a number of scenes rather than just jumping straight to it (as in the TV story).

  • First, Jo and Grun have a scene together when Jo sees the armour that Grun will wear for the fight.
  • Then the Doctor and Ssorg have a scene where Ssorg worries about the Doctor’s chances.
  • And then, most intriguingly, is a scene where King Peladon goes to the temple of Aggedor and promises Aggedor’s spirit (which he confesses to not really believing in) that if the Doctor dies, he will remove all images of Aggedor from the palace, renouncing all worship of him; whereas if the Doctor lives - even at the cost of Grun’s life - he will celebrate and worship Aggedor. All this is overheard by Hepesh. It really adds another dimension to the cliffhanger of the episode where the traitors are revealed - almost as if Peladon’s declaration, forces their hand.

Three chapters of the audiobook left.

Also started listening to Whotalk’s commentary for Episode 3 where Katy Manning and Nick Hobbs are joined by Sylvia James, the make-up artist on this story. Thank the Lord she is there because she immediately puts paid to Toby Hadoke’s constant observation that the nobles of Peladon have a pink stripe in their hair - when it is clearly ginger. James corrects him when he mentions it, pointing out that it is auburn. It’s really been bugging me that it isn’t pink (although I think he mentions in his podcast too so he clearly has forgotten what she said).

The Curse of Peladon Episode 4 (in its many forms) is go!

Finished Episode 4 via the narrated soundtrack and then listened to the interview with Katy Manning afterwards. I don’t know about anyone else, but I really don’t like Mark Ayres as an interviewer. He talks more than the interviewee and tends to just tell them the things they should be saying or thinking.

(I once voiced this opinion on Gallifrey Base and he’s a member there so replied to me! :expressionless:)

Oh and did you know that Katy’s long eyelashes got knitted together during the cliff-climbing scene. I certainly didn’t until she recounted it in the DVD commentary, the Whotalk commentary and in this interview… )

(I know the cast and crew are only going to have so many stories to tell but it’s amusing doing this deep dive and getting the same recollections).

The Whotalk commentary for part 4 next which, intriguingly, has Wendy Danvers on it - she’s the real Earth delegate and is in it for all of 2 minutes. I’m interested to see what Toby Hadoke manages to get from her.

Don’t leave us hanging! What did he say? Was he sad? Furious? Confused? Offended? Amused?

Non-committal - he wasn’t obviously cross but definitely a bit sarcastic.

Nearly finished the Audiobook of Peladon. One episode of Whotalk and then I’m off to be a Prisoner of Peladon.

(I might do the last two DVD episode commentaries at some point but I think I’ve heard all of Katy Manning’s stories now!)

Audiobook done and it was quite enjoyable. As I say upthread, I kind of dismiss the novelisations nowadays, despite them being my meat and drink in my burgeoning fandom when every single story being available at the touch of a button was a sci-fi marvel worthy of the show itself. The ending is a bit different and even skips the kiss between Jo and Peladon.

Whotalk Episode 4 was good value and contained a really interesting conversation about how Katy doesn’t think fans should expect the sons of Doctors to want to play them on audio (Sean Pertwee and the two Troughton boys) and how she thinks Frazer Hines is more than good enough. Bit ironic really.

Oh and Wendy Danvers hated the hat they made her wear as Amazonia.

I also noticed how the Whotalk commentary was clearly recorded not long after Ysanne Churchman returned to the show in Empress of Mars whereas the DVD commentary was seemingly recorded not long after David Troughton had returned in Midnight.

Currently listening to Episode 3’s DVD commentary and Letts and Dicks have been less than complimentary about 80s Who… (Ken Dodd got mentioned…)

I’ve also realised that I always thought the spinning mirror was on top of the Doctor’s sonic but it isn’t! It’s a completely new gadget the Doctor makes in Episode 3!

One other novelisation difference is the fact that Hayles slaughters Peladon’s loyal guard when Hepesh’s temple guards attack the throne room at the climax. It’s actually rather gratuituous.

Read the DWM Fact of Ficton about The Curse of Peladon.

And with that I’m finished with The Curse of Peladon!

To mark the occasion, here’s a picture of Alpha Centauri naked!
