Yeah that is a bit annoying lol, not much I can do about that though.
I think that’s because sometimes, if an audio is, say, 62 minutes and 43 seconds, someone might have put it in as 62 minutes when the correct time (rounded up) would be 63 minutes. It’s so that the stats are as correct as possible.
This might also depend on whether or not we count the credits as part of the runtime. They usually take about 40 seconds, so might change the total runtime with about a minute.
And that is how the runtime edit wars began.
Similar with TV episodes. Lux is 43:56 minutes long. But the Guide says 45 minutes. There’s gunna be some rounding ups and downs.
Shall we add a little specification on the suggestions form to say that interviews & credits don’t count, and to round up if above 30s
Btw, does the Big Finish Ident count?
To be fair I put 45 mins as default for all of them when I created them as I didn’t know the exact numbers, they do need to be fixed.
Yes actually I’ll do that.
Yes because otherwise you’ll have to work out how long that is and subtract it.
What I usually do is after I finish listening to a story, as soon as the music starts, I pause it and look at the runtime and write that down.
But are we including the ending music?
I’m including the ending music. I mean, the opening music and music between episodes in a serial all count, right?
I also have been counting credits before someone mentioned it on the forum
OK before I put in the notice, should we include the music at the end or not?
(I haven’t been. But it’s not a huge deal if things are potentially 1 min off I guess)
- Include ending music in runtime
- Do not include ending music in runtime
These days you can skip the ident in the app and it tells you it’s like 7 seconds long or something
1 min off could start an edit war! /hj
And 60 audios with 1 extra minute could make up a whole episode you know
Well, I’ve added the message.
But my experience with things like this is that people don’t read this little messages
I always download the audios to my device and listen with a different audio player. You can download them as MP3s where each track is separated, and that makes it easy to count how long each audio is without the ident and credits.
Also, have we been counting credits for the TV episodes as well? Because if we have, we should do it for audio as well. I’ve been counting everything except for the interviews.
I think people who break the rules should be given three warnings and then kicked out from suggesting edits /j
I think most tv episodes only have a default runtime
So, with Lux, are you counting the post credit scene as part of the runtime?
In the Big Finish app it separates the ident just like it does the interviews, so I think it shouldn’t (at least in newer releases).
(btw the runtimes in this menu in the app aren’t always rounded up properly so don’t just go looking here for them if you also obsessively care about something so small)
And the ident can be followed by a content warning, which would then also have to be included in the runtime, which would mean that the added ident runtime isn’t a consistent addition.
Hmm, would we include the Whoniverse opening thingy that’s in the UK broadcast of episodes, or the Disney Plus and BBC logo animations that are in the D+ versions of the episodes? Or would we want to turn those into variations?/j
I imagine so. It’s not the first episode to have a mid-credits scene.
And you have things like Demons of the Punjab, with different music on the credits…
For the TV show, there are official runtimes published, so I think we should just use those.
Just browsing the tropes, and finding it amusing that The Shakespeare Code doesn’t fall under ‘Shakespearian Influence’.
