Still against the get rid of Time Lords. They was poorly written in the show for sure but look at what big finish has done with them. Wouldn’t it be nice if we got Gallifrey Spinoff with the time war on TV.

Great Idea tbh.

There’s a lot of ideas Moffat, RTD, Gatiss and co. were saying prior to the Revived Series, a lot of which they changed their minds on, or altered as a result of the newer format. The origin of the word “Doctor” was mentioned over a decade before A Good Man Goes to War as people like to mention. An interesting article in DWM about it: https://imgur.com/a/d9mPS

Moffat also predicted a fair amount of the revived show in Curse of Fatal Death…

Including a female 13th Doctor

“Being dead boring in stupid hats” literally sounds like something the Second Doctor would say.

Uncle Steve was right btw.

It was a great idea!

And we explored the Doctor being the Last Of The Time Lords™ for years, with the Doctor being very mopey about this for many years.

Then finally the War Doctor met 10 and 11, and together they changed history and restored Gallifrey for an amazing celebration of the 50th anniversary, which opened up so many new story possibilities, including Heaven Sent which is widely regarded as one of the best stories, plus a really great look into how the Time Lords are living at the end of reality in Hell Bent.

I thought perhaps they’d be a looming force / threat for years to come, and eventually maybe be restored in full and we’d have loads of more interesting things to say about them… but then Chibnall decided to destroy Gallifrey again, in what I think was a really unwise attempt to add ‘mopeyness / depth’ to the Thirteenth Doctor, and here we are.

Back to The Last Of The Time Lords™

Thanks, I hate it!

That’s New Who’s issue right there - it can’t decide how to do something interesting with Gllaifrey so it just shunts it out of the picture even if there is loaaadsss you could do with Time Lords and their ‘empire’ of time (which may or may not exist anymore)

Maybe it’s now the empire of Tim…

Gallifrey is the most boring place in the universe. Even more boring that Milton Keynes!

And not only that but also explicitly acts as if renegades off world don’t exist or somehow also died despite the fact that they’re such a fun character idea. It makes the universe smaller when it’s only The Doctor and sometimes The Master

For sureee that’s something I’ve never got - of course the TV is under no obligation to follow BF canon but the Gallifrey audios are so clear about there being off world missions and a resistance and so on. There’s no way every single Time Lord was on Gallifrey at its destruction

This is something I’ve thought about every time the doctor said he was the last of the time lords. There are definitely more renegades than just him and the master lol

They referenced this in The Devil’s Chord, the Doctor does not know if all the Time Lords who were elsewhere were killed (he was talking about Susan here):

DOCTOR: The Time Lords were murdered. The genocide rolled across Time and Space, like a great big cellular explosion. Maybe it killed her too.

I really really hope that’s not supposed to be true. I also really want Susan to return!!

(Also, does this hint at how The Master wiped them out? Some kind of DNA bomb?)

Love that it took RTD 20 years to finally address that one :smiling_face_with_tear:

If the Doctor wasn’t affected by whatever kind of weapon can take out all Time Lords across time and space, is this New Who finally acknowledging that he is half-human?

Interesting how Moffat was kind of right. Yes, it would be cumbersome to have all the Time Lord explanation for the new rebooted show. It would either rely too much on the audience having knowledge of the classic show’s lore, or they’d be forced the explain it all over again. What RTD ended up doing was a great balance, I think, that with the show being a revival, not a reboot, but the Time War giving them a more or less blank slate.

But really, getting rid of Gallifrey because the Time Lord society is boring is not that good a reason. They can easily be made more interesting, as a lot of EU stuff proves.

If it was the Master, probably it’s more the case of him deliberately excluding the Doctor from the bomb’s effects somehow…
