Moffat in 1995 - If they reboot the show, get rid of the Time Lords

Isn’t it more because Doctor Who isn’t Gallifreyan.

… I honest to God forgot about that completely. But yeah, that’s probably the explanation.

In my world of dreams and happy imaginings, the best way to do this (and, yes, I know it’ll probably never happen) would be via a nice juicy high budget glossy Sci Fi stylings televised spin-off. I mean, there’s so much potential that’s already been explored via the audio series yet… there’s so soooo much more!

Like I say, never gonna happen… but I can dream!

Interesting reading Moffat say even back then: “Yeah they should get rid of Timelords”, I will say I disagree and actually I’d argue in many ways, while I like what they were going with the Time War (especially S1), I was never really that fond of the Idea to get rid of them and I am especially not fond of it now.

An intriguing Point to bring up is that Moffat mentions that he can’t believe Doctor Who comes from those People and well.. uhh that’s the Point, isn’t it? Dr. Who and many of the other Renegades are Outsiders for that Reason, having their Origin be well this Planet that we have seen as a corrupt, shady and at times boring World is perfect in my Eyes. I love how The War Games makes the Timelords feel so god-like, and for a long time I really disliked what they did afterward with them. But the more I think about it, the more I end up liking it for various Reasons. I mean, a Spin-Off like Gallifrey just shows off what this Planet and its People have to offer in terms of Lore and more.

It’s a great shame that the Revival seems to be very disinterested to a.) Decide rather or not Gallifrey is gone for good, b.) To make something out of it. I mean there are so many Routes you can go, if you think the Classic Show did it too boring, why not take Inspirations from the EU and do something unique (for the TV Show) with them?

I am not even somebody who doesn’t like the Chibnall Era, but this is still that one Decision of his that baffles me deeply :frowning: (and I am really just tired of ‘Last of the Timelords’-Shtick that we have in RTD2)

I think a big part of this is the anxiety that many fans of classic DW developed regarding the show. It was widely slated (and not entirely fairly) throughout the mid to late 80s (yes, despite a triumphant renaissance in form under Cartmell/McCoy). One crtiticism that was, however, justified was the well documented increasing importance of ‘fan continuity’ that proliferated during the JNT years. This, in turn, crystallised a core ‘fan’ audience that was very niche and oft inclined to turn on the show as well, whilst alienating the wider audience.

It’s hardly surprising that RTD, Moffat and Chibnall have all been resistant to reinstating the elements (of which Gallifrey was a big part) that were linked to that period in the show’s history (and tainted public perception throughout the 1990s). Indeed, Moffat went furthest but the longer his showrunning lasted, the more criticisms started to spring up; overly complex, increasingly self-referential and steeped in continuity that didn’t always add up. Whilst some these criticisms were not entirely fair, there was still a sense that DW was losing its wider audience. Is it any wonder that Chibnall, already facing scrutiny from certain subsections of the audience for daring to cast (can you believe it?) a… a… WOMAN in the role , also chose to revert to a back to basics approach with his first season and later dispatched Gallifrey once again? We might not agree on this, but I can definitely see a reason behind it that makes sense (even if ultimately flawed).

Fan anxiety has a lot to answer for, because of the events of the mid to late 80s, the sense of being bereft during the wilderness years and the false dawn of the TVM (which, again, leaned into fannish continuity and lore). It’s a real thing and I get the sense that all three modern showrunners carry it deeply.

On the one hand if they used Gallifrey audio stuff for TV I fear it would ruin it because I do not trust the TV show with my beloved Gallifrey. On the other hand Romana :star_struck:
